emergency room visit cost/no insurance question

This morning I had to go to the emergency room for a dental infection. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago and they gave me antibioitcs. Stopped the antibiotics a couple weeks ago. They said the infection might come back until I get the tooth pulled. They said if it swells get to the ER and fast. Well I woke up this morning and it was swollen and painful so I went. I have no health insurance and am broke. Does anyone know how much this will cost (roughly) and is there any help for whatever it costs?

I would think they would have the most accurate information for you as opposed to what you may learn here. Good luck to you!

It is going to have to be pulled anyway or have a root canal. Did you not have it pulled because you did not have the money? Having it pulled would be the cheaper option, I think anyway.

Found a place that will do extractions for cheaper. Don't know exactly how much, but definitely is cheaper than root canal.

I have an indemnity insurance plan through my employer, but it does not meet the ACA. It's a horrible plan. My total bill for the ER was $1195. My plan paid $30.

I was in the hospital for a week, and the bill was $84,000. The plan paid $2000 of it. Fortunately, I received 100% charity care, and I did not have to pay the remaining $82,000.

However, charity care did not cover the physicians' fees or the ER bill. I started off with 13 bills totaling about $8000. I contacted every single provider and told them all I could pay was $5 per month. One or two actually zeroed my balance immediately. Others gave me a discount. Now 4 years later, I am down to 3 bills, one of which is the ER bill. I felt like I was nearing the end of this black tunnel, when I had to make a trip to the ER a few weeks ago. I have not yet received the bill, but I'll have to add it to the other bills I'm still trying to pay off.

Just want you to know you are not alone in this nightmare of trying to make health care decisions when you don't have money or insurance. Like me, you probably at one time were making a decent living and had adequate insurance. I wonder if things will ever turn around in this country.

Praying that you recover from this infected tooth and that you are able to pay the bills. It never hurts to try to negotiate a lower bill or seek charity care based on financial hardship.

The Emergency Room has to accept you whether you have insurance or not (EMTALA Law). You will just have to call business office and set up payments. People do it everyday.

Well, I'm not a member of many message boards, but am a transcriptionist and post on the MT site some. This has to do with the Obama health law. Well yesterday I ended back up in the ER. My entire spine is numb. They did MRis and I went to see the neurosurgeon. This summer I am hopefully going to have some little girls come and visit, sisters, one 9 and one 11. I hope they will be visiting for about 20+ days.
