Many fortunes were made by many people, and lost, some weak businesses removed from the scene, but as it went on and on the problem became increasingly evident and worrisome that the national energy going into this big boom wasn't creating new goods, new national wealth, but was rather just "harvesting" profits by moving money around.
Like if a home builder stopped building and started buying large numbers of used homes, taking them apart, and selling off the pieces to plywood factories and used appliance stores. Here and there that might be a good thing, but not if it goes on for years and years. And not when some owners are forced to sell to profit sharks.
