Unique Christmas Gift Ideas

Posted: Dec 3, 2013

We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty of stuff to choose from that doesn't cost extra-extra in shipping. Another favorite unique place of mine is catalogfavorites.com--not a food place, and more the norm in prices. So, what are your unique ideas? ;

Having a small side business myself, I personally feel it's extremely important to support your local merchants of any type. Almost any town/city has these folks, and they depend on local support. Not only are you helping the artist/merchant, you are keeping a great deal of $$ in your local community, rather than going to some big box store.

That being said, I pretty much just focus on each person for a while and try to come up with something very unique that even they wouldn't have thought of asking for. That technique almost never goes wrong for me. For instance, my Mom's balance is getting a little sketchy these days, so for her birthday, I purchased a cane for her. But, not just any cane, it was one I found on line (yeah, sometimes one does have to look beyond one's city limits for specific items) that is beautifully decorated and is sure to garner a lot of compliments for her. To me, that is important, as she was very hesitant (as many elderly are) to admit that perhaps some sort of ambulation aid was needed.

Just my thoughts on a Wednesday afternoon... Good luck to everyone on finding just that "perfect" gift for everyone. :)

I do that as well - OP

We have local craft fairs here, and I just love some of the items. Probably not in the price range I would spend on myself, but they often have just the perfect special gift for a loved one or friend, and the hand-crafted, locally-made items are soooo unique and it won't kill me to spend it on a gift for someone.

Sometimes, even if I don't have an item in mind, the craft fairs have something I never would have thought of, and it hits me---it's perfect for so-and-so. Never hurts to browse around at the local small shops and fairs.

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

Has Anyone Ever Had Parents Take Back A Christmas Gift?Feb 14, 2013
My husband and I do not get along with my stepdad.  He is greedy and just a terrible person.  Too much to go into.  We had words with him.  Anyways, he decided he would take back a Christmas gift that was from my mom and him last year.  It was an outside TV antenna.  He said it was his and he was taking it back.  I thought when you gave someone a gift it was theirs?  I just said ok whatever.   ...

Nonclutter Gift Ideas For A 6 YO Girl?Dec 07, 2011
I would like to get a friend's 6-year-old daughter something, but their house is small, and the grandparents tend to give quite a bit. Any ideas that will not cause more clutter? For example, for an adult, I could give cookie ingredients in a jar. Adult makes the cookies, tosses or donates the jar, eats the cookies, no clutter left over (except on the hips maybe). This is such a creative group, I'm hoping you can help. Thanks! ...

Gift Ideas For Little Girl's First Birthday? - SmMar 12, 2013
My friends' little baby girl is having her first birthday next month, and I was invited to her birthday bash!  I don't have kids, and am pretty clueless as to what would be a good gift idea for her.  Does anyone have any ideas for something that would be fun (and safe!) for Baby, and/or useful for Mom?  Or something for both of them?  Meerkat =^..^= ...

Need Ideas For A Non-alcohol Hostess GiftMay 14, 2015
Our family has been invited to dinner while on vacation in another city.  We are teetotalers,  so I'd rather not take a bottle of wine.  Flowers might be okay, but may be hard to find in a strange city,  so I would like other ideas for something we might take for a hostess gift, ideally something that could be purchased at home and transported.  Thanks for any suggestions.   ...

Buying Potted Herbs For Christmas GiftNov 24, 2009
My hubby is really hard to buy for. He is the cook in the family and uses lots of herbs, usually buying them in the store in the vegetable section, not the dried variety. I was wondering if anyone has ever bought in the plant section and if so how do they do? I think he would love being able to do his own picking straight from a fresh herb. ...

Husbands Best Friends Son Is Turning 2. We Need Gift Ideas. Jun 04, 2011
This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew.  It has been 30 years since we had a 2 year old so we are feeling challenged about what to get.  This is family #2 for the dad and mom who are ages 51 and 49 and both have children out of college.  He is an only child of two avid shopaholics, so needless to say he has been indulged and spoiled since day one.  What do you get for the ...

Need Some Help With 12 Days Of Christmas IdeasDec 17, 2011
My husband lost his job in June and was out of work until October when he started working as a relief driver for a company delivering bread then in November was laid off.  We have had a very hard year and now that Christmas is here he is still out of work and still no word from unemployment, so we are living on my salary just scraping by.  Each of the boys are getting one gift but we are not buying anything for each other.  I am making him a '12 Days of Christmas Coupon Book& ...

