Good city to relocate to along with inexpensive apartments

Posted: Sep 11, 2013

Any feedback on a new place to live that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  I find myself newly separated and wanting a fresh start somewhere but doing MT work I can't afford a whole lot, but would like to relocate to a new place and get a nice apartment.  Am open to moving anywhere really.  Will appreciate any feedback

Huff Post has a list of 10 most affordable cities to live. Most house prices are under 75,000 so I would imagine rents would be low too.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the rents. Fort Worth is a nice place to live. Don't go to Dallas. Come to Fort Worth!

I just take things one day at a time. Applied for some jobs today that might be tolerable. Besides sending out poems and thinking about an art exhibit, and applying to art school. Yeah, "I'm too old." I don't care.

I am staying where I am for a few months; blessed to have an elderly mom that likes my company and has allowed me to stay with her while I am able to get back on my feet. I enjoy who I work for but don't make loads of money. I am also applying for some part time work to help me get my act together faster

If you are new but old and over 55 try to find a place that takes 55 plus because your rent will probably be cheaper. I live in Parma, Ohio at Parma Park Apartments, swimming pool, and cheap rent. Nice area, stores within walking distance too. Look it up on Google. : )

If you are over 62 or disabled, you might quality for a HUD-subsidized apartment. Not sure if this applies to you, but if so, it can really be a help. I have a friend who is severely diabetic, so she qualifies under disability, and her rent is partially paid by the program. It helps her a lot. Good luck and God bless you.

Not yet, but thanks - new but old

How about Jacksonville, Florida - Me

[ In Reply To ..]
Cheap place on Mayport Road in Jacksonville, Florida, very close to Atlantic Beach, maybe 5 minutes away. I used to live there but had to move back home again. The apartments are big for a one bedroom, big living room, bedroom in the back. Privately owned by very nice people, first, last and security. I loved it cause I went to the beach every chance I got.

Oklahoma is not expensive, nor is Utah (if you can stand the extreme high desert cold). Louisiana and Mississippi are quite affordable. Good luck to you.

just a thought. It is purportedly one of the cheapest areas to live. Texas, however, has no state taxes. We do.

Arizona has small towns way out in the desert, where a trailer or double-wide would be very reasonable to rent. And I found Arizona extremely beautiful. Almost every sunset will have you catching your breath. I found the monsoon season invigorating. Things turned green all at once, and ponds appeared with frogs croaking. I fed the birds, and all kinds showed up for their birdseed--- many, many different kinds. This is making me homesick for Arizona now.

I've lived in many many places - 28 different places within a 40 year time frame.

I think you need to decide what is important to you, which looks like you're pretty open to a lot of stuff.

Here's some things I've learned from different places I've lived.

New England - My absolute favorite having been born and raised there. Don't live there anymore, now live on the other side of the country with my husband, but it holds a dear place in my heart. But weather is a big issue back there. Muggy summers and dad said the snow storms are many. Last winter he said there was a snow storm almost every day for a month or two. But if you like the snow and don't mind getting stuck indoors sometimes it's absolutely beautiful and a lot to do.

South Carolina - Hot, hot hot in summers.

Florida - Hot and muggy.

Colorado Springs - Blek! Hated it. Not much to do.

Las Vegas - Too hot, too crowded, too expensive.

Reno - Too expensive, depressed economy, most of my friends are out of work and losing their homes.

Mohave Desert - Blek, blek, blek. The desert, need I say more. :-) Hot and nothing to do. Most all radio stations are all country and western. The others are religious stations or sports stations. Not one rock-n-roll or classic.

Monterey,CA - Absolutely beautiful. Lots of things to do, but it's expensive.

San Francisco bay area - Hell on earth. Expensive (as in over $1000 for a 1 bedroom piece of garbage apartment). Can't do anything without someone on your back. Can't even stand in a grocery store looking at an item without tons of people wanting to look in the same space as you at the exact moment as you. Many rude people too. Many friends out of work there.

Washington State (close to Canada border). Beautiful reasonable prices, but at times felt like I was at the end of the earth.

Washington State (around the Seattle area). Beautiful. Lots to do. Prices are a bit more expensive. Lots of grungers.

Southern Oregon - DON'T GO!!! Crime is bad (and I mean bad). Druggies voted against an increase in taxes for emergency services. Now there is no police, no fire, no nothing. People living in the streets. Crime rampant. People not safe there. Thank God we moved in time.

Salem Oregon - Heaven on earth. Love it, love it, love it. Apartments very reasonable. Maybe 500 or 600 for a 1 bedroom. Weather is perfect. Doesn't rain as much as everyone said it did. Summers beautiful, winters are mild. Lots to do, prices for groceries probably about the same around as other places.

In amongst all the places (states) we've lived we've moved 8 or 9 times to different apartments and such.

Now in Oregon and I never want to leave. We've got a great governor too. He's a democrat and I'm not, but I feel he is doing a great job and one of the few people in politics I feel truly cares about the people of his state.

Loved your post! - Best info is from someone who's been there

Appreciated your comments especially about the prices of apartments.

Loved Oregon - new but old

[ In Reply To ..]
I have only been through Oregon as we lived outside Seattle and went down to San Francisco several times where we eventually relocated to due to my husband being in Navy. I always thought Oregon was gorgeous. I liked also being outside Seattle too. I actually loved where we lived in California and I would have loved to have stayed there but could not afford the cost of living. I like cold weather, but have never lived where there is snow and don't know how I would feel about it.

I have traveled to many places but Oregon - Karlie

is the prettiest state I have ever seen. With the exception of about 4 states have seen all the states. I heard of other states and people saying how pretty but Oregan is really beautiful.

Ahh... - sounds like Heaven

[ In Reply To ..]
I was all set to pack up and move to Salem, Oregon, after your beautiful description. But then I Googled Salem Oregon climate and saw that the average high in summer is 61. That's a little too cool for me. Do you think that's accurate?

North Dakota - NDMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I love this state. It is really safe with very little crime to speak of. Murder is extremely rare and very little property crime as people look out for one another. The smaller towns are super reasonable in terms of rent, etc., but the larger cities unfortunately are becoming more expensive. The western part of the state is experiencing an oil boom with tons of money and all of the attendant problems that go with it, so that's to be avoided.

Chattanooga/N Georgia - on my way out of MT

Great weather, so much to do, activities all year round (many of them free). I have found the cost of living here pretty darn good compared to the Gulf Coast, where I relocated from.

Handcrafted, Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas. Dec 01, 2014
Hi everyone! I have been working on some inexpensive Christmas gift ideas and wanted to see what everyone else might have to share. Here are a few: 1. Keep or find clean, empty baby food jars. Using hot glue, attach a cute, tiny figurine to the lid. Then fill the empty jar partially with cheap oil, glutter, and water. Glue the lid to the jar. Turn it upside down and you have a snow globe! 2. Gather those really giant huge acorns, take them home and shine them. Cut out a cardboard wreath. U ...

In his address to the issue he referred to the subject of police and the black population by describing how he has to warn his own son, that while the police are to be respected and they are thankful for them, but specifically as a black youth, he has to be extra careful, moreso than a white teen.  This guy is way beyond Gov Nixon's level, but I suppose the Mayor of New York City should be.   Then he repeated the speech in Spanish.  Good for him.  I hope they keep it u ...

Toronto Man Builds Steps For $550 That City Said WouldJul 23, 2017
Oh Canada. The City of Toronto estimated the cost of new steps would range between $65,000-$150,000. Like everything else, the city also dragged their feet in getting the work done.
