"GOP platform through the years shows the party's shift

Posted: Sep 6, 2012

This article from the Washington Post is easy reading, very interesting, not offensive to anyone, and gives a quick historic overview through our lifetimes. As it says, "What it means to be a Republican has changed enormously over the past half-century."

The platforms of 1980 and 1992 are the biggies, the big "pivot points."

The watershed platform of 1980 introduces tax cuts and an increasingly critical attitude toward government. “The Republican Party declares war on government overregulation,” it says.

I imagine a lot of us here kind of remember those elections, like President Reagan's voters-mandate sweep into office.

Do Teeth Shift If You Are Over 50 Years OldFeb 25, 2013
Okay, weird question, but I'm wondering if your teeth shift around after a certain age (I'm 53). The reason is this.  About 4 months or so ago I had a tooth that broke in half.  It is one that has a filling.  Went to the dentist and it cannot be repaired.  It needs to be extracted and then I would get a bridge or partial.  It is not in the front, it is in the middle (3rd tooth from my back molar - in other words if I smile or laugh you don't see it).  ...

T-party/Pubs Shows True ColorsSep 13, 2011
At the debate last night, the audience cheered when Ron Paul as wasked "What do you tell a guy who is sick, goes into a coma and doesn't have health insurance? Who pays for his coverage? "Are you saying society should just let him die?" "Yeah!" several members of the crowd yelled out. Paul's explanation: This was, more-or-less, the root choice of a free society. At the last debate, the crowd cheered when Perry was questioned about executions. People executed during his go ...

Polling Shows The Tea Party Is Actually Authoritarian (and StronglyOct 25, 2012
From Discover Magazine, by Chris Mooney The New York Times just ran an oped by social scientists Robert Putnam and David Campbell, reporting on polling results about the Tea Party. This dovetails very closely with a discussion we̢۪ve been having here, and provides additional evidence suggesting that this movement is not libertarian: So what do Tea Partiers have in common? They are overwhelmingly white, but even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and ...

"Who Killed American Unions?" Powerful Graph Shows Shows Middle Class IncomeJan 17, 2013
From The Atlantic: "Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker doesn't like unions, and unions don't like him. But the most remarkable thing about Walker's relationship to labor isn't that he thinks unions are worthless -- most Republicans agree -- but that he thinks about them, at all. Today, unions have been swept into dusty corners of the U.S. workforce, such as Las Vegas casino cleaners and New York City hotel staff. For much of the 20th century, things were different. A ...

Hubby On Night ShiftApr 22, 2010
My hubby just recently switched back to 12-hour night shifts.  Lately I have been putting a sticky note on the doorbell during the day that says, "Please do not ring doorbell until after 2 p.m."  The other day I was told that this was rude by a neighbor.  Can you believe that? If they need to get ahold of me bad enough, they can call my cell. I feel like I have to constantly protect hubby's sleep time and our family time now, not to mention be left alone to do my job.  ...

And Here's Krugman On Another Significant Shift. Nov 07, 2012
So, for a while there during the campaign it seemed very iffy. But in the end, discipline and being on the right side of the issues prevailed. Yes, Elizabeth Warren won! Oh, and that guy Obama too. Tomorrow — or I guess today — comes the cleanup; when thousands, perhaps millions, of right-wing heads explode, it makes quite a mess. Also, notice that the polls were right. I wonder if I can get invited when Nate Silver is sworn in as president? OK, somewhat more seriously: one bi ...

Down-ballot Blues Shift GOP Message Masters Aug 19, 2012
Within hours of the GOP VP announcement, Frank Luntz released a directive to campaign strategists on how to handle the inevitable field day they anticipated media and democrats would be hosting over Medicare and Social Security policy.  It went something like this:  Do not say: “entitlement reform, privatization, or every option is on the table.”  The NRCC wants those phrases scoured from stump rhetoric and replaced with less innocuous visions, such as depicting an age ...

In Shift, Feds Target Top Execs For Health Fraud'May 31, 2011
WASHINGTON -- It's getting personal now. In a shift still evolving, federal enforcers are targeting individual executives in health care fraud cases that used to be aimed at impersonal corporations. The new tactic is raising the anxiety level – and risks – for corporate honchos at drug companies, medical device manufacturers, nursing home chains and other major health care enterprises that deal with Medicare and Medicaid. Previously, if a company got caught, its lawy ...

I Can Summarize The GOP's Platform.Nov 11, 2015
1.) End corporate regulation2.) End corporate taxation, while raising the taxes of people who earn less than $100,000 a year3.) End Medicare, Medicaid, and any government subsidies for healthcare. You either pay outrageous rates for insurance, or pay directly, out of pocket, for healthcare that is the most expensive in the world.....or you don't get healthcare.4.) Education is only for the wealthiest Americans.5.) Don't raise the minimum wage....abolish it. The masses should accept wha ...

Bernie Sanders PlatformMay 07, 2015
Income and wealth inequality: In the United States today we have the most unequal wealth and income distribution of any major country on earth -- worse than at any time since the 1920s. This is an economy that must be changed in fundamental ways. Jobs and income: In my view, we need a massive federal jobs program which puts millions of our people back to work. We must end our disastrous trade policies. We need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. And we have to fight for pay equity ...

RNC Chair Priebus: GOP Platform Is Not NecessarilyAug 22, 2012
This is a bold strategy indeed for the party creed rollout….a candidate disclaimer stating they are not bound to abide by party principles.  I guess it’s a handy escape hatch for a nominee who HAS no core beliefs.  See, the party wants to run on the personhood plank, but they just don’t want to damage their candidates’ future political careers too much by making them say it out loud, in case they need to recycle the VEEP candidate in 2016.  That Reinc ...

Breaking News! DNC Is Making Changes To The PlatformSep 05, 2012
They're putting back the language of "Jerusalem is, and always will be, the capital of Israel" and the phrases using "God" that were in the 2008 campaign but were taken out in this year's campaign (and Durbin flew off the handle about yesterday). GOP 2012 Platform's Position On Climate Change.Sep 01, 2012
The GOP's 2008 platform's statement on climate change said, "common sense dictates that the United States should take measured and reasonable steps today to reduce any impact on the environment. " March backwards to 2012 and we have...no statement on climate change at all, much less applying good sense to it. Quite the contrary, as in commercial concerns such as "take quick action to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations.”&n ...

The Tea Party (disgusting And Full Of Vitrole And Hatred) Are Not The Republican Party HopefullyApr 17, 2011
I hope with everything I have in me that the Tea Party does not represent the Republican Party. This is what the Tea Party stands for. They are full of vitriole and hatred. This is not what the Republican party stands for. See comments by Republican Party of Orange County Chairman Scott Baugh, "It's just highly inappropriate, it's a despicable message, it drips with racism and I think she should step down from the committee," said Baugh. "Davenport, a tea party activist, represents t ...
