Help with skin issue, please

Posted: Jul 26, 2011

I've never had this before, but on my forehead and spreading to a small part of my cheek, near my mouth and on one side of my nose I've developed seborrheic keratosis.  My PCP told me to use a very mild cleanser and hydrocortisone cream x3 daily, but it really doesn't seem to be helping much.  The spots get warm to the touch and itchy and are really getting more and more difficult to cover when I have to go out.

Has anyone else had this and found something a bit more helpful than just a gentle cleanser and hydrocortisone cream?  If so, please share...It's beginning to look like I've got a particularly nasty and large case of the measles!

Thanks in advance!!!

hydrocortisone OTC not the best... - HospitalBrat

I'd just go back or ask for a derm referral. Hydrocortisone cream doesn't always do the job for me, and some OTC creams can do more harm than good if they are overused. You may need a stronger topical steroid, and those are usually prescriptions.

In warm weather, I get eczematous rashes on my legs and arms. After showers, I sometimes use heat rash powder after putting on lotion. Since this is on your face, though, I wouldn't recommend that. If you want to try something different in the meanwhile, take some oatmeal and blend the snot out of it (food processor, blender, or coffee grinder), mix it in with a little warm milk, and try some of that on there. Might help with some of the itch.

SOUNDS LIKE DISCOID LUPUS...which requires a punch biopsy to prove. - bamagirl

I had the same thing as you describe and it kept getting worse...so went to my dermatologist who did the above biopsy and now welcome to the world of Plaquenil....forever.

rash - old hand

Odds are it is not something scary like discoid lupus -- hopefully you won't let some non-doctor on line alarm you like that -- especially since your PCP was not that concerned. Of course if it is not healing, you should definitely go back to see your doctor

Once upon a time, I had a problem with a patch of eczema on my forehead, it was ugly and painful and it took a long time to clear up. One thing that did help along with following my PCP's advice and using the meds prescribed, was following my mother's advice -- pay more attention to diet along with taking a high quality multivitamin every day.

No, I google imaged DL and my rash looks nothing like that - More like an eczema type of thing

I think I'm going to give the multivitamins and Listerine-soaked cotton balls a try...Sometimes those old remedies work when modern day technology fails, so it's worth a shot.

Thanks much to all who posted!

I know it sounds odd but I had something similar - mrsp

I soaked a cotton ball in Listerine and saturated it three times a day and started a multivitamin and it cleared up completely after about 3 days. Not sure if it was the Listerine or the vitamin or both but I found that the topicals (Neosporin, bacitracin, or hydrocortisones) didn't work for me either. The listerine is antiseptic as well as drying. I remember my grandma telling me once that to beat a rash you have to dry it, not keep it moist. So I gave it a shot and it worked. It's worth a shot. :) Good luck.

I think i had something like that. i thought for the longest time that it was my acne that never seemed to go away...but I live in a dry climate so i thought it was aggravating it...then i thought it was rosacea because it was warm to touch and sometimes my whole face would go red, esp the evenings.
i went to clinique (i kno it can be pricey sometimes) and i got an antioxidant night cream. you hard use any of it at night. And i use aveeno face sun screen, which is non-greasy and doesnt clog pores. i found that it helped tremendously after years.
but i would recommend not using "oily" products cuz that will clog, wash makeup brushes in your face cleanser, and make sure your skin isnt get dried out cuz by washing it too much you in essence keep the cycle going....

all the best tho :)

Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...

Skin Tag AdviceMar 24, 2015
Have a skin tag located on my neck.  It was red and inflammed looking for the last couple of weeks.  This a.m. it has turned white and is just hanging on by a thin thread.  Collar of my shirt(s) keep rubbing against it.  Friend told me to pull it off.  I don't think I can do that.  Put a band-aid over it.  Hesitant to pull it off as I am a diabetic.   Don't have an extra money to go to a doctor.  Anybody else have tihs experi ...

Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...

Question About Rx Skin ProductNov 30, 2011
I was complaining to my doc about fine lines, crow's feet/smiles lines, and the beginnings of those "marionette" lines (nasolabial fold area) and was inquiring about botox or a filler.  He told me I wasn't ready for that yet and instead prescribed Retin A gel.  He said faithful use of this, starting judiciously and then increasing, would provide visible reduction in about 8-12 weeks.  I've heard that Retin A (even the microgel) can be really harsh on the skin ...

Hypothyroidism And Skin IssuesApr 09, 2011
I have hypothyroidism, but not taking any medications.  Part of my problem is my face and skin.  Under my eyes is always flaky (like psoriasis) and I've got pimples that are breaking out all over my face, but they are not like the pimples of my youth (without getting gross about how I used to get rid of them), now when I try to pop them nothing happens and they get bigger and redder and they hurt.  The skin on my face is normal but my forehead is normal to oily and the areas ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

What Skin Products Do You Ladies Use?Feb 04, 2013
I have older (40) skin that is acne prone. I'm looking for a skin product that doesn't over dry as acne products can sometimes do because my skin is older and now wrinkle prone too. I use neutrogena moisturizer, aveeno dry skin oatmeal bar, and retin A. I only wear foundation maybe once or twice a week (neutrogena). I know it's the products that are causing me to break out because I used to use Rhonda Allison and didn't break out, my skin looked great, however, Rhonda All ...

The Skin Rash That Refuses To DieApr 16, 2016
Anyone got good skin rash remedies?  I've had a rash on my left forearm for several YEARS.... it waxes and wanes, but is always dry and plaque-like.  Very similar to psoriasis, but my arthritis is osteo, not inflammatory, so I'm pretty sure it's just some form of eczema.  It's sometimes dry and scaly, sometimes weepy (especially when I scratch too much) and has become scarred as a result. I've tried everything:  Cortisone creams, dry skin creams, ant ...

Its about how vets are dying literally because of the wait. this is NOTHING new and goes back to the Vietnam war, but one good reason I oppose war in general is our RECORD of not taking care of the soldiers who are signed up at too young of an age to know what they are getting into - and often WHY. We should all be outraged over this and express our outrage to our congressmen and women - and ALL administrations who don't make this a priority. ...

I have a bra question. I've recently learned that I have been wearing the wrong size bra for years (who hasn't unfortunately). I was sized at Victoria Secret and am a size 34DDD. I've always worn bigger size bras to fit the cups and had spillage and still had a gap in the band part, no matter the size or style, and now I know why they never fit properly. Well, VS has my size 34DDD (of course) in many styles but they are at least $50 for one bra and way out of my price range, n ...

A Few Observations About The Tax Issue.Oct 03, 2016
The first thing to note is that any business, and especially those that do business in multiple states and even in other countries, operates in landscape of tax obligations, of which the federal income tax is only one element and might even be much less significant than others. Second, "tax" refers to every and any monetary obligation that any and all taxing authorities levy on a business and sometimes certain particular operations that it conducts.  For instance, fees for building permits ...

Should I Mention About A Possible Medical Issue Or NotDec 27, 2009
Some time back I mentioned to my DIL that her father should get his heart checked out. I noticed he had creases in his earlobes. The reason I mentioned is was for the fact I had a cardiologist who says this over and over in dictations, then when studying further found it could mean heart problems. Well, you would have thought I had tried to kill someone, everyone sprang into action stating there was nothing wrong with him at all. Fast forward a few years, DIL's father just recovering from q ...
