Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms

Posted: Dec 18, 2012

I read with interest the various arguments about how tighter gun control will not reduce gun violence. One of the more popular arguments advances the idea that those who want to kill will find a way to get a gun. I don't doubt that this is true, but let's take this idea for a little walk around the park, shall we? We would all probably agree that minors who want to consume alcohol or tobacco will find a way to get it. So, why do we even bother with these silly laws that prohibit minors from obtaining these substances? Because it is society's job to put our culture's money where its mouth is. I have never heard anyone argue that tobacco and alcohol laws are useless because kids will find a way to smoke and drink anyway. A country's laws reflect its cultural rules and mores - not only to its citizens - but to the world at large. I know of no nation on earth that doesn't bother with laws that safeguard the public due to the specious, low-utility argument that those motivated enough will break the law anyway. ;

We are not saying we should be without laws - and we sure don't think

kids should be allowed these things. What we are saying is that we have laws in place and that has not stopped these events from happening so what makes you think more laws will stop it? Almost 10,000 deaths in 2011 due to drunk driving but I don't hear you screaming for tighter control on the sale of alcohol.

I think it's pointless - RC

to point out all the other things that also need attention, rather than focusing on the issue at hand. The fact that there are so many alcohol-related deaths doesn't mitigate the fact that we still need to do something to prevent events such as occurred on Friday.

you don't hear me "screaming" about anything - arroz

We have some laws in place with repect to guns. Perhaps there are other considerations to be made with regard to stringency and enforceability. Perhaps we need a cultural paradigm shift, the likes of which have not been seen since the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

When I was little, black people were assaulted by state and local authorities with impunity. As a country, we united to make significant change and huge progress in this regard. I doubt you would disagree with me.

Change can be made, but it usually takes a little more effort than the kind of hyperbolic sensationalism that would characterize dialogue as screaming.

I saw a thought-provoking statement elsewhere - grits

Why do conservatives believe that outlawing abortion will prevent abortions, but strengthening gun legislation is useless?

As an example of why it pays to be armed - sm

Need Ideas For A Non-alcohol Hostess GiftMay 14, 2015
Our family has been invited to dinner while on vacation in another city.  We are teetotalers,  so I'd rather not take a bottle of wine.  Flowers might be okay, but may be hard to find in a strange city,  so I would like other ideas for something we might take for a hostess gift, ideally something that could be purchased at home and transported.  Thanks for any suggestions.   ...
