SHOWER/GIFT OPINION NEEDED

Posted: Apr 20, 2011

My DD shower is a few weeks and thirty people are coming to the shower and 30 people are not (probably because they live two hours away).  My question is ten gifts have come in the mail for her.  Would it be okay to have DD and fiance open the presents at my house and not bring them to the shower.  DD's sister who is MOH and giving the shower feels there will be thirty gifts that will be opened at the shower and if the other gifts are opened at the shower it would drag that part even longer. What do you think?

I don't think it really matters. - Kendra

I think that I would let the bride-to-be decide how she wants to do it, but it probably is fine either way. Good luck to your daughter and her fiance. Enjoy the wedding!

I would think it would be fine not to open the other 10 (or more?) at the shower. Those people won't be there to see their gifts opened/appreciated anyway, and it is a time-hog, imo.

I Agree - Not Peggy Post Either

I'm no Peggy Post, either, but I don't think the people at the shower should have to sit through the opening of that many gifts of people who won't be there and they may not even know. I think it's even excessive for anyone to have to sit through the other present openings, anyway, because eventually people want to get socializing but feel rude while a present is being opened.

Thanks to everyone. I am glad that you feel the same way as I do. The shower is only three hours long and it would be fun to at least socialize. My daughter's future mother-in-law is bringing 25 gifts from herself (I just found out when my DD emailed me). The future mom-in-law told her. That means 30 people have to sit through 55 presents. I told my DD I am going to look like a cheap mother and she said no you are going to look normal. My daughter thinks that is too much to bring to her shower and takes away from the guests.
Sounds like the future MIL just wants to show off - a bit NM

I was going to say that about showing off, but I didn't.

I am curious, though. Maybe I'm out of the modern loop, but when did bridal showers become a gathering of 60 people? Used to be, just the Maid/Matron of Honor or close friend invited the wedding party, some family members, and a few close friends and had a surprise at someone's house or a small rental hall. I personally would not want to feel obligated to a shower gift PLUS a wedding gift unless I was very close to the bride and/or grrom.

I AM hoping all these people invited to the shower are also invited to the wedding. I was once invited to a shower, but not the wedding, and felt it was just a way of the bride-to-be to get gifts.

MIL showing off - Maybe not wait and see

When I had a bridal shower for my DIL to be I bought a clothes hamper and I filled it will all kinds of essentials, clothes hangers, swifter sweeper, cleaning products, sponges, dish detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets. All kinds of stuff that you need to start up your household but add up to alot of money. I guess if I wanted to count them individually I could have said I had 40 gifts for them but it doesn't mean they were gifts like mixers, toasters, crock-pots, etc.

She may just be trying to add a hint of suspense to what she is giving the bride to be.
HERE'S WHAT WE DO (sm) - Yochana

All gifts that are received before the shower especially if she registered at several stores - we unwrap them and display them throughout the house where the shower is held. We display the gifts in the bedrooms (on the bed) in the den, kitchen, etc and each gift has the giver's name on a small card. If the kitchen or dining room is not used during the shower we set the table with the bride's dishes, silverware, pots, pans, etc. Then the only gifts to open are the ones brought by the guests. If the guests arrive early we unwrap their gifts also and display them. Makes for a much more social event and the bride doesn't have to sit there and unwrap presents all through the shower. There is a local store with a bridal registry and they wrap all the gifts in clear cellophane with a huge white bow. That way, the bride doesn't have to unwrap the gift, but can see what it is. Have fun, fun, fun.

PS. Tell future MIL to come early (but don't tell herwhy) and then unwrap all her gifts and display them. LOL

Thanks to everyone. My DD MIL does like to be the center of attention. Anyway she invited 40 people to this shower who live 2 hours away from my DD. She promised they would be coming so we had to find a venue large enough. We invited 15 because we have a very small family. Only 20 of the 40 are coming. I gave her every opportunity to have a separate shower in their state but she would not.Yes they are all invited to the wedding. My DD explained to her that you cannot invite people that are not invited to the wedding to a shower I know she invited them just so they would get a gift because some of these are the MIL
work friends that do not even know her son. She has invited 170 people to the wedding and so far 40 have declined. She invited people she has not seen in years. We invited 80 and have had two declines.

