Romney's 47%.

Posted: Sep 23, 2012

My husband and his friends at work discuss politics at lunch, probably not with as little respect for each other as is sometimes shown on this board, but nonetheless that's a topic for another post. Yesterday, a lady who has been one of Obama's most ardent supporters, usually saying she just cannot support Romney because he is rich and cannot identify with her, told them of an incident she had witnessed that morning. She said a young man walked off his job and said he could make more on unemployment and food stamps. She said, immediately, Rommey's 47% remark came into her mind. She said, you know, he is right. This has to stop. I'm going to vote for Romney instead of Obama.  I hope others will see the logic to what Romney is actually saying. We need better management of our money in Washington.

The notion that it's somehow that simple - is simply not

Romney is dead-on. I was a documentary not long ago about welfare, etc. This one guy (and it was not unusual) walked into welfare saying he was getting his "free" money - he didn't have to work and wasn't going to look for work -because govt was taking care of him. Thing is, with more people depending on govt, those of us whose taxes are used for this will decided it "ain't fair" and give up. the Press is out to kill Romney's campaign. NOt sure why - they evidently don't care about our nation's safety or success. amazing..

I think I saw that same video. He was standing (sm) - Aunt Sue

in a long line, chatting it up on his cell phone paid for by we the taxpayers. He said why should he work, he couldn't find a job making what welfare pays him anyway, "obama money" buys his food, pays his rent. Why work? Plus he didn't have to pay any fricking taxes!!
Who made the "documentary"? Sounds like...sm - oldtimer

propaganda to me. No one else would use the term "obama money". FYI, welfare will not pay men not to work; also, unemployment ARE taxable.
No one else would use that term? Are you kidding me? (sm) - Aunt Sue

I think first of all the one I saw was a John Stossel piece. In case you don't know, he tries to call out the government (repub OR Dem) whenever he can. He is a Libertarian. No one would use that term? OMG, where have you been? I do think it's mostly the minorities that I've heard it from, the ones who think Obama because he is black is going to take care of them special. (he is). Did you never hear the women in Detroit when Obama was elected standing in line for their "Obama money" and when they were asked where it came from they pretty much said they didn't care, maybe Obama's own stash. If you've never seen it, I probably could find it for you on You Tube, but on the other hand, if you really wanted to see it, you could probably find it yourself.
I cannot find where John Stossel ever used the term - Obama money. nm

story. It's kind of funny why you folks are going to make a big deal out of this now when it has been going on forever. Some of you seem to think that this welfare fraud just started when Obama got in office. Sorry to burst your bubble but I knew and worked with people who were abusing the system since I was in the work force, since the 70s. This is nothing new. Of course there are more people on welfare now since we have no jobs in this country. Our economy has had many ups and downs through the years and this is a bad one and it started pre-Obama. The only way to fix this country is to get a control on welfare fraud, stop giving corporations tax breaks to send work overseas (which Sen Levin (D) is working on legislation to do that). I get his newsletters monthly and he has been working diligently to try to stop unfare offshoring practices. We need to get control of the illegals in this country. We need to stop sending billions of dollars to other countries when we can't take care of our own (fault of both parties). All this has to be done in order to fix this country. Right now the problem is that the group of kids running this country is more worried about criticizing each other instead of fixing problems.
Believe it or not, I agree with much of your post. (sm) - Aunt Sue

I agree that the welfare fraud didn't start with Obama, it has been going on for years. By changing the work rules, though, he is making things worse, making people think they can "get away" with more. They probably can. He seems to be making it easy for them. It's not just the corporations sending work overseas, the government itself is doing that, but someone needs to figure out (above my pay grade, afraid it's above Obama's too) how to make it profitable (dirty word?) in this country. I definitely agree about getting control of the illegals. Obama though does not seem willing to do that and the reason is the Latino vote. This sending money to other countries is ridiculous, for sure. I'm afraid 4 more years of Obama is just going to make things worse. But I guess we'll see.

at least agreeing with part of my post. Obama has actually passed Bush on deportations. Yes, our government ships work overseas, are and have been, not just on Obama's watch. None of us can forsee the future, but I certainly won't vote for Romney. I do believe that whichever one wins, all of government needs to stop acting like children and work together. It seems like neither side is willing to budge, thus, stalemating anything any president wants to do. This has to stop for the good of all of us. I don't like how corporations get away with what they do and I don't like the lazy people living off my tax dollars when they can get out and work. Maybe it is a blessing that some of these other countries are starting to demand higher wages like we get, so it won't be so profitable for these companies to create jobs overseas. We need cuts in welfare, which doesn't mean just cut everybody off. We need more social workers to weed out the fraud, so the people that actually need it can get it. Again, welfare fraud has been around for years and it is increasing, but if Romney gets in it will continue to rise unless we get more regulations in place to keep the lazy people off it and more government social workers to help weed out the fraud. Neither party has addressed any issues that will actually help all of us.

here is what the email I got said:

I thought you would be interested to know that yesterday, I held a hearing exposing how two major multinational corporations have dodged U.S. taxes by keeping billions of dollars in profits offshore.

