Handcrafted, inexpensive Christmas gift ideas.
Posted: Dec 1, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few:
1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe!
2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. Use poster paint to color the wreath green, red, silver, etc. Using hot glue, design the acorns upon the cardboard wreath. Can be used as a candle holder or add a wall hanger to the back for the door or the wall.
3. Cut out just the front of beautiful Christmas cards from years past. These can be cut out into tree ornament shapes, decorated with rhinestones, glitter, buttons, ribbon, etc., and hung upon the tree.
Let's keep this going!

What awesome ideas! - sm

I'm not at all talented when it comes to crafts, but I might be able to handle no. 1 and no. 3.
I bet no. 3 would also work if we want to make our own Christmas cards out of card stock. Hmm....I can't wait to see!
Silverware roll - anon

I will be using fabric scraps to make a silverware roll for DH. He takes his lunch often and is not a fan of plastic silverware. There will be a slot for fork, spoon, knife and chopsticks.
My daughter will be making holders for travel tissues. Cut 3 pieces slightly larger than a pack of tissue, fold 2 rectangles in half and sew edges and then attach to larger rectangle. Slip the pack of Kleenex inside and is something pretty in the purse for grandmas.
Mason jar idea - easy

Use one of the smaller size Mason jars for this.
Take a small Christmas tree, about 3-4 inches tall and glue it centered on the inside of the jar. Sprinkle just a little bit of fake snow in the bottom of the jar to cover the tree stand. Screw the lid back on. Decorate the rim and top of the jar lid with bling, flowers, ribbon, lace trim and a tag for gift giving.
So simple but really cute. Makes a cute Christmas tree for a desk.
A twist on this is to use a spray adhesive and a white tree. Spray with a coating of the adhesive and sprinkle any color of extra fine glitter on the tree and then decorate the lid, etc., with coordinating colors. I made one with all pinks.
An easy, sew-it-yourself plastic bag dispenser: - Artsyfartsy - (sm)

I still have this gift a friend gave me about 25 years ago! It's a tubular bag with a drawstring opening at the top, and an elastic opening at the bottom. It's made with pretty fabric that looks cute in the kitchen.
I hang mine in the kitchen, and when I'm done removing my groceries from all the plastic bags, I put them into the top of the bag dispenser, and when I need a bag,I just pull one out from the bottom. I reuse shopping bags in lots of different ways, like lining wastebaskets, or scooping cat litter, etc., and this is a great way to do it.
It's a cute hand-made gift that's inexpensive and easy to make. It could also be used as a mini laundry bag, or storage and retrieval of all sorts of small objects, or pieces of clothing.

I am so NOT crafty, but some things I manage to pull off.
Make styrofoam or glass Christmas ball ornaments. Styrofoam is safer. Just wrap leftover ribbons around, put some decorative push pins to hold the ribbons on, use glitter glue. EVERYONE loves home-made ornaments, no matter how many ornaments they own.
For those who can draw: Get some inexpensive wine glasses, mugs, whatever you think they would like and draw some pretty whatevers you are good at; flowers, foliage, palm trees. Make sure you use the right paint and properly "set it" over heat---or they also have paint that doesn't need any special setting, but you have to be careful about how you wash them.
For those who can't draw: Ditto on above, but make a stencil out of something pretty you saw in a magazine or wherever, and paint in between. Or buy inexpensive stencils.
I like to buy "blank" Christmas stockings, then glitter glue designs or the person's name on them.
All the above can be found at your local dollar store!

Unique Christmas Gift IdeasDec 03, 2013We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty o ...

Has Anyone Ever Had Parents Take Back A Christmas Gift?Feb 14, 2013My husband and I do not get along with my stepdad. He is greedy and just a terrible person. Too much to go into. We had words with him. Anyways, he decided he would take back a Christmas gift that was from my mom and him last year. It was an outside TV antenna. He said it was his and he was taking it back. I thought when you gave someone a gift it was theirs? I just said ok whatever. ...
Nonclutter Gift Ideas For A 6 YO Girl?Dec 07, 2011I would like to get a friend's 6-year-old daughter something, but their house is small, and the grandparents tend to give quite a bit. Any ideas that will not cause more clutter? For example, for an adult, I could give cookie ingredients in a jar. Adult makes the cookies, tosses or donates the jar, eats the cookies, no clutter left over (except on the hips maybe). This is such a creative group, I'm hoping you can help. Thanks! ...
Gift Ideas For Little Girl's First Birthday? - SmMar 12, 2013My friends' little baby girl is having her first birthday next month, and I was invited to her birthday bash! I don't have kids, and am pretty clueless as to what would be a good gift idea for her. Does anyone have any ideas for something that would be fun (and safe!) for Baby, and/or useful for Mom? Or something for both of them?

