Boston declares public health emergency, flu cases up

Posted: Jan 9, 2013

tenfold over last year. Nationally, hospital beds in some areas filling up. Methinks it's time to stop procrastinating and go get that shot. If I still can. This was on the evening news.

I'm hoping the illness that hit most people at our Thanksgiving dinner was this flu. It was certainly an enthusiastic spreader, but the seminal sympton was an unusual weakness that everyone commented on; fever yes and going to the lungs, but no one had significant tummy problems.

Oh, well. Sounds like this is going to hit a lot of us. Try to stay well.

My hospitals filled up on Monday - Happy MT Robin

I work in-house for a statewide healthcare system and there are 3 hospitals in this metro area. They had to close all 3 hospitals to outside transfers on Monday. There were 14 patients waiting for beds at the main hospital and 3 and the other hospital on this end of town and 2 at the one on the west side of town. I haven't worked here long enough to know if this has happened before or how often, but I know I'm seeing a boat load of reports with pneumonia and flu-like symptoms.

Ditto on my wishes for everyone to stay well.

Wow. What are the symptoms you're seeing? I'm - wondering if we had this flu over

Thanksgiving while visiting the Tampa-Sarasota area. Something hit 7 or 8 of 10 adults (!) and 1 of 2 small children who'd gathered from 4 states and Canada, and searching finds that cases of H3N2 were rising "after Thanksgiving." Started with fever, significant weakness, sore throat, congestion. Nobody seemed to have significant body aches but most had development of lung involvement after the first day or two. I didn't go to a doctor, and it took me a good 3 weeks to clear enough to finally stop wheezing.

Sounds just like what DH and I have. - grits

Fever, chills, body aches, chest congestion, general ook. It's responding to Tamiflu, but I wouldn't wish this on Vern Davenport.

They really need to hurry the DRACO broad spectrum antiviral through. They've tested it on 15 mammal species so far without serious side effects and as far I'm concerned next time I get the cold or flu they can make me the first human trial. It can cure the flu (probably all of 'em), the cold (maybe all of 'em) and even the heavy hitters like dengue, marburg and ebola (the previous treatments being fire, of course.) But because of bureaucratic red tape - and the possibility that you'll mutate like Jeff Goldblum in the Fly - they won't give it to us. Lab rats get all the cool drugs.

LOL about Vern Davenport. Still, if he does get it, then we can test DRACO on him first.

Get well soon!

Thanks :) - grits

Public Says Health Care Bill Doesn’t Go ‘far Enough’Jan 12, 2010
By Sahil KapurMonday, January 11th, 2010 -- 8:14 pm Far from overreaching on health care reform, a plurality of the public thinks President Obama and Democrats have done too little to regulate the insurance industry, hold down costs and extend coverage, a new poll finds. Forty-three percent of Americans said the health care bill goes "not far enough" in regulating health insurance companies, according to a new CBS survey released Monday evening. Just 18 percent deemed it "about right" and 27 p ...

Georgia--No ACA, No Emergency Room CareMar 01, 2014
Talk about getting what you vote for. Move out of Georgia if you can. . . **** Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) has a problem: rural hospitals keep closing, overwhelmed by financial troubles they can’t solve on their own. The obvious solution – accepting Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act – is the one thing Deal refuses to even consider. There is no great mystery here as to why the rural hospitals can’t keep their doors open. These facilities have routinely covered low- ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

to own guns. This kinda blows the argument that stricter gun control will curb murder and mayhem.  The younger one wasn't old enough to own or buy a gun. The older brother never applied.  He probably wouldn't have been able to lawfully own a gun anyway because of his previous charge in 2009. They didn't have assault weapons, either, so that blows another argument. Get mad all you gun control posters want, but facts are facts and it's something I've been trying ...
