Why do people get into this pageant crap

**Edit: My question is why do parents get into this and then beg for money from the community. I'm NOT asking opinions about pageants.
This kind of foolishness costs money, I know that. People want their kid to be miss whatever of the county, but they dont want to pay for expensive clothes, culture lessons and whatever other kind of crap to make sure their kid wins??
You want this silly fake image for your kid but you're not willing to dish out as much money as it takes, so you beg the community for sponsors = $$$.

I never thought about how they're funded, but dolling up your kid and having them prance around is abusive, if you ask me. Let them be kids. [ In Reply To ..]I refused to do a lot of the things they wanted. She still won multiple pageants. She decided she was done so we were done. As far as the soliciting (which I wholeheartedly do NOT agree with), is this any worse than than the baseball/softball teams (in my area it is predominant) wanting people to donate $$ to go to take the team to state, regional, whatever. Again, parents sign them up.... parents better be ready to pay for it.

Pageants are designed to make a kid self-absorbed, look at me, I'm beautiful. The younger the parents start them then keep them in there, the more the kid becomes defined by how she looks rather than who she really is.

[ In Reply To ..]I hate being accosted when I go in or out of a store by some strange kid begging me for money and that's what it boils down to, regardless of what it's for. I paid for my kid's extra-curricular activities and/or she actually worked for it by washing cars, working in a fund-raising store set up by her school, doing chores, etc. Now, it seems like fund raising is mostly teaching kids how to beg money from strangers.

If Honey Boo-Boo and her family had an ounce of class in their body I might be able to understand a little, but how in the world did she get into pageants for one and for two get her own TV show. The whole family is about as classless as they come yet Honey Boo-Boo has won numerous pageants. I just don't get it.