Need Ideas For A Non-alcohol Hostess GiftMay 14, 2015Our family has been invited to dinner while on vacation in another city. We are teetotalers, so I'd rather not take a bottle of wine. Flowers might be okay, but may be hard to find in a strange city, so I would like other ideas for something we might take for a hostess gift, ideally something that could be purchased at home and transported. Thanks for any suggestions. ...
Buying Potted Herbs For Christmas GiftNov 24, 2009My hubby is really hard to buy for. He is the cook in the family and uses lots of herbs, usually buying them in the store in the vegetable section, not the dried variety. I was wondering if anyone has ever bought in the plant section and if so how do they do? I think he would love being able to do his own picking straight from a fresh herb. ...

Husbands Best Friends Son Is Turning 2. We Need Gift Ideas. Jun 04, 2011This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew. It has been 30 years since we had a 2 year old so we are feeling challenged about what to get. This is family #2 for the dad and mom who are ages 51 and 49 and both have children out of college. He is an only child of two avid shopaholics, so needless to say he has been indulged and spoiled since day one. What do you get for the ...

Christmas Gift Cards For Friend's Kids And Great Nieces And NephewsNov 01, 2010These children range in ages from newborn to 10. Money is tight, but I always try to send them something just for them. But as time has passed their numbers have increased. How much is too little? I was thinking in the range of 15-20? Any input - I don't want to be too cheap - or should I just send a "family giftcard" for all? These children are two for each family I usually send to. ...
$$$ Is Tight This Year. Any Christmas Ideas To Make It Go Further?Nov 19, 2009I get together with a group of friends annually around the holidays. Need Appetizer Ideas For A Christmas Eve Finger Food Party.Dec 14, 2011My family all gather at my mom's house on Christmas eve to open presents and we all bring finger foods or appetizers and sweets. I need some new ideas. I always like to try new recipes, but I'm having some sort of mental block this year. I can't think of anything that sounds good. Ideas For Christmas "Goody Bags" For AdultsDec 13, 2015We will be attending a small Christmas party where there is some expectation of bringing a small gift for everyone. We usually know about half the people there. I have done some small generic gifts of pancake "mixes" with maple syrups, hand lotions/organic soaps, home baked goodies/candy, etc.
Anyone have any inexpensive ideas? Ideas for making the bags? Christmas is just around the corner! ...
Inexpensive Prescription Sleeping Pill?Nov 02, 2009What is an inexpensive prescription sleeping medication (for middle-of-the-night awakening) that might be on Walmart's or Walgreen's $4-a-month list? Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months? She's a very nice person. We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me. Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something? I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea. Flowers m ...
Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. I can't think of any really really bad gifts but those 2 stick out in my mind for some reason. So what has been yours? ...
A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010Dear Diary,
For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of
personal training at the local health club. Although I am still
in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.
I called the club and made my reservations with a personal
trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.
Friends seemed plea ...

Graduation GiftMay 16, 2013Need help, don't want to give cold cash for college grad. It seems cards like AMEX, etc. have hidden fees when used. Also, what do you consider appropriate for a BS degree? Have several others coming up after this one and expect each higher degree should be a little more than the high school or junior college. Kind of stumped here, lots of different levels of graduation coming at once in the next 3-4 years. Just want to be fair. Thanks. ...
Need Help Salvaging A GiftDec 20, 2014I had ordered 2 customized luggage tags from Zazzle.com. The printed image is in between 2 pieces of acrylic. Unfortunately, they mixed up the addresses on the backs of 2 of them and they have not gotten back to me yet. If I do not hear from them Monday, I will be contacting my credit card company about the charges.
What I am curious about is how to go about separating the acrylic, switching out the wrong information and then getting it to adhere together again. Does any ...

Ten-year Anniversary Gift Nov 11, 2009In December, my significant other (BF sounds so young) and I will have been together 10 years. We are both 51 and basically get anything we want when we want it. He is not the type to wear jewelry except his college ring and a watch (which I got him 5 years ago) and he has anything and everything for his favorite college team. I was thinking about doing a collage of pictures from the trips we have taken in our 10 years together in a nice picture frame, but not sure. He is ...
Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011ONE GREAT IDEA!!!
Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...