Christmas Gift Cards For Friend's Kids And Great Nieces And NephewsNov 01, 2010
These children range in ages from newborn to 10.  Money is tight, but I always try to send them something just for them.  But as time has passed their numbers have increased.  How much is too little?  I was thinking in the range of 15-20?  Any input - I don't want to be too cheap - or should I just send a "family giftcard" for all?  These children are two for each family I usually send to. ...

$$$ Is Tight This Year. Any Christmas Ideas To Make It Go Further?Nov 19, 2009
I get together with a group of friends annually around the holidays.  We got tired of trading our own baked goods so we decided to trade names this year with a $$ limit.  Still doing the baking for other friends and neighbors (cookies, fudge, bread). Does anyone have any other creative ideas on how to stretch the $$$ during the holidays, recipes, drinks, gifts?  ...

Need Appetizer Ideas For A Christmas Eve Finger Food Party.Dec 14, 2011
My family all gather at my mom's house on Christmas eve to open presents and we all bring finger foods or appetizers and sweets.  I need some new ideas.  I always like to try new recipes, but I'm having some sort of mental block this year.  I can't think of anything that sounds good.  Not to mention I've been invited to a friend's annual Christmas party this weekend and she always asks me to bring the same old macaroni salad I always bring and I ...

Ideas For Christmas "Goody Bags" For AdultsDec 13, 2015
We will be attending a small Christmas party where there is some expectation of bringing a small gift for everyone.  We usually know about half the people there.  I have done some small generic gifts of pancake "mixes" with maple syrups, hand lotions/organic soaps, home baked goodies/candy, etc.   Anyone have any inexpensive ideas?  Ideas for making the bags?   Christmas is just around the corner! ...

Unique Turkey/Stuffing LeftoverNov 13, 2012
Okay, so I'm posting ahead of time, but I just saw something interesting on the show "The Chew," the food talk show with Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Daphne (Dr. Oz's daughter) and Carla. They took leftover stuffing and turkey, stuffed it in red peppers and baked it, then threw gruyere cheese on top and broiled it till cheese was melted.  They cut the bottoms off the peppers just enough so there was no hole, but the pepper could stand up in a baking dish. I thought that sou ...

Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010
What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months?  She's a very nice person.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me.  Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something?  I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea.  Flowers m ...

Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010
I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. I can't think of any really really bad gifts but those 2 stick out in my mind for some reason. So what has been yours? ...

A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends seemed plea ...

Graduation GiftMay 16, 2013
Need help, don't want to give cold cash for college grad. It seems cards like AMEX, etc. have hidden fees when used. Also, what do you consider appropriate for a BS degree? Have several others coming up after this one and expect each higher degree should be a little more than the high school or junior college. Kind of stumped here, lots of different levels of graduation coming at once in the next 3-4 years. Just want to be fair. Thanks. ...

Need Help Salvaging A GiftDec 20, 2014
I had ordered 2 customized luggage tags from Zazzle.com.  The printed image is in between 2 pieces of acrylic.  Unfortunately, they mixed up the addresses on the backs of 2 of them and they have not gotten back to me yet.  If I do not hear from them Monday, I will be contacting my credit card company about the charges. What I am curious about is how to go about separating the acrylic, switching out the wrong information and then getting it to adhere together again.  Does any ...

Ten-year Anniversary Gift Nov 11, 2009
In December, my significant other (BF sounds so young) and I will have been together 10 years.  We are both 51 and basically get anything we want when we want it.  He is not the type to wear jewelry except his college ring and a watch (which I got him 5 years ago) and he has anything and everything for his favorite college team.  I was thinking about doing a collage of pictures from the trips we have taken in our 10 years together in a nice picture frame, but not sure.  He is ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...

Strange Dentist GiftJul 21, 2010
So-- I'm in the dentist's chair all afternoon, having $2000 worth of work done. At the end, he asks me what kind of milkshake I would like from the restaurant chain down the street. I say no thanks. He says, Please, my treat, I insist! How could anyone say no! So I say vanilla. And he sends his assistant, who brings me back a giant chocolate milkshake. Which is the last thing I feel like eating, but I take it, to be polite. And give it to a family member. Who wants something frozen tou ...
