Inexpensive prescription sleeping pill?

Posted: Nov 2, 2009

What is an inexpensive prescription sleeping medication (for middle-of-the-night awakening) that might be on Walmart's or Walgreen's $4-a-month list? I have been using the generic OTC form of Unisom, similar to Benadryl, but would like to get my doc to write a prescription for an INEXPENSIVE sleeping medication. TIA- Mary

actually looking at Walmart's $4 prescription list to find what you are looking for? It is readily available on-line.

I did, am assuming it's under Mental health - Mary

category; but I don't know which of those medications are sleep aids, and am so busy with 2 MT jobs that I have not looked each medication under "Mental Health" up to see if it's a sleep aid.

Insomnia now a mental illness? - anon

I was unaware that having insomnia or a sleep disturbance constituted mental illness. Practically everyone I know has a sleep disturbance issue but I don't think that qualifies every one of them as "mentally ill." A lot of the benzodiazepines are used to aid in sleep disturbance because drowsiness is a common side effect of those medications, even though they were designed to treat anxiety and other mood disorders. And sometimes anxiety and depression can lead to sleeplessness. You should talk to your doctor to find out the cause of your sleep disorder and tell him/her that you would prefer to try something cheap and generic. Alprazolam (Xanax) is very cheap and so is Valium. Trazodone, Tranxene, and probably Ativan as well. I personally cannot shut my brain off and require alprazolam at night just to fall asleep. My spouse uses it as well but still wakes up at 3 a.m. unable to go back to sleep. I think he would be better off with a controlled release medication like Ambien CR, or maybe even Xanax controlled release, but I'm no doctor. In his case he does have anxiety (from work) but he's in no way mentally ill. I have checked the Walmart generic list and could not find any alprazolam on there but I know at Walgreen's it's still super cheap. And also other pharmacies are offering $4 generic medications but the list is very limited. Check with Walgreen's, CVS, Costco, Sam's, etcetera. Good luck. But first of all talk to your doctor.

I just read every med. under $4 Walmart list, - Mary

and the Mental Heath category has mostly drugs for schizophrenia, Parkinson's, depression, etc... A bit extreme for me. The only one on there that might be a possibility is Trazodone. I was hoping to get a sleeping aid. Any ideas for an inexpensive prescription drug for a sleeping aid? TIA

It sounds like a trite answer, but it's really not. Many times the docs know which drugs are less expensive than others. Also, (I know at least for the psychiatrist I work for) he had samples that he gave out an awful lot. He doesn't have access to those any more, but most docs have access to a lot of samples. Chances are your doc could supply you with some.
thanks - good point- - Mary

I just hate to pay a lot when there are probably inexpensive ones out there.

Trazodone works very well for me. (sm) - Nikki

My doctor just gave me a new prescription for 150 mg with 11 refills. The reason for the 150 mg is so I can cut them in half, so they last even longer, so you might want to try that. If it doesn't work, then you can try a whole tablet. Hope this helps.

supplement that is all natural and non-habit forming. I take it 20 minutes before bed and it works wonders. I am a lifelong insomniac going back to childhood, and it gives me great rest without a hangover like some meds. It is about $14.95 at Walmart, but well worth the price. I can even take 1/2 pill to make them last longer, and is still effective. Hope this helps!

Have you tried melatonin? It is available in any health food or drug store and is often BOGO at chains like Rite Aid and CVS Even at full price it is generally less than $10.

International pilots often use it to "reset their clocks" without the hangover.

My elderly mother's physician also recommended it due to lack of confusion etc.

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...
