Click on the link to see where billions and billions of stimulus money would go for high speed rail lines. Note that 3/4 of them do not connect to the rest of the country. They are mostly 'local' rail lines. At the bottom or side of the chart, you can click on each line and see the projected cost of each.
In my honest opinion, from reading some of the other newspapers and journals, most of these lines will be so fast, anywhere between 100-236 mph trains, yet only cut 1/2 hour of time off a commuter's trip. Is it really worth the cost? Obama thinks it is and I think it's because Japan and China already have these rail lines...but what he fails to mention is that those trains are not just local lines. I surely don't want to be in or on a vehicle that runs that fast. I like to look at the scenery passing the windows. Those were some of my memories when there was train service in my area.
The problem with people in this country is everyone wants to "get there yesterday." Even cars....speed limit is 65, they drive 85-90. Yet, they didn't get to their destination any faster. I've seen it. They may have gained a few miles at first, but the first time they hit a red light or stop sign, I'm right behind them just by following the speed limit.
