I have a Thanksgiving emergency! My electic oven, which is ancient will not heat up past 250 degree

Posted: Nov 21, 2011

And I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people.  I purchased a 21-pound Turkey and a ham and I am freaking out!  I have figured out that I can cook the ham in my big crock pot.  The turkey, however, I'm not sure about.  I am wondering about one of those electric turkey roasters, like an Oster or Hamilton Beach at Wal-Mart, but can one of those handle a 20 pound turkey?  I've never used one before, but I've heard the turkey comes out pretty moist with them, but I've never seen a turkey come out of one good and brown which is something I love in a turkey.

Besides the turkey, I have a broccoli rice casserole and sweet potato souffle that I was going to fix which requires an oven.  Everyone else has already planned what they are bringing and so I hate to change things at the last minute.

I bought another oven, but cannot have it installed without hiring an electrician because I live in a very old house and my old oven isn't plugged into an adapted 210 outlet, it is actually wired into the wall.  I've called around for an electrician, but no one wants to get to me until the week AFTER Thanksgiving.  I live in a rural area, so my options are limited.

Any suggestions?

The skin will not be as crisp as when done in the oven, but it will be brown. And it will be very, very moist. I bought one to use last Thanksgiving and love being able to have my bird in one portable oven (doesn't even have to cook in the kitchen) and other things in the oven. The type I have also came with 3 tubs to use it as a warming/serving table for side dishes. If you could cook your side items the day before, you could take out your turkey and put the sides into the warmers for serving, especially since it would still be warm. Just lift out the removeable liner to pour out the turkey drippings, give it a quick hose down in the sink, drop it back into the roaster and drop the warming tubs into place.

Convection oven? Turkey Fryer? - oaf

Just a few ideas. People swear by those turkey fryers - for one holiday it might be interesting.

My mom and stepdad have a turkey fryer, but he tells me - Gobble Gobble!

you shouldn't put a turkey bigger than 15 pounds in one. So he doesn't even want to try it for fear he'll burn is barn down. LOL

I knew I should have gotten two smaller turkeys versus one big one. I even debated about in the grocery store! Oh well, live and learn.
you can butterfly it open too - try foodnetwork.com

so it lays flat while cooking so it cooks more evenly and quicker.

convection oven? - a wanna be cook

so easy, i smoke the turkey on my smoker outside (a smoker is basically a covered grill with wet oak added after the fire is hot), cook the ham inside in the crock pot and have my oven free for the other goodies!!!

You can cook a turkey in a 250 degree oven....sm - oldtimer

It will just take longer. Another option would be to ask a neighbor or one of your guests if you can use their oven.

Warm Climate? - JC

If you're in a fairly warm climate, you can use the grill if you have one. You can do it in one of those throw-away roasting pans or a spit. I would not put the bird directly on the grates.

I'm not cooking savvy (hubby does all this stuff), but you could check the Internet for grilling instructions.

I am making a brocolli-rice casserole for T'giving, amoung other things, and this would free up my oven a bit. How did you cook it and how did it turn out? Do you serve it from the crockpot or transfer it to a dish?

Inquiring minds want to know..........

Sorry, just saw this. Put instant rice, water, soup, cheez whiz - chopped onion, broccoli in crockpot

[ In Reply To ..]
Cook on high for 3 hours, low 7 hours. I serve out of the crockpot, why dirty yet another dish? I have been making this for years. Have never made it any other way, so guess you could say it turns out..... GREAT.
Thanks for sharing....sm - Old Woman

I did mine the traditional way this time, but will definitely try yours at another time. This is one of my favorite veggie (if it even qualifies as a vegetable after adding so many fat and starch-laden ingredients) casseroles and to make it without as much effort sounds very appealing to me.
Hope your T'giving was blessed!
Ingredient quantities please?? (nm) - crocker

Does your oven have a removable knob for regulating the heat. If so pull it off and there are sometimes screws on the back of it for calibrating your temperature.

