Has anyone ever had parents take back a Christmas gift?

My husband and I do not get along with my stepdad. He is greedy and just a terrible person. Too much to go into. We had words with him. Anyways, he decided he would take back a Christmas gift that was from my mom and him last year. It was an outside TV antenna. He said it was his and he was taking it back. I thought when you gave someone a gift it was theirs? I just said ok whatever.

Thats a shame. I would be hesitant to take anymore - gifts from him.

and yes, I have had that happen before with an ex-boyfriend before I got married. I eventually told him I didn't want anything else from him. Every time we had a big argument he would do that. He got me a cell phone and I eventually went out and got my own because everytime we got into it, he tried to take it back. Thats called being an indian giver.

It is YOUR property, not his, and if you wish to do so, you could certainly go to the police and press charges. Although for the sake of keeping a modicum of peace in the family, I can understand why you would not do so (neither would I) but you do need to understand that antenna absolutely does belong to you, not to him. When your parents gave it to you, he and your mother relinquished all rights to it, as is the usual custom with Christmas gifts, and the judge would certainly see it that way. Your stepfather could possibly spend some quality time in jail (or even prison depending on the value of the antenna) if you did choose to press charges. Further, it is attached to your house to your house, it is a fixture which definitely makes it your property. And I think you could also have the man prosecuted for vandalism as well in that case.

He's wrong on many fronts but it doesn't matter - you did the right thing. When some time has passed consider if you could call a "truce" with him to try to work on what's wrong with the three-way relationship. It's possible. Both sides have to agree to put down their dukes and be fair. If you think that can't happen here, just keep your distance. Stay on the high road at least and you won't contribute to a worse problem. :)

It sounds like that family member has always been a problem. I have family like that. No matter how hard you try, they keep coming up with new ways to shock and disappoint you. You can't change that person; you just have to accept them for who they are and lead a life with as little contact as possible. Asking a camel to quack gets you nowhere.

I have tried, but he is so difficult. His own siblings have no contact with him. That should say something. He is just one of those you have to have no contact with.

How much fun could you have with that, though...little things to make him so aware you're having fun with it....like repackaging the Christmas gift, still in the box, and presenting it to him, with a card that says he can have it, since he'll end up taking it anyway.
