"Who Killed American Unions?" Powerful graph shows shows middle class income

Posted: Jan 17, 2013

From The Atlantic: "Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker doesn't like unions, and unions don't like him. But the most remarkable thing about Walker's relationship to labor isn't that he thinks unions are worthless -- most Republicans agree -- but that he thinks about them, at all.

Today, unions have been swept into dusty corners of the U.S. workforce, such as Las Vegas casino cleaners and New York City hotel staff.

For much of the 20th century, things were different. Almost every person living in the Northeast, Midwest and California "was in a union himself/herself, had a family member in a union, or, at least, had a friend or neighbor in a union," Rich Yeleson, veteran in the labor movement, writes in The New Republic. The apogee of the unions was also the apogee of the middle class, when it commanded more than half of total income. As the union membership rate dropped, middle class share of income fell, too."

Sorry, the graph wouldn't copy, so use the link below for it and to find out what the heck happened to U.S. wages. The graph shows two lines dropping together from upper left to bottom right--where we are today.

for cash in this entitlement society we live in now are tired of having money taken out of their checks without even having a choice in the matter. The unions have just become another bunch of thugs.

Unions needed shooting, burying, and to be newborn - long ago. They're small potatoes now.

Coincidentally, so is the American worker. MTs come here to complain and post "messages to the boss" that they simply cannot deliver themselves without being fired. But once we did--together, through our unions--and the companies listened.

"They" being the middle class also. I agree unions got so - bad I wouldn't join one. BUT that we

abandoned unions instead of fixing them is by far one of the stupidest things the middle class has ever done.

The rise of the middle class as a direct result of poor workers unionizing for collective bargaining should have made very obvious what was going to happen when we just stopped. After all, the older among us watched almost the entire thing happen. Grew up with working parents eking out a modest living, raised our own children like real-life Happy Days, then the decline.

Not that we're at bottom yet because many of us managed to accrue some modest "wealth" that's carrying us right now. But many of our kids are already living it.

So, are you saying that it is the fault of the workers that unions have diminished power? After all, unions are made up of everyday workers. Why do you think middle class incomes have fallen?

Yesterday, Feb. 1, at 4:00 pm, Reuters published an article on the back door taxes on the middle class imposed by Obama. White House minions protested, so at 8:07 pm last night, pusillanimous Reuters withdrew the article, saying:  ”The story Backdoor taxes to hit middle class has been withdrawn. A replacement story will run later in the week.” See here. This is exactly the sort of anti-democratic anti-liberty measures that took place in totalitarian systems, Nazi ...

Those even closer to the poverty line can get additional subsidies that reduce the deductibles, which can run into the thousands of dollars. From Discover Magazine, by Chris Mooney The New York Times just ran an oped by social scientists Robert Putnam and David Campbell, reporting on polling results about the Tea Party.
