Holiday gift giving

ONE GREAT IDEA!!!

Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin’s on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day or a massage for an hour at the Spa down the street.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is
struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the waitress, minimum wage service worker, or babysitter a nice BIG tip.  (Original post said to tip mailman or trash man, but both of these would be federal and city employees who don’t need a tip—they have a paycheck and benefits).

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

I just adapted a new holiday tradition!

Thank you!

Not all trash men are city employees and - I am sure that even if they are,

they could use a tip. I really can't understand people. I am going to make sure to tip my trash man right before I go out and buy for my family whatever they have said that they want, Chinese or otherwise.

go hug your trash man - and

get all the carcinogen-laced Chinese items you want!

I guess I can't understand people either!
my trash guys are self-employed - keep my trash state side!

I live in an apartment complex that contracts with a local service to provide valet service to pick trash up from outside my front door 5 days a week. I always give them a small gift card for putting up with my smelly trash. I also give my mail carrier a 4-pack of latte in cans. I have wonderful delivery of mail and terrific trash service. People are people and deserve recognition for their hard work whether they live in the states or elsewhere.

and I hug him every day. But before he took over going to the landfill, I made a plate of homemade Christmas cookies and candy every year to give to the trashmen. Funny, though, I never thought about the mailman. I think I'm going to do that!

I always give my postman $20 Starbucks gc - Jackie

Love this post... - SP

That's why I make homemade goodies, gift bags, and jars. I also only give gift cards or Made in the USA clothes/products as much as possible. I agree 100% with your post and also need to save $$ on this holiday stuff, so I limit the number of people that I "have to buy for" to less than 10. Everyone else gets treats or a free e-card or one big greeting on Facebook sent to everyone. It's the sign of the times.

Call me lazy, call me cheap, call me breaking Christmas tradition, but a Merry Christmas said to me in person or via technology beats a hastily bought gift or regift. I'd rather have nothing than feel obligated.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

What I Learned This Holiday About Next Holiday ...Dec 27, 2009
I learned I will not purchase any gifts from the "wish lists" of the youth in our family.  Yes, this includes my own kids. Only 1 out of the 4 had any surprises at all in their gifts.  Mind you, these 4 range in age from 9 to 24 years.  The 24yo was surprised.  The other 3 knew exactly what they were getting - recognized the boxes - made such statements about knowing all their gifts.  Not hateful, not ungrateful but expectant. The 2 youngest are my nephews.  Neith ...

Holiday Squabble May 13, 2013
I have two grown 30+ year old sons who have jealousy and rivalry issues.  One son invited me, their step-dad, his sister, and his grandmother to lunch for Mother's Day.  I accepted and asked if his brother was invited and he said no.  I thought maybe my other son would be at his in-laws, but he wasn't.  He got hurt.  I tried to make other plans with him in the afternoon, but he was hurt and rude.  I finally told the oldest son that I would have to cancel l ...

Holiday Tipping QuestionNov 21, 2012
Here's my question - The owner of the salon where I get my hair cut and colored is the one who does my hair 95% of the time.  Her prices are very reasonable for the area where I live, about half the cost of other places around.  I've always tipped in the past, which she often refuses or gives me free product in return, and yes, I know you're not technically supposed to tip the owner of the salon, but I've always felt like you tip for good service.  I'm won ...

If You Are Opting Out Of Holiday Commercialism This YearOct 23, 2013
Since the holiday season is only about 2 months from now, I wanted to share this great idea that was just passed along to me from a friend. If you, or someone you know is bowing out of the commercialism and materialism of the holiday season by saying "no more stuff", you can register on the SoKind Registry so that the gift-giver instead can give "experiences" like various types of lessons (cooking, music, etc), national park passes, zoo memberships, classes to learn a new skill, hot balloon ride ...

Vent About My Hubby During This Wonderful Holiday Season ... (sm)Dec 23, 2010
Every year at Christmas my hubby is able to take two weeks off, which is wonderful for him but is beginning to stink for me.  By the time his vacation is over I will be extremely resentful towards him and I hate that.  In years past he has always done everything he can to help me out while I am working, cleaning the house, wrapping presents, picking up little odd and end gifts, etc.  However, this year all he has done is lay on the couch and sleep after sleeping until 11:00 every ...

Hillary Off Campaign Trail For 'drug Holiday'Oct 19, 2016
http://mobile.wnd.com/2016/10/hillary-off-campaign-trail-for-drug-holiday/ “A ‘drug holiday’ is often prescribed for Parkinson’s disease patients,” Noel explained to WND. “The problem is that Parkinson’s patients need increased doses of their medication as the disease progresses.” A drug holiday, he said, would “allow her physicians to get her drug-free for a while, so she can be on lower doses when the drugs are restarted.” “She needs to be able to come on stage a ...

Sarah Palin Questions Obama White House Holiday Card Dec 22, 2011
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R) attacked the White House holiday card in an article on Fox News Radio. The front of the card shows the Obamas' dog, Bo, sitting in a very Christmas-like setting, with a fireplace decorated with wreaths and red ribbons, and a table with a poinsettia plant and presents. "From our family to yours, may your holidays shine with the light of the season," reads the inside of the card, which is signed by the Obamas (including Bo). Palin characterized ...

Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010
What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months?  She's a very nice person.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me.  Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something?  I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea.  Flowers m ...

Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010
I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.
