Keeping kids busy while they visit

Posted: Mar 6, 2013

This summer I am hopefully going to have some little girls come and visit, sisters, one 9 and one 11. I hope they will be visiting for about 20+ days. I will be working part-time while they are here and interested in finding some activities to keep them busy while I am working. I am probably going to get Netflix but do not want to have them just constantly watching movies. I know they like to draw, write letters, do artsy stuff but other than paper, pens, crayons and the like, hoping to get some other ideas about things to keep them busy and happy. Thanks. ;

or decorate their own. You can probably buy a couple starter kits at Michaels (or craft store in your area), and you can let them bake cupcakes with you that they can decorate themselves. You can get decorating ideas off the internet too for ideas that don't need too much pastry bag work.

If they like crafts, they should enjoy it.

Just a thought though... it can get messy. If you make them clean up after themselves, that'll keep them busy too.

My daughter loves arts and crafts. - sm

Go to the arts and crafts aisle of Wal-Mart. They have tons of box crafts that are inexpensive and can give hours of fun. They have jewelry making, pottery, key chain making, weaving, painting, sand bottles, etc. My daughter and her little friends love that kind of stuff.

She also loves dry erase boards more than pen/paper. For snacks, buy plain Jane cooks and some icing and sprinkles and let them decorate cookies themselves and ask them to make you an extra special one, they will love that:)

I only have two kids, but my house is where all of the kids stay. I usually have at least four kids here at the time and sometimes up to 10, so we know how to have fun.

Out of the loop, what are box crafts? - Lovinthesekids

I am thrilled about the comments thus far. Being as the girls have not baked before and being as my hubby is a neat freak in "his" kitchen, might not be a good idea for the baking part but I love the artsy stuff and think these little bugs would also. Also will have to find out about dry erase boards as seriously, much out of the loop!

They are boxes you buy at Wal-Mart - sm

Around 10 bucks each, some cheaper. They have making jewelry out of beads, out of string, tye dye kits, weaving, pottery, stamping, scrap booking, etc. Great entertainment for kids, I assure you.

Buy the short bread plain cookies and icing and sprinkles and let them decorate their own cookies, no baking required.

My granddaughters that age still play Barbie - Board Games? Chutes & Ladders?

My grandkids also bring their XBox and play that a lot, too. Also, they like hair accessories, too. Have fun!

My 11yo learned to knit this year, that could be something to work on - anon

Her Christmas present was a book called Chicks with Sticks and we bought one pair of needles and yarn. She has since made a couple of scarves and a shawl. My knitting skills were rudimentary, at best, but youtube has helped. Origami is also good for that age, or calligraphy.

jigsaw puzzles are fun - sm

You can often find them for a dollar at local thrift shops, etc.

Wooden Boxes - Dollar Stores

[ In Reply To ..]
Go to your local dollar store and see if they have plain hard wood boxes, small ones. The kids can decorate them by painting them or cutting out colorful pictures from magazines and gluing them on. They could do "themes" like flowers, animals, or just plain pretty colors made into like a collage.

Arts and crafts doesn't have to be expensive, especially for kids. If they're creative, maybe they can just come up with their own ideas on what they'd like to do.

You could buy cheap coffee mugs (like at a dollar store)and some glass paint, and have them decorate the mugs. These can be "set" on the dry cycle of a dishwasher, but read the print on the glass paint first for instructions.

Take them to the dollar store in the craft section and let them choose what they want to do. Creative kids really don't need any direction. If you can afford the more pricey craft stores (like Michael's) take them there.

If they like to sew, how about counted cross-stitch or embroidery?

They can also make greeting cards. You can buy a packet of blank "cards" pretty cheap. Go through your old costume jewelry and see what little blings you could let them have to put on the cards. Cloth bows or any doo-dads can also be put on the cards.

When I was a kid, we used macaroni (like elbow or ziti), glued them on little boxes (shoe box, whatever) then spray painted them gold. We would put a piece of felt inside the box to make it pretty for storing things.

I think the kids should decide. You can bring up the ideas, though, in case they're out of ideas.