Do it on the stove top - dm

[ In Reply To ..]
Large metal turkey roaster with lid set on two burners on top of the stove. Adjust burners to very low flames and let heat to get and maintain the "oven" temperature you want (use a thermometer to check). Of just use the stove top to get the thing browned and then roast long and slow in the 250 oven as someone else suggested.

Know anyone who has an electric roaster? sm - Old Woman

If not, Walmart has them on sale this week, I believe. Just make sure you can fit that humongous turkey bird in it.

Anyone Watch Ancient Aliens???May 05, 2012
I started watching this about a year ago.  Even though I don't buy their theories about ETs causing a lot of our history -- that they created man and caused the extermination of the dinosaurs -- not a meteor as scientists have said for years and years.  I must admit it is fascinating and they never cease to amaze me.  Now ET's are time travelers and have come from our future to make changes on our planet.  They say ET's were the ones who destroyed all mankind i ...

I Firmly Believe In God, But Find Shows Such As Ancient Aliens Very Upsetting. Feb 22, 2012
It is very disheartening and upsetting that these shows are trying to disrupt the Christian world and poison us with their crazy theories about how life took shape on our planet.   I must admit I was fascinated with their show, but realized it is an Atheist's attempt to make Christianity seem like a fantasy and that God really does not exist.  These people are very clever and master manipulators of the truth.  They are very convincing and I find it very sad to think they prob ...

Self-cleaning OvenNov 29, 2010
Well, made a huge Thanksgiving dinner (and I  have to admit the oven hadn't been cleaned in a few weeks before that) and cleaned the oven today.  Didn't realize how bad it was until the smoke started filling the kitchen and living room.  I am surprised smoke detectors didn't go off before I got windows open. I think I should still be using Easy-Off.  At least then I did it on a more regular basis.  The smoke has quit, but whole house still smells smokey. ...

Anyone With A Microwave/convection OvenAug 11, 2012
Our over the stove/under the cabinet microwave took a dump this week and we got a new one yesterday, but it is a microwave/convection oven.  (Got a really good deal $389.00)  When using the convection oven part, I assume you can not use a plastic container to cook in and I also assume you can not use a metal pan, so what do you cook in?  I assume that glass/corning ware is okay, but not sure other than that.  TIA. ...

Toaster Oven QuestionsJan 01, 2016
Does anyone own a toaster oven.  Our oven broke and is cheaper to buy a toaster oven than fix ours.  The only thing we really cook in the oven is small stuff (roast a chicken, cookies, brownies, melt cheese on our sandwiches and things like that).  No huge turkeys or whatever. So I'm looking at toaster ovens, at least a 6 slice toaster.  Does anyone have any recommendations or ones to stay away from.  We went to target and some were flimsy.  We are looking at ...

Anybody Else Here NOT Running The Heat?Dec 06, 2011
Last year I discovered that I could save a lot on my winter electric biill by not running the central heat.  (I live in southern Arizona, and our winters are very miild.) I sleep in a fleece Sofa Sack and fleece socks.  Most nights a lightweight fleece blanket on the bed is just fine, but last night was supercold and tonight will be as well.  A bulky quilt or comforter is not what I'm into (there are space considerations too).  I am looking at either a portable spa ...

Georgia--No ACA, No Emergency Room CareMar 01, 2014
Talk about getting what you vote for. Move out of Georgia if you can. . . **** Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) has a problem: rural hospitals keep closing, overwhelmed by financial troubles they can’t solve on their own. The obvious solution – accepting Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act – is the one thing Deal refuses to even consider. There is no great mystery here as to why the rural hospitals can’t keep their doors open. These facilities have routinely covered low- ...

tenfold over last year. Nationally, hospital beds in some areas filling up. Methinks it's time to stop procrastinating and go get that shot. If I still can. This was on the evening news. I'm hoping the illness that hit most people at our Thanksgiving dinner was this flu. ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
