Need appetizer ideas for a Christmas eve finger food party.

Posted: Dec 14, 2011

My family all gather at my mom's house on Christmas eve to open presents and we all bring finger foods or appetizers and sweets.  I need some new ideas.  I always like to try new recipes, but I'm having some sort of mental block this year.  I can't think of anything that sounds good.  Not to mention I've been invited to a friend's annual Christmas party this weekend and she always asks me to bring the same old macaroni salad I always bring and I want to do something different.  At my friend's party she serves turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, etc. and everyone brings a covered dish or something to that effect.

Maybe I'm just being a scrooge, but I'm having trouble getting into the spirit of things and can't think of anything I want to cook. HELP!

simple snack food - BLT dip

[ In Reply To ..]
1 cup mayo
1 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup chopped tomatoes
6 slices of microwave bacon crumbled
green onions to taste

Mix all together, eat with veggie crackers.

Super yummy.

Smoked salmon recipe - oaf

[ In Reply To ..]
Did this for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. Take plain crackers and put on a little cream cheese with chives (you can get the cheap stuff from Wal-Mart which is what I used) then put very thinly sliced smoked salmon on it. You can add dill if you like. I've done cheese and veg/fruit platters with crackers on the side (you can do this ahead of time). A neighbor bought cheesey scalloped potatoes which were good or make augraten potatoes. Check on line for additives to your pasta salad to make it different this year. Good Luck!

A couple of ideas... Sm - Old Woman

Bar-B-Q meatballs (Crockpot)
1 bag frozen meatballs
1 jar jelly, grape or apple work best
1 jar bar-b-q sauce, store brand is fine

Put meatballs in crock pot. Mix together equal parts jelly and BBQ sauce with a whisk until most of the lumps are gone. Pour over meatballs and cook all day on low. Stir occasionally to make sure meatballs are coated well.

Crab dip
1 package cream cheese, softened
1 bottle shrimp cocktail sauce
1 can shrimp
Parsley, either dried or finely chopped fresh.

Spread cream cheese on a plate or platter (I just use a dinner plate) to abut an inch from the edge. Spread cocktail sauce over that, leaving about an inch of the cream cheese showing. Drain shrimp well and pick for any tiny pieces of shell. Layer this over the cocktail sauce, leaving about an inch or less of the cocktail sauce showing. Sprinkle the top with the parsley flakes. Serve with crackers.

super easy mini frattatas - yumyum

My usual batch is for 6 eggs, you can cut it in half, or double if need be:

Mix in a bowl 6 eggs and 1/4 cup cream (half & half or regular milk is fine) and then add whatever you like.

I love it Denver omelet style with chopped Canadian bacon, shredded Mexican cheese blend, diced green peppers and shallots.

or use prosciutto and small pasta (like ditalini) with shredded Italian cheese blend, diced green onions and maybe some chopped parsley if you like.

Salt and pepper to taste. Spray nonstick mini muffin tins and scoop mixture to fill 3/4 full. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes give or take. You can serve them warm, room temp or chilled. Very convenient and very tasty.

We're making shrimp cocktail, pineapple wrapped in bacon, stuffed mushrooms (with a bread stuffing), homemade calzones, a cheese and pepperoni platter, homemade Chex mix that I make every year, a fresh fruit platter, and homemade cookies.

I love that... - no big dinner or mess

I do that too! I also buy a big ham, chop into bun-sized pieces, throw in crock pot in layers; ham, sprinke brown sugar and drizzle honey, repeat.

Noney, here are 2 that we make every year and - everyone seems to love.

Crabmeat Meltaways
6 oz of crabmeat
8 T butter or margarine
5 oz jar of sharp processed cheese spread
1 T mayonnaise
1/4 tsp Worchester sauce
dash garlic salt
1 pkg English muffins

Mix everything together and then fold in the crabmeat last. Spread on split English muffins (no need to toast beforehand)and bake on cookie sheet in oven at 375 until bubbly and bottoms are a little crispy. Then cut each muffin into 4 little appetizer pieces with a pizza cutter. People rave about these!

Veggie Pizza
2 8-oz crescent rolls
1/4 cup mayo
3/4 to 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 8-oz pkgs cream cheese
1 1-oz ranch dip
veggies of choice....chopped broccoli, red pepper, shredded carrots, whatevs....

