Type of rolls/bread do you serve at Thanksgiving?

Posted: Nov 24, 2009

I prefer very soft rolls.  I like a certain type from the store that are just cheap little things but they are so good. (probably really bad for me but it's Thanksgiving after all).  I also like Costco's rolls, but the bag is so big.  I've made Pillsbury cresent rolls before but don't want to use the oven any more than I have to.

Do you make your own bisquits, do you use Pillsbury, frozen or just buy off the shelf?  Do you only serve one type?

I love to make loaves of "homemade" bread using frozen bread dough from the grocery store. It's always a hit, even over the rolls!

I used to make homemade yeast rolls every year, which everyone loved. One year I didn't have the time, so I bought the frozen instead. Everybody loved them just as much. Now I don't worry with the homemade.

I make them the day before Thanksgiving in throw-away aluminum pans, then cover them with foil and leave at room temperature; that way, I just have to put them back in the oven for about 5 to 10 minutes to heat them back up while the turkey is resting and I don't have to compete for oven time. A lot of times I have a buttered yeast roll instead of dessert. :)

What Type Of Bread Is Okay??Aug 19, 2012
Hi all, I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol. I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white ...

Ideas On What To Do With Leftover Hot Dog RollsMay 31, 2011
When we have hot dogs there are always buns left over.  Tried grilling them for toast.  Didn't taste so good.  Tried under the broiler and they burned.  Tried squooshing them and put them in the toaster, tasted like squooshed bread :-)  I hate to throw them out.  Any suggestions (besides get more hot dogs) :-) ...

Comcast Rolls Over For Hillary...Oct 09, 2015
hosted a $2,700-a-plate fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. On the first weekend in October, the NBC Universal in-kind contributions really kicked in: a star turn on "Saturday Night Live," a Sunday morning interview with Rev. Al Sharpton, and a Monday town hall meeting on the "Today" program. The Daily Beast was blunt in a headline: "'Saturday Night Live' Premiere Basically a Hillary Clinton Campaign Ad." Writer Kevin Fallon documented how the aid and comf ...

Putin Steam Rolls Over The Middle East While Obama Spouts Platitudes (sm)Oct 01, 2015
Meanwhile, “chanting ‘Death to America’ does not create jobs,” Obama continued, apparently unaware that no one who spends their time chanting “Death to America,” painting intricate murals of a skull-faced, razor-clawed Lady Liberty, or enthusiastically burning effigies actually cares about working their way up the career ladder. Now that I think about it, you know what else doesn’t create jobs? Bombing Syria! Quick, somebody tell Vladimir Putin. What on ...

What Whoopie And Anne Actually Said: Mormons CAN Serve In TheOct 23, 2012
Anne's version: a young man's mandatory mission for the LDS church when he graduates high school (girls stay home and prepare for marriage) is service to the country too, equal to the ones that bring other mothers' sonshome in body bags.  Given all Romney's war noise (he has hard-ons for powerful Russia, China, and Iran--no W-style schoolyard bullying of a little Iraq for him), the likelihood that he would be sending young men to war while his 5 sons stay home safe and ...

Soggy BreadApr 09, 2011
Anyone know how to prevent my bread from getting soggy in my lunch?  I pack a lunch in a regular insulated lunch bag, using an ice pack to keep my stuff cool.  It doesn't seem to matter what kind of sandwich I pack or whether or not I leave my sandwich unassembled, my bread is soggy when I take it out of the plastic bag.  If I don't put in a plastic bag, it gets dry.  Any suggestions? ...

Bread So Cheap At WalmartAug 19, 2010
Please someone telling me I am just being negative. I have started worrying about low prices at Walmart, because of hearing about their trade practices. Today I noticed the usual $2.78 loaf of multigrain bread that is my favorite, is reduced permanently to $2.50. I am wondering who is "taking the hit" for that 28-cent reduction. The bakery companies? Other local grocery stores usually have that bread for $3.50 or so, but often **on sale** at $2.50. Is Walmart's reduction an effort to s ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014
Years ago I loved to make bread and have several favorite recipes. I'm going to give up and get a bread maker.  I see they come with recipes, but I cannot tell if you can use your own recipes in them.  Does anyone have any experience with this.  One of my favorites is a receipe for Pioneer Bread which uses some corn meal.  It is not heavy like rye, which I understand does not work well in machines. Any advice on this would be appreciated.  I am becoming alarmed ab ...

Encouragement From Our Daily Bread...Sep 03, 2015

Well, she’s back.” The patient had been readmitted to the hospital and then died. This devast ...

ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
I know it's a little early but i'm a planner.  What do you usually do at Thanksgiving?  This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son.  In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day.  They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner.  My parents live 4 hours away and I'm not really too keen on just sitting around staring at eachother or the TV (as what happens with any other visit). Any id ...

ThanksgivingOct 31, 2012
I know it's a month away but can you all share with me your "normal" plans for Thanksgiving?  My parents live too far away so it will be just me and my 11 year old son by ourselves this year.  I want to make it special since this will also be his first Thanksgiving without his dad but cooking a huge turkey and the works seems like it will be a waste of food.  Suggestions/ideas? ...

So How Was Everybody's Thanksgiving?Dec 01, 2013
On Thanksgiving I cooked for my cats, then worked and ran out of work after 4 hours and watched TV and took PTO.  We got together the day after and I spent the day with my sister's family.  I can't believe how big my great-great-nieces and nephews are getting.  The oldest is 4, the youngest is just under 7 months.  I have a hard time believing how grown up everybody is and realizing we (my sister and I) aren't even the old ones anymore, the kids ...

Question About Little Bugs Flying Around BreadNov 15, 2010
Okay, last week I bought 2 sourdough rolls to make a little bowl to put some clam chowder in.  Got home and froze them in the bag they came in.  I took them out last night to thaw out and today I looked at the bag, which was still sealed shut (no holes in the bag anywhere), and I saw what looked like fruit flies (about 5 or 6 or so).  I took them out of the bag and put them on a plate and covered with saran wrap.   So here's my stupid question...are these sourdough rol ...

I know we often disagree on this board, but I hope that everyone -- liberal, conservative or in between -- has a wonderful, safe and happy Thanksgiving. If you're spending it with your relatives (as you might do every year and sometimes dread doing so), try to look at them in a new light and be grateful you still have your family. If you have no family, cook a meal and invite a neighbor or someone who also has no family to share your meal with you. It might wind up being your best Tha ...

Thanksgiving PrayerNov 26, 2009