At a time when our nation faces difficult budget choices and potential cuts in critical programs from education to health care to food inspections to national defense, these offshore tax avoidance schemes are unacceptable.

These companies take advantage of the security and stability of the U.S. economy, as well as the skills and hard work of U.S. employees to produce valuable products. Yet, through complex corporate structures, dubious transactions and legal fictions, these companies are able to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

Yesterday’s hearing presented two case histories involving Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. Microsoft, which took advantage of U.S. research and development tax credits to develop software and other successful products, used offshore subsidiaries to sell those products and shifted the profits to tax havens to dodge paying U.S. taxes. Hewlett-Packard, which keeps over 90% of its cash offshore, used two foreign subsidiaries to set up a series of alternating loans, with the blessing of their auditor Ernest & Young, to effectively bring back billions of dollars in that offshore cash to the United States without paying any taxes on those funds.

My subcommittee has worked to eliminate abusive practices like these for years, but the fiscal crisis now facing this country may make it possible to finally get changes made. Legislation I have introduced, the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act (S.1346) and the CUT Loopholes Act (S.2075), would eliminate many of the tax loopholes that encourage and enable U.S. companies to shift profits abroad. Our corporations ought to pay their fair share of revenues needed to pay for important priorities for seniors, the military, and our schools. While the IRS needs to make sure that companies’ practices are within the boundaries of the law, it is also critical that Congress ensure that these offshore tax abuses end.

Carl Levin

That is why those work for welfare programs should never have been altered. We have a huge population where I live that have made it their life's work to collect welfare, food stamps, medical care, phones, reduced rent, you name it, without ever having to get a job. They wear it like a badge of honor, and will tell you to your face, they love taking for free what someone else has worked hard to give them. Whatever you tolerate, you get more of.

That is just silly. I know from personal experience. sm - oldtimer

[ In Reply To ..]
You cannot just quit your job and collect unemployment. This is just perpetuation of an old republican urban legend with unemployment substituted for welfare.

Not silly. -

[ In Reply To ..]
It's the attitude, you're missing the point.

Never heard of such a thing as Republican urgan legends - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
But I do know if you quit you job and you cannot find another (which I imagine is pretty easy in this economy), you can file and your former employer can challenge (which some do not even bother to do). You will most likely eventually get benefits. There may be a penalty period if employer challenges, but if no job found, you will be able eventually to draw benefits. May vary from state to state.

No one can decide to quit - so they can collect benefits

[ In Reply To ..]
Only those unemployed persons who have been fired or laid off, or those who quit for JOB-RELATED reasons, such as a cut back in hours or pay, are eligible for benefits. Those who quit for job-related reasons must provide documentation that they tried to remedy the problem. Workers who quit for personal reasons, such as going to school full time or staying at home with their kids, do NOT qualify for benefits.

For those collecting benefits, an active job search, consisting of no less than 3 attempts, must be documented every week. It's not that easy to get UI benefits and in my state, safeguards against fraud are incorporated in their overall policies.
Not so hard to be dishonest. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I doubt anyone would quit a job and tell the unemployment people they just walked off because they didn't want to work. There are all types of excuses given. Do a search on some of the fraud going on in unemployement including overpayments of huge amounts to recipients (some of which did not have to be paid back because it was not the beneficiary's fault they were overpaid). It is easier than ever to be fraudulent with so many receiving benefits now.
There are ways. I've seen it. - nm

"The Republican Party, increasingly, is the party of urban legends: that tax cuts for the rich always pay for themselves, that government spending does not create jobs, that government overregulation of banks caused the crash of 2008, that global warming is not happening. The unconstitutionality of health care reform is another of those legends, legitimated in American culture by frequent repetition."

I think at this point that most of us realize that Romney's "47%" remark referred to his campaign focus.

That said, there is a contingency of people who will happily go on the dole rather than work. While yes, unemployment benefits must be qualified in order for a person to receive them, there is no small number of people who will fraudulently create a situation by which they can resign their position or be dismissed or have a "workplace accident." Many employers won't contest the application for unemployment benefits, which is what those people are counting on. The easier the government makes it to receive such benefits, the more lowlings are going to crawl out of the woodwork to claim them. It's really as simple as that.

The saddest part of people who are willing to take advantage of the system is that it deprives the people who really need it and robs the people who pay into the system.

Right on SK1 - me

[ In Reply To ..]
Too many people take advantage of the system indeed at our expense. Look, in addition, to all the illegals in this country who can march right into social services and get immediate financial assistance, food stamps, housing and health insurance. There is something wrong with a country that treats people here illegally with more leniency than those of us who work hard for a living. It has to stop.
