I wrote to my congressman here in Pennsylvania asking how HCR is going to help me with my specific situation. My premium through work is high, but I need it because my husband is self-employed. I received a response a few days later this morning and wanted to share with you all in case you were also curious (in the same situation).
"Two things will happen if your employer-provided coverage is deemed unaffordable (your insurance would be considered unaffordable if your premium payments total more than 9.5 percent of your income). First, you will allowed to opt out of your employer-sponsored coverage and will be provided with a “voucher” from your employer (equal to what your employer contributes to your employer-provided coverage) to purchase different coverage in the new health insurance Exchange. This Exchange will provide you with a far greater choice in plans, where you will hopefully be able to find a cheaper plan that meets your family’s needs. Second, if your family income is equal to or less than 400 percent of the federal poverty level, you will be eligible for tax credits to make your insurance more affordable. These credits would ensure that you pay more no more than 9.5 percent of your income on health coverage."
Currently at my employer, 20% of my pay is going to just health insurance, not including dental and vision.
For me and my specific situation, this is going to be a HUGE relief on us financially.
