Obamacare fines for not having insurance

Posted: Jan 17, 2014

I don't have insurance and have not looked into the exchanges yet. Even with my low income I am sure I would qualify for some subsidy, but I just haven't done it yet.

From the thread below about FT-to-PT, somebody mentioned fines for not having insurance. Anybody know the details of that? Will I be fined this year on my taxes for not having insurance? Was I supposed to have insurance by January 1? I know people had to sign up by a certain date in order to have coverage on 1/1, but I don't know when the fines kick in.

H&R Block, Liberty Tax, etc. Good luck to you!

I think it's 1% of yearly income, but there's also a - hardship clause for those who are very poor.

I got "Obamacare" in November.. Wonderful friendly people at the NY exchange site who answered the phone and guided me through the process there, including what tax credits I was entitled to, so I can finally afford good comprehensive health insurance now after many years of having nothing but catastrophic. It's been a very good thing for me.

This is the federal site. You can also sign up at this site under the individuals and families tab. If you live in one of the states who are operating their own exchanges, I believe it will direct you there, or else Google the name of your state and the words "Healthcare exchange".

If you need personalized assistance, you might want to try this web site:

https://localhelp.healthcare.gov/

You type in your zip code and it will give you a list of places that provide help signing up.

Good luck to you.

My understanding is this in the bill there is a clause that says you don't have to sign up. Unsure if that is the case or not, but is interesting

cost so many so much. Depends on your state and age. I honestly am happy for the people it helped but I have the worst coverage I have ever had in my life. Truly will not be seeking any medical care unless it is an emergency. And that .. is sad.

Good post - also have to say too bad those it helped - don't care about those it doen't help

I have seen 2 types of post on this board regarding the health care.

Type 1: Those that praises it up and down, says it helps them, they are saving tons of money, it's cured all their life threatening illnesses and it's the best thing since sliced bread. The results of this for them are so phenomenal that some of the stories seem like a dream out of a fairy tale in Candy Land.

Type 2: Those that got kicked out of their health insurance they were happy with (i.e. a good health plan), now have no insurance (when they used to have insurance) or they are seeing their costs triple and don't know where they are going to get money to pay for this. Those who understand what this truly means for our country. Are happy for those who have health insurance, but are also concerned for their own situation because now they don't have anything.

It's a shame that group 1 doesn't seem to care about group 2 (the I got mine who cares about you phenomenon). Group 1 calls group 2 liars and some even go so far as telling others that it's a good thing they are out of insurance because the plan they had was a "junk plan" or giving details of the person they don't knows budget to include how much money they make a year, what their costs of living are and what they can and cannot afford and everything else they can think of without even knowing any facts trying to discredit that person.

And that is my opinion.
Your opinion is very acceptable and shared by most - Americans.

when I got ovarian cancer, down to 74 lb at one point, and as an IC had no coverage and lost my life savings and almost my life. Now I have Obamacare, and it's a relief to finally be covered if anything else should happen. It costs me about $110.00 a month here in NY.
And all this time I thought it was - BECAUSE OF NUANCE.

Obamacare - It's Nice To Have InsuranceMar 13, 2014
Being a long-time, self-employed contractor, getting medical insurance coverage was always a problem.  Fortunately, I'm retired now and all those FICA payments are paying off now.  I get about $1025 a month SSI.  I'm hearing horror stories about people losing insurance or it going up from $500 to $1500 and people formerly with insurance are now refusing to pay the higher costs.   But for over 10 years I've been without insurance, keeping my fingers crossed I di ...

On Obamacare Insurance Companies Pulling OutJun 22, 2017
Obamacare allows people to wait until they get sick to sign up. That's no different than waiting until my house burns down to sign up for homeowners insurance or waiting until I wreck my car to get car insurance.I understand that there are a lot of people who don't own a house or a car and maybe are unfamiliar with how insurance works.  It is "insurance" which means insuring against what might happen. Health Insurance Premiums Jumped 9% From 2010-2011. Obamacare?Sep 25, 2012

But they exaggerate. The law — the bulk of which has yet to be implemented — has caused only about a 1 percent to 3 percent increase in premiums, according to several independent experts. Obamacare Is Failing From Behind... His Goals For ObamacareJul 20, 2016
1) Have it collapse so that single payer can be implemented amidst the ensuing chaos. 2) Have that happen on somebody else’s watch. Obamacare was designed to fail so the Democrats could “reform” it with complete government provided socialized medicine. That is the entire purpose for it. Obamacare is designed to collapse so they can backfill the vacuum with government run socialized medicine. Eventually, everyone will be on some form of Medicare.
