Elementary School Kids Can Get Condoms

Posted: Jun 29, 2010

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) — A new policy in a Massachusetts public school district that makes condoms available to all students, even those in elementary school, is drawing criticism from some who say it goes too far.

Provincetown School Board Chairman Peter Grosso says because there is no set age when sexual activity starts, the committee decided not to set an age for condom availability.

Under the policy, any student requesting a condom from a school nurse must first receive counseling, which includes information on abstinence. The policy does not require the school to contact parents.

The policy was approved by Provincetown's school committee June 10. It takes effect in the fall.

Kris Mineau, president of the conservative Massachusetts Family Institute, calls the idea absurd.

has no business handing out condoms to any student. There's no set age when drinking, smoking, doing drugs starts either, so why not hand those things out at school, too. I know I just set myself up to be flamed, but all I can say is flame away.

I hear what you're saying, but the school system did not ask to be put into this role. Morals have changed over the past few decades - basically there are none. People do drugs, drink too much alcohol, use profanity, and engage in sex and other behaviors inappropriately in front of children, either their own and/or the neighbors' kids, nieces, nephews, etc. Look at the kids' sports events than turn into brawls between adults - this never happened when I was a kid and it would have been unheard of.
The churches and our government used to have the respect of the trust of the people and we all tried to live civilly and there was an understanding of proper public behavior. That doesn't exist any more.
Also, kids are exposed to sex from infancy in the language used by adults around them. For instance, I cringe when I hear adults talk about infants "flirting" with people when they are interacting and making eye contact. Some idiots even claim their kids' friends are their "boyfriend" or girlfriend" when the kids are just playing together. Then there is all the messages in movies, TV and advertising. Even 3 year olds know that buying a certain product will make you more appealing and others will want to come to your parties and sleepover at your house. There are studies to document this - one came out about 2 weeks ago.
If the school is going to give condoms to kids, they can't set an age limit because it would open them to a lawsuit for age discrimination. Middle schoolers and even younger kids, 8 and 9 years old, are now engaging in Bill-Monica sexual activity. Girls are making out with each other in front of boys for the boys' pleasure - they have been brain washed as young as grade school that they have to behave like a prostitute to attact boys. The boys apparently have learned to have no respect for females. THis happens everywhere, including small rural areas - it is not restricted to large urban areas. So don't think you're safe if you live 25 miles from the nearest town.
As a former teacher, I know parents don't believe their kid is involved - but chances are they are. Parents are living in fantasyland if they think their kid is telling them everything. They lie!!!! parents are at the bottom of the totem pole for middle schoolers and early high schoolers - their peers are their prime motivators.

You're right. It happens in rural areas. That's where I live. - wannie

Both my children are grown now, but I still would not have wanted the school handing out condoms to my kids any more than I would have wanted them to give them drugs, alcohol, etc. That is NOT the school's place. I know kids are gonna have sex, but the school handing out condoms is not the solution.
Here's the thing... - Nobody is saying it is a solution...

But it can stop them from becoming pregnant/contracting a disease if and until a solution is put into place. This isn't about changing any behavior, just keeping kids as safe as they possibly can while they are engaging in dangerous behavior. Nobody argues that they shouldn't be doing it in the first place! But if keeping them alive/out of trouble is all we've got, I'll take it!
Moved to a rural area from an urban one three years ago. - Culture shock

I'm 51, and here I am an anomaly because I have three grown children but no grandchildren. Some of my contemporaries actually went to their grandchildren's high school graduation this year. And I've never seen as much alcohol consumed on a regular basis as I have since I moved here to the midwest. A 12-pack a day is considered low to moderate at best, and parents don't think twice about supplying a keg for their kids' weekend get-togethers and think nothing of sitting around getting drunk and high with their kids (and think nothing of hopping in their cars to DUI over to the next guy's house).

I'm not really an intellectual snob, but the reality of today's world is that it is going to take more than squeaking through high school or getting a GED to get ahead now, and getting pregnant at 15 and 16 is not going to make it any easier. So if a bowl of condoms sits there like a dish of mints, if that's what it takes to make sure they give themselves at least a chance at a future, I'm okay with that.

No way! - sm

IMO that is ridiculous in the grade schools. I know the problem does exist in grade school, but I believe it is up to the parents to make that choice for their children.

Not to mention the school not notifying the parents that their child requested a condom is absurd.

actually might be necessary - TNW

I have a 13yo sister who is now in 8th grade, but in when she was 10 one of her friends had already had sex. This is in 5th grade!!! Its always better for them to be safe if they are going to do it... WHICH THEY SHOULD NOT BE AT THAT AGE, but do anyway! Ever hear children around that age speak? Im always around them... a lot of what they say even shocks me. My boyfriends little brother is 11 and he has a very very very dirty mind!

Here's the thing... - If a kid is asking for

[ In Reply To ..]
a condom, they've already made the choice, or at least are considering it. Does anyone really believe that their getting a condom, or not, is going to affect their decision when it comes right down to it? If they had to ask their parents, or knew that the school would notify their parents, they wouldn't use a condom! Condoms don't promote sex; they protect against disease and pregnancy for people who otherwise would not have that protection. Not having a condom doesn't stop anyone from having sex, except for maybe some responsible adults, but they're not the ones we're worried about, are they?

I completely agree. My husband and I were discussing this when we heard it on the news the other day. While the thought makes me want to vomit, I would much rather someone, anyone, give my child a condom if he/she is contemplating having sex than have them decide not to use one at all. Not having one is NOT going to stop them once they have their mind made up.

I think if you would ask any parent whose child contracted AIDS or herpes, they would have to agree.

Look at how we've sexualized society and our kids. - They probably need them

You can't watch anything on TV without their being some sexual innuendo, and every little girls' idol Miley has decided to be a poster child for trollopism. I would like to know how they define elementary school; hopping in my way-back machine, for me elementary school covered to 8th grade, which would be about 14, still too young but not as chilling as a 7 year old.

Have you ever watched Toddlers and Tiaras? Or that dance troupe of 6 and 7 year olds that were doing Beyonce at a recital? And the majority thought there was nothing wrong with it and was just soooooo cute. We've got our kids bumping and grinding before they're big enough to ride Space Mountain, and then we act shocked that there might be a need for sex ed and condoms in elementary school.

While no prude, I'm afraid morality wise we're here in Hades in a hand basket, and it seems to keep some 8 year old precocious little Miley wannabe from getting "accidentally" knocked up means we've got to start handing out condoms to the same kid that was visited by the Tooth Fairy last night.

Do Not Ask Chris Christie Where His Kids Go To SchoolJun 23, 2011
This guy wants to be President? Sheesh! What a nasty man. New Jersey Governor Chis Christie doesn't like it when reporters ask him to provide details on his meetings with Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes.Nor, apparently, is he fond of New Jersey voters asking him seemingly reasonable questions about why he sends his kids to private schools. He made that clear when the subject came up during an appearance on local PBS call-in show On The Line last night. "It's none of your business, ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...
