$$$ is tight this year. Any Christmas ideas to make it go further?

Posted: Nov 19, 2009

I get together with a group of friends annually around the holidays.  We got tired of trading our own baked goods so we decided to trade names this year with a $$ limit.  Still doing the baking for other friends and neighbors (cookies, fudge, bread).

Does anyone have any other creative ideas on how to stretch the $$$ during the holidays, recipes, drinks, gifts?

Most never use the whole bag of fresh cranberries. I use half the bag.

Fill a decorative bowl 3/4 with water, put the other half bag of cranberries in the water to float with 2-3 little floating candles. Very pretty.

Christmas exchange idea - truffle

We have always drawn names at Thanksgiving for the Christmas exchange since my extended family is so large; that way, everybody only has to buy 1 gift. Last year we shook it up a bit and didn't draw names, but instead had an ornament exchange. It was so much fun! When it was each person's turn to open, they had an option of choosing a gift from the pile or stealing from a person who had already opened their ornament (only 1 steal per round). My nieces who didn't know they were coming until late notice also wanted to participate, so they each made an ornament. Pretty cheap and a whole lot of fun!

One thing for women is to make scented bath crystals. I got the recipe from Heloise. You mix Epsom salts, fragrance, food coloring and glycering. Check her web site. I'm sure she has the recipe there.

Put salts in mason jars and tie pretty ribbons around them.

I love this idea!!! - Silly Girl

Our dinner is not necessarily pot luck but - sm

I have cousins, nieces, nephews, siblings, daughters, and parents come for a big dinner. When some asks, "Can I bring something," I take them up on it. I try to assign someone to bring drinks, alcohol, tea, etc. I ask someone to bring the bread, a salad of some sort, any dish they "specialize" in, and of course a cake, pie, etc. You would be surprised at how far this help can go in cutting on the food budget.

Our family dinners are always pot luck since we have - kj

a large family. The one who is having dinner at her house usually does the meat and we all bring a dish or two which she coordinates so we all don't bring the same thing. We have done this for 40 years, ever since I was a kid.

Joanns - gifts

I saw on the Black Friday ad that Walmart will have 2-qt crockpots for $4. I have a few people I'm not sure what to get and thought it would be a great idea to get them one of these with a couple of packets of dip mix and a wire whisk. Tie it up with celofane (sp?) Christmas paper and ribbon. Total about $8 each.

One year, I bought wreaths at a craft store and decorated them with pine cones and other decorations and gave those. Total about $7 each.

Every year for the grandparents, I frame the kids' school pictures. You can usually pick up nice frames at the Dollar Store for a good price and have my kids write a message on the back. $2 each for the frames (pics are about $30 each :(

For the kids' teachers last year and again this year, I'm making peanut butter choco dipped pretzel sticks. I give them each 4 and wrap them in Christmas celofane and put them in a cute mug tied up with ribbon. Mugs are $2 each and pretzels only cost $5 total to make about 25.

My best one for this year -- I'm using the reward points on my credit card to get my gift exchange people gift cards. I've racked up a lot of points between building our house and my direct sales business to get 3 or 4 nice ones. I aldo got one for myself for one of the places we eat out at a lot.

everyone has been telling me that everywhere!!! - and it is true

I don't even know how I am going to keep my house this Christmas! My sister sent me a $75 gift card to WalMart for the family so I went ahead and bought a couple things (god bless her!) I have been going over the black friday ads on theblackfriday.com and Walmart's came out... not too impressed but it's okay. This year I am going to make gourmet snacks and put them in a tin from the dollar store for my inlaws and parents. I grew up learning a materialistic Xmas so I am prewired to feel guilty if I don't buy buy buy, but this year I actually really can't... oh well just something I have to deal with! I am trying to teach my kids about the spirit of Xmas instead of just GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE like all of my younger Xmases.

Need Some Help With 12 Days Of Christmas IdeasDec 17, 2011
My husband lost his job in June and was out of work until October when he started working as a relief driver for a company delivering bread then in November was laid off.  We have had a very hard year and now that Christmas is here he is still out of work and still no word from unemployment, so we are living on my salary just scraping by.  Each of the boys are getting one gift but we are not buying anything for each other.  I am making him a '12 Days of Christmas Coupon Book& ...

