My argument with my insurance

Posted: Nov 11, 2009

The other day, I got a bill for an ambulance.  I got charged the entire $700+ dollars.  Don't get me wrong - those paramedics were fantastic.  I was having severe chest pain and within seconds, they had an IV inserted, my BP checked, nitro sprayed into my mouth and 1 mg of morphine plus some atrophine in my IV and a nasal cannula.

However, I'm being billed the entire amount because the ambulance company is "out of network.".  This will not do.  I dealt with insurance companies and appeals for almost 10 years and I won't put up with this.  I rarely lost appeals then and I don't plan on losing this one.

I called the insurance, telling them that at the time, I was having severe chest pain, nobody was home and I was afraid I was having an MI.  I asked the stupid insurance if the 911 operator was supposed to put me on hold while I'm in a potentially serious situation so she can call them to verify which ambulance company to send.  I also asked her if I was supposed to do same, seeing as how I could barely speak and couldn't get a deep breath without a stabbing pain in my chest.  They told me to send an appeal.  I'll tell you - it's taken me a couple of weeks to calm down about this to where I can send an appeal without words that would make my mom wash my mouth out with soap.  They will not win this.  I'll appeal it all the way to the state insurance commissioner if necessary.

What idiots!  I don't begrudge them their network physicians, hospitals, labs, etc.  But there's no way they should be allowed to regulate ambulances.  What the 911 operator did was call the one closest to my house.

Oh, the severe chest pain and trouble breathing were due to that serious illness last summer.  When I becames septic from letting the UTI go untreated for 10 days, my body became ravaged with one infection after another and it left several areas inflamed.  My chest pain was caused by a bad case of pleurisy and costochondritis.  Gosh, I've been on 7 antibiotics over the last 5 months now.

What's ironic, is we had a reverand who used to come preach at our church.  I just loved him.  He was charismatic when he preached.  He never lost your attention.  He took pauses to let things sink in.  Since we finally found a full time minister, I've had to rely on the tapes that Rev (Parr) makes.  I have about 20 sermon tapes of his and they are fantastic.  The first one I pulled out of the drawer the other day to listen to was about how your physical health is affected by your spiritual mindset.  He talks about carrying grudges for 20 years and that they only eat you up, making you physically sick.  It's a long sermon and I plan on transcribing it in the near future.  If anyone would like a copy, e-mail me at favresvikings@gmail.com.  It will take a little while for me to get it done but I'd be happy to forward the transcript.  He talks a lot about forgiveness, resentment, anger, etc.  I listened to just one of his tapes last year, and had me hooked.  I'll have to get ahold of him and see if he has any new ones (he doesn't charge for them but takes donations.  They are priceless to me, so I always pay him).  I also go watch him preach whenever he's in town.  Oh, he's unusual in one way - he's a presbyterian minister and he's African American.  Generally, they lead toward being Baptist ministers (I know it's not a rule that all Baptist ministers are black and all Presbies are white but the percentage of each is not that high).  Anyway, he does get loud at times, so don't say I didn't warn ya.  ;-)  I think some of you would love the transcript, especially if you're going thru some bad times.

Take care!

I lived in Atlanta in the city limits, a fire station close by that I could drive to within 5-7 minutes. Working 1 day, heard husband in the other room say "oh". I called his name twice, nothing and went in to see him sprawled across the ottoman. I looked at my watch knowing they always ask how long someone has been down. I called 911 and knew exactly what to say, very clear and percise. I think he was dead from the time he fell but I had to make a second call to 911 about 15-20 minutes later before they finally showed and by that time too late to even try resucitation, down so long. I know probably would not have done any good at all even if the ambulance had been right there when he dropped but still, two calls and the fire station being that close. They are the first to show at a time like that.

I agree with you! - sm

We're going over our health insurance options with a fine tooth comb. My husband is self-employed. This is a small family owned firm. Our insurance (for a family of 4) went up 25% this year, and the bill will be $39,000 for the year. No. That's not a typo. That's $1000 less than $40,000. We didn't even make that much money combined when we were first married! When you run a business, you don't necessarily make lots of money. We live modestly, our two sons are at state colleges, I drive a 12-year-old minivan.

Anyway, we're looking at other policies with larger deductibles, and I see over and over again in the various plans that they pay nothing or hardly anything for out-of-network ambulance service. What? To me, ambulance means emergency. Emergency means I'm dialing 911. I'm not shopping for ambulance services. Even were I to do the research on that before an emergency and posted a network ambulance service number by my phone, I'm sure they would not answer a non-dispatched call. Isn't the whole point of having 911 to increase response time?

It's just another way to get money from us! And the companies like to say, "You can appeal." The appeal process is so lengthy that I'm sure there are plenty of people who just give up. So DON'T GIVE UP! This is just wrong.

About 5 years ago I had to call an ambulance for my 18-month-old son. I received the bill for the whole thing as well because the ambulance was "out-of-network." I called the insurance company and proceeded to quiz them, what do you do, ask if the ambulance is in-network on a 911 call? It was obviously a life or death situation. They just had me write a letter stating what had happened and they paid the bill. I was extremely shocked when they said it was out-of-network. Totally pissed me off, but nothing shocks me these days anymore.

Anyone else out there with a son who is under 25 that has been added to your car insurance?  After dealing with our car insurance when our son got his driver's license, I was so aggravated that it cost more "because he is a boy".  I am sorry, but I just don't buy that line.  It is discrimination, plain and simple.  I know they can quote "facts" that boys have more accidents than girls, but that is simply lumping all boys together.  My son waited until he was 19 ...

This morning I attended a meeting at the hospital where I work regarding our 2014 benefits.  Yes, I have insurance through my employer, and yes, I am happy with it, but imagine my surprise when I found out how much the cost of my coverage will increase for 2014 because we are self insured and our hospital was levied a fee of 1,000,000 dollars (yup, one million dollars) for fiscal 2014 to help fund the exchanges.  Of course, guess who pays that?  Yes, all of employees.  so tha ...

An MT Insurance Story...Jan 22, 2014
I had insurance through my MT job but never filed a claim as I am relatively healthy and never met the deductible.  I didn't have a colonoscopy until I was 55 or a mammogram until I was 56, my own fault, but my income had taken a nosedive and preventative care was the least of my worries.  I was just lucky that both turned out OK.  I lost my insurance when I was diagnosed with RA and couldn't maintain full time status or production, pretty close though.  Because of ...
