Buying potted herbs for Christmas gift

Posted: Nov 24, 2009

My hubby is really hard to buy for. He is the cook in the family and uses lots of herbs, usually buying them in the store in the vegetable section, not the dried variety. I was wondering if anyone has ever bought in the plant section and if so how do they do? I think he would love being able to do his own picking straight from a fresh herb.

That's a really good idea for hubby, or any cook. I've bought herbs from the garden store to plant outside - mostly different mints to use as ground cover - but have gotten lavender and thyme as well. You can also find herb starter/window sill packs that have the containers, seeds, etc. I've given that to my SIL before and she loved it.

Has Anyone Ever Had Parents Take Back A Christmas Gift?Feb 14, 2013
My husband and I do not get along with my stepdad.  He is greedy and just a terrible person.  Too much to go into.  We had words with him.  Anyways, he decided he would take back a Christmas gift that was from my mom and him last year.  It was an outside TV antenna.  He said it was his and he was taking it back.  I thought when you gave someone a gift it was theirs?  I just said ok whatever.   ...

Unique Christmas Gift IdeasDec 03, 2013
We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty o ...

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

Christmas Gift Cards For Friend's Kids And Great Nieces And NephewsNov 01, 2010
These children range in ages from newborn to 10.  Money is tight, but I always try to send them something just for them.  But as time has passed their numbers have increased.  How much is too little?  I was thinking in the range of 15-20?  Any input - I don't want to be too cheap - or should I just send a "family giftcard" for all?  These children are two for each family I usually send to. ...

Buying A Sexy LingerieDec 10, 2011
This was our conversation at a dinner last night. LOL The general concensus was that we ladies don't buy much anymore, not because we don't get use out of but because we have older kids. We'd have to change in our bedrooms and then not be able to come out until we change back into something more modest. kinda becomes a hassle. clothes we can only were in the bedroom and we can't come out for water in them. I don't wear robes around the house so I tend not to buy s ...

Going Away GiftJun 01, 2010
What do you give to someone as a going-away gift that you've only known for five months?  She's a very nice person.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together, mostly just at school functions, and a couple of times outside of that, for coffee, but with a group, not just her and me.  Is it even appropriate that I get her a little something?  I've been invited to a little going-away luncheon for her tomorrow and I don't have any idea.  Flowers m ...

Question About Buying Drugs OnlineJun 07, 2011
My 18 year old nephew was involved in a wreck and was hospitalized with a severely broken leg.  He will be okay, but his parents are very upset that he was loaded!  He was drinking and had drugs in his system.  He will have charges for property damage to a business also. They searched his room, found bottles of xanax, hydrocodone, vicodin, valium and such.  His dad checked the computer and found an account with one of those Canadian and Mexican "pharmacies".  He is in t ...

Worst Gift Ever?Dec 06, 2010
I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. We got margaritia glasses and neither us were old enough to drink either. I used those for dessert glasses for a bit but ended up over time breaking them. I can't think of any really really bad gifts but those 2 stick out in my mind for some reason. So what has been yours? ...

A Husband's GiftFeb 28, 2010
Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my husband purchased for me a week of personal training at the local health club. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. Friends seemed plea ...

Graduation GiftMay 16, 2013
Need help, don't want to give cold cash for college grad. It seems cards like AMEX, etc. have hidden fees when used. Also, what do you consider appropriate for a BS degree? Have several others coming up after this one and expect each higher degree should be a little more than the high school or junior college. Kind of stumped here, lots of different levels of graduation coming at once in the next 3-4 years. Just want to be fair. Thanks. ...

Need Help Salvaging A GiftDec 20, 2014
I had ordered 2 customized luggage tags from Zazzle.com.  The printed image is in between 2 pieces of acrylic.  Unfortunately, they mixed up the addresses on the backs of 2 of them and they have not gotten back to me yet.  If I do not hear from them Monday, I will be contacting my credit card company about the charges. What I am curious about is how to go about separating the acrylic, switching out the wrong information and then getting it to adhere together again.  Does any ...

More Dads Buy the Toys, So Barbie, and Stores, Get Makeovers By STEPHANIE CLIFFORD " Barbies are for girls and construction sets are for boys. Or are they? For the first time in Barbie’s more than 50-year history, Mattel is introducing a Barbie construction set that underscores a huge shift in the marketplace. Article On Buying Primary Care Doctors Jul 26, 2015
Here's an article about profiteers trying to buy doctor groups to "get control of their patient base and leverage those patients." Ten-year Anniversary Gift Nov 11, 2009
In December, my significant other (BF sounds so young) and I will have been together 10 years.  We are both 51 and basically get anything we want when we want it.  He is not the type to wear jewelry except his college ring and a watch (which I got him 5 years ago) and he has anything and everything for his favorite college team.  I was thinking about doing a collage of pictures from the trips we have taken in our 10 years together in a nice picture frame, but not sure.  He is ...

Holiday Gift GivingNov 08, 2011
ONE GREAT IDEA!!! Christmas & Chanukah 2011 -- Birth of a New TraditionAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at giftgiving time, nothing can be found that is produced by A ...

Charity Donation As GiftNov 21, 2012

White Elephant Gift ExchangeDec 09, 2011
We are invited to a white elephant party this weekend. Have never gone to one before. I did a search and it seems like people like to do funny gifts. I'm not that clever and my husband suggested we give a wine rack (wood top and bottom with black metal center - holds nine bottles) that we were going to send to Goodwill. At a party last weekend the host told us that last year one of the single guys (first timer) gave an expensive painting. So they were joking that the person who g ...