Spread the crescent rolls on cookie sheet and press seams together and bake at 350 until very lightly golden. Cool and spread with cream cheese mixed with ranch and mayo. Then top with chopped veges and cheddar cheese mix and press down. Chill in fridge and then cut into squares. The red and green of the peppers and broccoli is really pretty and festive. You can also use chopped olives, scallions, whatever you like. People seem to really love these too!

pumpernickle or rye loaf with port wine cheddar spread. I have used both real crab meat and the artificial and both are equally as good.

Yes, it is the Old English spread in those little - jars, and I do use real

crabmeat. These are really so easy....you can assemble ahead and pop into a hot oven whenever you're ready :)

weenies - ...

[ In Reply To ..]
I am actually making these for my husband's carry-in at work today and people either love them or hate them.

I use 5-6 packages of little weenies (I use sausage), one can of beer, and one small bottle of hot sauce. I put them in the crockpot and let them cook for a few hours (the longer they cook, the spicier they get). Very simple and we love them.

An old go to recipe from my mom that I have not had in years - cindy

but is something different and was always gobbled up:

Cheese surprises

2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup butter
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. salt
1 jar of green olives

Mix all the ingredients except the olives, to form dough. Form little flat dough circles. Place olives in the center and form a ball. Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes.

If dough is too sticky, add a little more butter.

These are great, they look like little baked balls of cheese dough but have an olive inside. Great appetizers

Also great recipe that I make all the time is Jello Fruit Salad.

I pkg of jello
1/2 cup boiling water
8 oz of cream cheese
1 small can crushed pineapple with juice
1 T. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
6 oz 7-up

Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Put all ingredients in blender and buzz. Pour in mild and refridge until firm.

If you are using a "tupperware" brand jellow mold, you double the recipe and that is when I get creative and use two different flavors of jello. At Christmas I use lime and cherry to make red and green. Also, I am diabetic, so you can use the sugar free jello, Splenda and diet 7-up and it is sugar free and no one every knows that there is no sugar in it, is great!

Enjoy your holiday

This one is really easy.

Finely chop green onions, including tops. Mix into whipped cream cheese, if you buy it whipped it is faster.

Take individual slices of deli thin sliced lunch meat, I usually do three or four kinds. Spread a layer of cream cheese on the meat and roll up.

Place on a tray in a wheel configuration.

Need Some Help With 12 Days Of Christmas IdeasDec 17, 2011
My husband lost his job in June and was out of work until October when he started working as a relief driver for a company delivering bread then in November was laid off.  We have had a very hard year and now that Christmas is here he is still out of work and still no word from unemployment, so we are living on my salary just scraping by.  Each of the boys are getting one gift but we are not buying anything for each other.  I am making him a '12 Days of Christmas Coupon Book& ...

Unique Christmas Gift IdeasDec 03, 2013
We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty o ...

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

Sore Pinky FingerSep 29, 2010
Anyone else ever have trouble with their pinky finger getting really sore? My pinky finger has been really sore lately. A couple of weeks ago it got all swollen and turned blue.  I didn't injure it at all.  I went to the doctor and she said I had broken a blood vessel and put a splint on it for a few days.  She insisted that I must have injured it and forgot, but I know I didn't (I think I would have bigger problems if that were the case.)  It got better after I was ...

Share Finger FoodsNov 14, 2015
Holidays are coming. Here are some of my favorite, easy-to-make finger foods. No utensils needed by the "eatee," LOL. Probably can even get away with just a cocktail napkin instead of a plate Roll-ups: Get plain or flavored soft tortillas. Spread a little mustard on it, then place a piece of ham (or turkey), lettuce and cheese--I use Swiss or Provolone--and roll up and cut into pinwheels. I put the lettuce in between the cold cuts and the cheese. It makes them less slippery and messy. These a ...

Minor Question - Finger ArthritisDec 19, 2016
In the grand scheme of things this is a very paltry question, but it's new to me, so would like to hear about any tips or fixes. I'm in my 60s but have never had arthritis, no pains anywhere, even with doing MT for 30 years. I do have the Heberden's nodes on a couple fingers, but again, no pain associated with them.  But one night 2 weeks ago, I got off work and realized my left ring finger was swollen and stiff at the PIP joint. The Tea Party (disgusting And Full Of Vitrole And Hatred) Are Not The Republican Party HopefullyApr 17, 2011
I hope with everything I have in me that the Tea Party does not represent the Republican Party. This is what the Tea Party stands for. They are full of vitriole and hatred. This is not what the Republican party stands for.