Unique Christmas Gift IdeasDec 03, 2013
We all could use some unique gift ideas. If you have a special person that loves gourmet food and unique kitchen gifts, La Tienda (tienda.com) is a great idea. NO, I have no affiliation, but we have special friends who love gourmet food and such. The place isn't cheap, so it is not something we do every day, but we do buy from them every Christmas. The food is delicious--Spanish cuisine--as in Spain, Spain over in Europe. A lot of it does not have to be cold-packed, so there's plenty o ...

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

Need Appetizer Ideas For A Christmas Eve Finger Food Party.Dec 14, 2011
My family all gather at my mom's house on Christmas eve to open presents and we all bring finger foods or appetizers and sweets.  I need some new ideas.  I always like to try new recipes, but I'm having some sort of mental block this year.  I can't think of anything that sounds good.  Not to mention I've been invited to a friend's annual Christmas party this weekend and she always asks me to bring the same old macaroni salad I always bring and I ...

Ideas For Christmas "Goody Bags" For AdultsDec 13, 2015
We will be attending a small Christmas party where there is some expectation of bringing a small gift for everyone.  We usually know about half the people there.  I have done some small generic gifts of pancake "mixes" with maple syrups, hand lotions/organic soaps, home baked goodies/candy, etc.   Anyone have any inexpensive ideas?  Ideas for making the bags?   Christmas is just around the corner! ...

Knee Swollen, Tight, PainfulOct 18, 2009
Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to g ...

Tight Budgets Lead To More Civilians Used For PolicingOct 12, 2010
Police agencies across the country are recruiting thousands of civilians for a growing number of duties previously performed by uniformed cops, in an unusual concession to local budget cuts. The positions — some paid and others volunteer — are transforming every-day citizens into crime-scene investigators, evidence gatherers and photographers in what some analysts suggest is a striking new trend in American policing. "It's all being driven by the economy and we should ex ...

2-year-old Kentucky Girl Accidentally Killed By Her 5-year-old Brother May 01, 2013
"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home. ...

So.....What's On Your Christmas Table? SmDec 12, 2011
Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two. Texas Pecan Cake (courtesy of my mom) makes a regular appearance on our table.  We don't like fruitcake in our house, but this is the Texas version, chock full of pecans and raisins.  Peanut Butter Balls, also known as Buckeyes, are ...

The Christmas FruitcakeDec 08, 2011
I say there are two kinds of people in this world, those who like fruitcake and those who don't; my son tells me I am wrong, there are three kinds of people in this world, those who are good at math and those who are not. I like fruitcake, I admit it, I'm not ashamed to say so -- so last night I bought a little itty-bitty $3.99 fruitcake to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas with a cup of herbal tea and a small slice after I finish work.  My son, on the other hand, says "Ug ...

Christmas GiftsDec 02, 2011
Need advice. In-laws And Christmas.Oct 24, 2011

Christmas ServiceDec 25, 2013
I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Well the main hymn, anthem or whatever was the Halleuia (?) chorus from Handel's messiah ...

Baking Christmas Gifts...Oct 19, 2009
At my husband's family get together last weekend, I realized that my husband's family is just too huge to keep buying individual Christmas presents (15 adults and 5 kids, not counting his dad and my parents) plus our 3 kids so I've decided to get nice containers like a hatbox and fill it with baked goods, spiced pecans and jar mixes for each family. So my questions are: What jar mixes do you like to give/receive? What baked goods do you like to give/receive? TIA ...

Christmas Gatherings, How Would You Feel?Dec 16, 2009
Every year since my 2000 wedding have spent Christmas Day with hubs family (have daughter by another marriage, grown and out of the home). My SIL (hubby's brother's wife) and I have exchanged the dinners since the other participants really too old (70s and 80s) to host everyone, quite an ordeal to arrange for say about 15 people. I hosted dinner in 2007 and asked last year by SIL to host again and she would do this year. Have heard nothing about dinner until yesterday (10 days prior to ...
