EMR - the argument Obama used

Posted: Jan 11, 2013

In 2nd Look, Few Savings From Digital Health Records In part: The [2005] report predicted that widespread use of electronic records could save the United States health care system at least $81 billion a year, a figure RAND now says was overstated. The study was widely praised within the technology industry and helped persuade Congress and the Obama administration to authorize billions of dollars in federal stimulus money in 2009 to help hospitals and doctors pay for the installation of electronic records systems. The conversion to electronic health records has failed so far to produce the hoped-for savings in health care costs and has had mixed results, at best, in improving efficiency and patient care, according to a new [2012] analysis by the influential RAND Corporation. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/11/business/electronic-records-systems-have-not-reduced-health-costs-report-says.html?_r=1&;

I've been going to my dr. x 11 years. They recently switched to EMR. At my last visit they had me down as single (been married 20+ yrs.), family history of cancer (wrong), and being seen for my right knee (should have been left). The waiting line to reach the recepitionist was about 15 minutes, too.

I realize there's a learning curve involved but can see why EMR is not cost effective, nor safe.

same with VR, - but they still continue to use it

don't understand...if it don't work, why use it? Return software to the sales person and get a refund! Go back to using transcriptionists! (like that will ever happen, but a rosy thought).

So the EMR program entered all that misinformation - all by itself

[ In Reply To ..]
or did it have a little help from sleep-deprived, mush-mouth dictators and/or ESL scribes?

heaven forbid that the docs will now have to - take responsibility

[ In Reply To ..]
for what they point and click to these days, or actually have to learn a "program" in order to use it correctly....or hire a med student scribe to follow him around all day and get bored, not understand what the doc is saying or doing, and just click anywhere! oh my! blame placed where it is supposed to be?? novel idea! (sarcasm)

My doctors office recently went to EMR and the doctor said it has slowed her down so much that she is down from seeing 20-30 patients a day to 10-15. When she was filling out my PMH she did not know how to spell some of the words and I spelled them for her. She then asked if I wanted to type my own record so we were not sitting there forever. I laughed. She regrets letting her full time transcriptionist go over this. She said she now appreciates what she did for her. She hates EMR and the finished product looks like crap and very unprofessional. What should have been a 15-20 minute office visit turned out to be a 45 minute office visit because she can't type and talk to me at the same time and is lucky to type 5 words per minute, pecking with two fingers. I hope this blows up in their faces and then they push to get us back. There may be a silver lining after all.

They will. Funny how these reluctant providers have - had computerized BILLING for decades now. They

didn't have to be dragged kicking and screaming to spend money to make more money.

But fixing a terrible problem with patient care resulting in dreadful negligence, mistakes, and heaping of many, many thousands of dollars of unnecessary bills on their poor patients? Just listen to the noise.

As for saving money, many bought the cheapest systems available after waiting as long as possible and are not yet using them properly. As we all know.

Plus, by far most savings are supposed to come from increased efficiency of PROVIDING HEALTHCARE to the patients, including doing away with routinely soaking patients and insurance companies for services already rendered or not needed at all. If some are not exactly hurrying to cancel this source of additional profits, who in our community here is surprised?

My Argument With My InsuranceNov 11, 2009
The other day, I got a bill for an ambulance.  I got charged the entire $700+ dollars.  Don't get me wrong - those paramedics were fantastic.  I was having severe chest pain and within seconds, they had an IV inserted, my BP checked, nitro sprayed into my mouth and 1 mg of morphine plus some atrophine in my IV and a nasal cannula. However, I'm being billed the entire amount because the ambulance company is "out of network.".  This will not do.  I dealt with in ...

Obama's Manning Decision: Obama's Dangerous Move Reveals Scary Take On National SecurityJan 18, 2017
The commutation of Chelsea Manning’s prison term will forever be a blot on President Obama’s legacy. And now we’re paying the price. Now we’ve fallen behind the rest of the world. Now we’re forced to beg Saudi Arabi ...
