Need ideas for a non-alcohol hostess gift

Posted: May 14, 2015

Our family has been invited to dinner while on vacation in another city.  We are teetotalers,  so I'd rather not take a bottle of wine.  Flowers might be okay, but may be hard to find in a strange city,  so I would like other ideas for something we might take for a hostess gift, ideally something that could be purchased at home and transported.  Thanks for any suggestions.

A few ideas. - Please sm.

Are you going to another state? If so, something your state is famous for might be nice. For example, my Maine friends gave me cookie mix with a lobster-shaped cookie cutter. I have given gift packs of huckleberry pancake mix, jam, and tea. Another time, salmon-shaped chocolate bars. Maybe instead of flowers, a plant in a basket. Wherever you are going, I hope you have fun.

A lot of grocery stores have herb pots, that could work--sm - anon

Some nice tea towels or some baked goods. After I have hosted something, I find a nice breakfast baked good very welcome the next day. This could include some coffee or tea if you know the preference of your hosts.

A hostess gift should be something they like, and if they like wine but you find giving wine offensive, then certainly a food item that is non-perishable and has a reasonably good shelf life--like biscotti or a gourmet canned food you think they would enjoy--is always welcomed.

If they do a lot of entertaining, welcomed are cocktail-sized napkins. If they are wine drinkers and you're not against getting them a pretty wine bottle topper/cork, they would appreciate that. They have some beautiful ones out there.

While flowers are always appropriate if you know they're not allergic, I personally would not bring a plant-type of thing. I don't like when people bring me potted plants, because I have to take care of them and I have enough of what I want in that line.

For sure, do not bring any food item to contribute to the appetizers, dinner or dessert for that night unless you've been asked to. I find it wholly inappropriate to expect the hostess to serve an unexpected item, when she's probably already got the dinner settings and serving plates organized.

I had a nice dinner one night set up, and our friends brought over one of our favorite dishes when we eat at their house. It was her stuffed clams, and they are delicious, but I hadn't planned on them--and they're not something you can reheat another day, or they will overcook and be rubbery. I had to jump into action and get serving plates and sit down to eat them right away, when we had planned on relaxing on the patio with cold hors'd'ouevres before our hot meal.

My clams are just an example, but anything, even chips, is inappropriate. I had another instance where we planned a very well-planned meal with lots of food, and 3 couples brought in chips and dip. Well, then I had to get bowls, plates, etc., and people got too full to eat our planned dinner.

LOL, I guess I went on and on, didn't I?

Love love love - polite hostess gift idea.

A wine bottle topper, a pretty hand blown one, or wine glass charms is such a nice idea. Pier 1 really has a nice selection of these. Would be able to be packed along in your luggage easily with a cute gift bag and some nice tissue paper and ribbon to do up after you get to your hotel. Or a wine-cicle. Same for a nice biscotti for the next morning that they can have with coffee the morning after. I really like the presentation more than anything...a sweet gift bag with pretty ribbon.

Enjoy your celebration!

Not the OP - But...

I had also suggested the bottle topper, but it might be the OP is offended by anything alcohol, so we aren't clear if she likes that idea--so ditto on the charmers.

At our house, we love our wine glass charmers and bottle toppers that people bring us. We have some beautiful toppers---nautical, old country French, crystal, abalone, things like that. The charmers come in handy so everyone knows whose wine glass is whose, and they do make for a pretty table setting when everyone is gathered at the dinner table.

To OP: It is so nice you want to bring a hostess gift. Keep it simple and practical and something they would like, but yet stay within your comfort zone of no alcohol related items.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. One thing that makes - OP...sm

it difficult is that I really do not know these people at all. They are my husband's relatives, but he has not seen them since he was a kid.

OH - So...

You don't even know if they like wine. I assumed they did, since that was the first thing you thought to bring.

Bring some biscotti and maybe some special-blend coffees. If they don't like that, they can always re-gift it.