Planning A Baby Shower -- Refreshment Ideas Needed!Jun 01, 2010
I've ordered the cake.  Back when I was having my babies, baby showers consisted of cake, nuts, mints, and punch.  And a couple of games and then of course present time for the mom to be. OPINION NEEDED ON BRIDAL REGISTRYMar 22, 2011
My 25 yo  daughter is getting married in June.  She is a very fussy person. She takes after her grandmother.  She knows what she likes and does not like and she won't settle for anything else.  Very Type A personality. Total opposite of me.  Anyway she has registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and Kohls. ( A lot of practical items that ranges from $4.00 to 100.00). Her future mother-in-law keeps buying her stuff ever since she has become engaged that just is not my ...

Obama's Last Money Shower For The UN, SomeFeb 03, 2017
In its last year in office, the Obama Administration showered at least some $9.2 billion on the United Nations and its sprawling array of organizations, according to a document recently posted on the State Department website. The total is gleaned from a document that summarizes U.S. government spending for international organizations, and is about 20 per cent higher than the $7.7 billion figure given out by State for 2010, before the Obama Administration abruptly quit providing any overall ...

Advice On Recaulking ShowerJun 17, 2015
My very cheap stall shower needs recaulking. I removed the old caulk and cleaned the everything. I've watched several YouTube videos on this, but my shower is very uneven compared to the videos I've watched. What I mean is that at the corner of the shower the wall and shower pan are further apart than on the sides. Has anyone ever done this? I could use some advice from an actual person. Having never done this before I'm not sure if I should use a caulk gun or if I can just squeez ...

Question About Baby Shower Etiquette.Jan 29, 2015
My friend is having her second baby and she decided that I should throw her baby shower this time.  I said sure and I suggested a diaper shower since this is her second baby in a relatively short period of time (2 years) and she has found out she is having the same sex, so in my mind at least, she already has all the "stuff."  She seemed very offended by this, so fine I decided to call it a baby shower and let people decide on their own.  Now my friend has taken to checking in wit ...

Fantastic Meteor Shower Early Tuesday MorningNov 16, 2009
For those interested, there is supposed to be a fantastic meteor shower display peaking from 1 am to daylight on early Tuesday morning.  This is the Leonid shower which occurs about every 33 years.  My sons and I have stayed up and watched them before, and we were not disappointed in the past.  I just hope the weather is right.  We live in the country and this affords a wonderful view.   ...

Belgium: Muslim Migrant Stabs Priest Who Let Him Use Shower.Aug 01, 2016
attack was not terror-related, which they would probably be doing even if it were. What no one is considering, however, is that it is a manifestation of the very different culture of the migrants: one that considers non-Muslims obligated for the financial upkeep of Muslims (cf. Qur’an 9:29), and which sanctifies violence as a holy act (cf. Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, 9:5, 47:4, etc.). The consequences of admitting large numbers of people from such a culture into Europe could well be catastrophic, an ...

Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010
What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months?  She's a very nice person.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me.  Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something?  I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea.  Flowers m ...

Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010
I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. I can't think of any really really bad gifts but those 2 stick out in my mind for some reason. So what has been yours? ...

A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends seemed plea ...

Ten-year Anniversary Gift Nov 11, 2009
In December, my significant other (BF sounds so young) and I will have been together 10 years.  We are both 51 and basically get anything we want when we want it.  He is not the type to wear jewelry except his college ring and a watch (which I got him 5 years ago) and he has anything and everything for his favorite college team.  I was thinking about doing a collage of pictures from the trips we have taken in our 10 years together in a nice picture frame, but not sure.  He is ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. Charity Donation As GiftNov 21, 2012

White Elephant Gift ExchangeDec 09, 2011
We are invited to a white elephant party this weekend. Have never gone to one before. I did a search and it seems like people like to do funny gifts. I'm not that clever and my husband suggested we give a wine rack (wood top and bottom with black metal center - holds nine bottles) that we were going to send to Goodwill. At a party last weekend the host told us that last year one of the single guys (first timer) gave an expensive painting. So they were joking that the person who g ...

Nonclutter Gift Ideas For A 6 YO Girl?Dec 07, 2011