...in a word, Pinterest. It's a fabulous source for ideas.

Assuming you haven't joined, it's a virtual bulletin board where anyone can "pin" anything that interests them. There is a metric buttload of interesting kid crafts, science experiments that would have blown my mind as a youngster, and cheap/easy/fun activities, many of which can be supplied entirely at the dollar store. It's easy to navigate, but be warned - it's highly addictive and a major time sink.

When I joined, you had to be invited. If you're not a member and want/need an invite, email me and I'll hook you up.

I have found the site and yes, very addictive. I had not seen the particulars you speak of though but will surely check that out. Thanks!

I thought I missed a lot of discussion since there's a ton of messages.  The only problem I had is when I started to read them.  There's just WAY too much name calling here for me right now, so I'm going to take a little break.  I'll miss the lively discussions that we were having before it got ugly.  I really do enjoy coming here but not to read that kind of garbage.  Life's too short, you know what I mean? Regarding Your Son's Visit....Jul 12, 2010
You are a whole lot luckier than me and my husband.  You got 3-4 hours.  I would love even that much.  Our DIL sounds so much like yours, only much, much WORSE.  Our son is riding in the same boat as your son.  I don\'t know how old your son is but ours is 35 and has 10, 7 and 2-1/2 year old children.  I thought I was alone in my agony but apparently not.  I\'m so sorry for you.  I know that feeling many times over.  It won\'t get any b ...

Visit With NeurosurgeonJan 17, 2012
Well yesterday I ended back up in the ER. My entire spine is numb. They did MRis and I went to see the neurosurgeon. He says it is not my neck and says I have a "central nervous system disorder" and wants me to go back to the neurologist because I have bilateral trigeminal neuralgia. I am so sick of being tossed around I don't know what to do.  Please pray that the previous neuro will see me again. I cannot take any more. Thank you. ...

Doctors VisitAug 13, 2013
My grandson had been complaining of abdominal pain for a few weeks on and off so my grandson made an appointment yesterday with a GI doc, well known in my town. We went to the appointment, I paid the $25.00 copay and it was the shortest doctors appointment I have ever been to. He walked in asked what the problem was and then said well lets schedule some tests to see what is going on. He scheduled both an EGD and colonoscopy on an 18 year old. Never touched my grandson, never felt his belly. ...

Do Doctor's Visit Really Cost This Much?Sep 08, 2016
So, I'm one of those people generally don't go to the doctor unless they are spurting blood across the room, but... A couple months ago, I found a lump in my breast, so I made an appointment with a GYN. I went there, they had me leave a urine sample, he felt the lump, wrote me a referral to a breast surgeon and for a mammogram/ultrasound and told me it would definitely need to be biopsied (freaking me out some more) and that was it. I had the mammogram/ultrasound. His office call ...

People Come To Visit And Act Like They Own The Place?Sep 16, 2010
Spouse's daughter and her family are here from Florida again and I don't think I can handle it. They take over my house. No consideration for the fact that they are GUESTS and not permanent residents. Use my collectable cups instead of the everyday ones, hoard the towels and use them over and over (YUCK) and for some reason have a problem shutting the cupboard doors completely. And I won't even mention that they have an aversion to turning off lights and run the tv in t ...

From The Woman Who Had The 2 Girls VisitOct 20, 2013
I was reading the post on the Gab Board about the person asking how to get trust back in her partner. I was amazed to see that a person on here was guessing about "the one with the 2 girls for summer." Were you not ever told not to assume things? This is the person with the 2 girls for the summer, so you put it. The person writing about the trust issue is not me. I have no trust issues with anyone, certainly not my husband. I have no idea why coming on this board and asking the most simple o ...

Pope/Trump VisitMay 24, 2017
Trump said he "won't forget what" the Pope said to him in their private meeting. And the Vatican put out a nice statement after their meeting saying the two leaders talked about "the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue" I hope world peace is what he won't forget. I hope that he will stop the incessant attacks and bombing by the U.S. In other news, Trump seems to have taken back that NATO is "obsolete" with a simple statement ...