Kinda Strange - Hmm

Has there been any contact at all? Cards, phone, e-mails, social media?

I would feel funny going to or inviting anyone for a meal who I hadn't seen or stayed in touch with since I was a kid. They have no idea what foods you like, don't like, might be allergic to...probably a restaurant would have been a better idea on their part.

Nonclutter Gift Ideas For A 6 YO Girl?Dec 07, 2011
I would like to get a friend's 6-year-old daughter something, but their house is small, and the grandparents tend to give quite a bit. Any ideas that will not cause more clutter? For example, for an adult, I could give cookie ingredients in a jar. Adult makes the cookies, tosses or donates the jar, eats the cookies, no clutter left over (except on the hips maybe). This is such a creative group, I'm hoping you can help. Thanks! ...

Gift Ideas For Little Girl's First Birthday? - SmMar 12, 2013

Unique Christmas Gift IdeasDec 03, 2013
We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty o ...

Husbands Best Friends Son Is Turning 2. We Need Gift Ideas. Jun 04, 2011
This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew.  It has been 30 years since we had a 2 year old so we are feeling challenged about what to get.  This is family #2 for the dad and mom who are ages 51 and 49 and both have children out of college.  He is an only child of two avid shopaholics, so needless to say he has been indulged and spoiled since day one.  What do you get for the ...

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

Alcohol, Tobacco, And FirearmsDec 18, 2012
I read with interest the various arguments about how tighter gun control will not reduce gun violence. One of the more popular arguments advances the idea that those who want to kill will find a way to get a gun. I don't doubt that this is true, but let's take this idea for a little walk around the park, shall we? We would all probably agree that minors who want to consume alcohol or tobacco will find a way to get it. So, why do we even bother with these silly laws that prohibit mi ...

My Daughter Has Swimmers' Ear. Does Alcohol And Vinegar Drops In The Ear Work?Jun 23, 2011
She's just finishing up a course of amoxicillin for an abscessed tooth she had.  So when she started complaining of her ear hurting, I couldn't believe it would be infected.  She swims almost every day.  Plus over the weekend went on a trip and she swam over the weekend and then went to a water park on Monday.  Needless to say her ear is bothering her.  Ibuprofen works to get rid of the pain, but she feels there's water in her ear and I want to try to get ...

Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010
What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months?  She's a very nice person.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me.  Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something?  I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea.  Flowers m ...

Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010
I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. I can't think of any really really bad gifts but those 2 stick out in my mind for some reason. So what has been yours? ...

A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends seemed plea ...

Ten-year Anniversary Gift Nov 11, 2009
In December, my significant other (BF sounds so young) and I will have been together 10 years.  We are both 51 and basically get anything we want when we want it.  He is not the type to wear jewelry except his college ring and a watch (which I got him 5 years ago) and he has anything and everything for his favorite college team.  I was thinking about doing a collage of pictures from the trips we have taken in our 10 years together in a nice picture frame, but not sure.  He is ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...

Strange Dentist GiftJul 21, 2010
So-- I'm in the dentist's chair all afternoon, having $2000 worth of work done. At the end, he asks me what kind of milkshake I would like from the restaurant chain down the street. I say no thanks. He says, Please, my treat, I insist! How could anyone say no! So I say vanilla. And he sends his assistant, who brings me back a giant chocolate milkshake. Which is the last thing I feel like eating, but I take it, to be polite. And give it to a family member. Who wants something frozen tou ...

Charity Donation As GiftNov 21, 2012

White Elephant Gift ExchangeDec 09, 2011
We are invited to a white elephant party this weekend. Have never gone to one before. I did a search and it seems like people like to do funny gifts. I'm not that clever and my husband suggested we give a wine rack (wood top and bottom with black metal center - holds nine bottles) that we were going to send to Goodwill. At a party last weekend the host told us that last year one of the single guys (first timer) gave an expensive painting. So they were joking that the person who g ...
