Car insurance

Posted: Apr 21, 2010

Anyone else out there with a son who is under 25 that has been added to your car insurance?  After dealing with our car insurance when our son got his driver's license, I was so aggravated that it cost more "because he is a boy".  I am sorry, but I just don't buy that line.  It is discrimination, plain and simple.  I know they can quote "facts" that boys have more accidents than girls, but that is simply lumping all boys together.  My son waited until he was 19 to get his license.  He is a careful driver.  Why not give them the same rates as girls and raise it if they have an accident.  It is so unfair just to assume because they are a boy they do not drive as carefully as a girl.

It's frustrating, but the insurance industry is all based around statistics - Happy MT Robin

That's what all rates in any type of insurance are based on - statistics. So, yes, while your son may have waited and may be a careful driver, the majority of young boys are not and the insurance industry has paid out billions in claims because of it. It's just the sad fact of life.

Insurance is based on Risk Assessment - It Is Not Discrimination

Nor is it unfair.

And no, I am not the parent of a girl driver, not an insurance agent, and am not biased toward girls or against boys.

Why doesn't your son get his own insurance?

The reason my son does not get his own insurance is he is a full-time college student studying music education which is a very time consuming field of study with a lot of his music classes requiring additional practice time.
Between that and the homework for his general ed classes, he has no time for a part-time or even a full-time job. Even if he did, most of his money would go just to pay his insurance. I am happy to help him out by paying for his car insurance as he is attending a private college soley on academic scholarships because of all of the hard work he has put in to make his dream of becoming a music teacher a reality. I just think it is unfair to group every boy in America into a higher insurance premium just because they are a boy.

It is much cheaper to add my son to my existing policy than for him to go out on his own, and he pays for my policy difference charges. And what about those insurance companies that run a credit report? My son does not have any credit to date.

I have worked in the insurance industry for going on 15 years as well as working as an MT for the past 5 yrs. While all states are different and all companies are different there are a few things that might help understand and lessen your frustration.

1. Insurance is zip code driven. They use a formula and calculate accidents per area.

2. Cars are rated with symbols. The higher the symbols (usually alpha driven when reaching numbers WOW beware!) So a car with an R is more than an L rating. This is based on replacement cost if involved in an accident.

3. Then yes sadly gender and age.

I know how frustrating that can be to parents and young drivers as well. IF you want to know in my 15 yrs of exp. I have handled more claims with girls than young men. The girls in the agency where I worked were more likely to get in accidents and were caught with drinking and driving as minors. NOT ALL OF THEM but I handled my fair share of them.

While the young men in the agency were more apt to get speeding charges.

In all I have seen I feel the young men and young woman should be rated equally. No differneces just because of gender.

I think all young drivers need to be cautioned about things and reminded often. NOT IN ANY SPECIAL ORDER.

1. NO TEXTING AND DRIVING.
2. NO CELL PHONES.
3. NO FRIENDS IN THE CAR.
4. ALWAYS BUCKLE UP.
5. NO DRINKING AND DRIVING.

My Argument With My InsuranceNov 11, 2009
The other day, I got a bill for an ambulance.  I got charged the entire $700+ dollars.  Don't get me wrong - those paramedics were fantastic.  I was having severe chest pain and within seconds, they had an IV inserted, my BP checked, nitro sprayed into my mouth and 1 mg of morphine plus some atrophine in my IV and a nasal cannula. However, I'm being billed the entire amount because the ambulance company is "out of network.".  This will not do.  I dealt with in ...

So My Insurance Won't Change?Oct 05, 2013
This morning I attended a meeting at the hospital where I work regarding our 2014 benefits.  Yes, I have insurance through my employer, and yes, I am happy with it, but imagine my surprise when I found out how much the cost of my coverage will increase for 2014 because we are self insured and our hospital was levied a fee of 1,000,000 dollars (yup, one million dollars) for fiscal 2014 to help fund the exchanges.  Of course, guess who pays that?  Yes, all of employees.  so tha ...

An MT Insurance Story...Jan 22, 2014
I had insurance through my MT job but never filed a claim as I am relatively healthy and never met the deductible.  I didn't have a colonoscopy until I was 55 or a mammogram until I was 56, my own fault, but my income had taken a nosedive and preventative care was the least of my worries.  I was just lucky that both turned out OK.  I lost my insurance when I was diagnosed with RA and couldn't maintain full time status or production, pretty close though.  Because of ...

What Small Car Owners Should Know About Car InsuranceApr 14, 2015
Americans are known around the world for their love of big cars. Many wouldn’t be caught dead behind the wheel of one of those little cars you’re more likely to see on the streets in Europe. But as gas prices continue to climb higher and more Americans become concerned with the environmental impact of larger, less fuel-efficient cars, small cars are starting to grow in popularity even here. What many haven’t considered is that smaller cars tend to have a lower safety rating. For example in ...
