Bernie Sanders Platform

Income and wealth inequality: In the United States today we have the most unequal wealth and income distribution of any major country on earth -- worse than at any time since the 1920s. This is an economy that must be changed in fundamental ways.
Jobs and income: In my view, we need a massive federal jobs program which puts millions of our people back to work. We must end our disastrous trade policies. We need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. And we have to fight for pay equity for women.
Campaign finance reform: As a result of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, American democracy is being undermined by the ability of the Koch brothers and other billionaire families. These wealthy contributors can literally buy politicians and elections by spending hundreds of millions of dollars in support of the candidates of their choice. We need to overturn Citizens United and move toward public funding of elections so that all candidates can run for office without being beholden to the wealthy and powerful.
Climate change: Climate change is real, caused by human activity and already devastating our nation and planet. The United States must lead the world in combating climate change and transforming our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and sustainability.
College affordability: Every person in this country who has the desire and ability should be able to get all the education they need regardless of the income of their family. This is not a radical idea. In Germany, Scandinavia and many other countries, higher education is either free or very inexpensive. We must do the same.
Health care: Shamefully, the United States remains the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people. The United States must move toward a Medicare-for-all single-payer system. Health care is a right, not a privilege.
____________
While we will never raise as much money as our opponents who receive huge donations from wealthy individuals and super PACs, I have been amazed by the outpouring of grassroots financial support that we have secured. While my opponents hold fundraising events in which a handful of millionaires make huge contributions, we are gaining extraordinary support with modest contributions coming from the working families and middle class of our country.
That's what my politics is all about. That's what I want to do throughout this campaign. And I want to thank all of you for your support.
_____________
The Obama campaign had a lot of grassroots support also, a whole lot of people giving $50.
This may be more interesting than I first thought.
Poverty: The United States has more people living in poverty than at almost any time in the modern history of our country. I believe that in a democratic, civilized society none of our people should be hungry or living in desperation. We need to expand Social Security, not cut it. We need to increase funding for nutrition programs, not cut them.
Tax reform: We need real tax reform which makes the rich and profitable corporations begin to pay their fair share of taxes. We need a tax system which is fair and progressive. Children should not go hungry in this country while profitable corporations and the wealthy avoid their tax responsibilities by stashing their money in the Cayman Islands.
And these are just some of the issues that we will be dealing with.
;
Thank you. That pretty much hits all....sm - VTMT

Aah, yes - the socialist pixie-dust. Life should be - lovely for everyone. Tra-la.

Puts me back in the 60s. Pass the doobie, brother.
"Income inequality" even sounds unfair, doesn't it? Why, it's downright un-Amurukun. Except (1) it isn't unfair, and it (2) isn't un-Amurukun. If anything, it's Bernie Sanders' goofy ideas that are un-Amurukun.
Do I like anyone making 30,000 times what I make? No, but I'm not prepared to live under ANY system that would redistribute their income to me.
Then, there's who pays for all this loveliness (expanding entitlement programs, etc.). Why, of course it will be those nasty corporations that don't pay income taxes.
Here again, sounds good. Do I like the idea that a corporation doesn't pay income taxes? Absolutely not. Sounds downright un-Amurukun. But, then I remember a couple of other things:
1. Corporations don't pay taxes anyway, at least the way we think of it, even when they do "pay taxes". For the most part, corporations turn out to be little more than transfer agents. (Taxes are costs, you see.)
2. A lot of ordinary Ma and Pa Kettles own stock in these corporations, which pay them dividends, and hopefully some capital gains, both of which are directly related to a company's profit. Ma and Pa make these investments with the hope of taking self-responsibility for funding one's own retirement instead of depending on the government. So, just how much sense does it make to talk about "increasing Social Security" on one hand while proposing to screw the means of retirement investing?
3. The US already has the highest corporate tax rate of any developed country, and it's corporate taxes that are keeping over $1 trillion in corporate profits sequestered overseas instead of being spent here in this country.
Good thinking, Bernie!!
I have to laugh every time I hear Bernie Sanders' name, he's such a twaddle-pusher. I remember a news conference several years ago when a cheeky reporter probed Sanders' personal commitment to "income equality" with his own staff (nil), and asked what he knew about "income inequality" in socialist countries (dodged).
As the electorate, we have to think deeper than the political pixie dust. Sanders isn't the only one spreading it around, of course. He just happens to have the biggest shovel.

had you had the opportunity, you would have voted against Medicare and Social Security, minimum wage laws, child labor laws, etc. After all, why inhibit capitalism in any way at all?
Unless not really an MT, would be lucky - to be alive at all

False debate: First, attribute to your opponent - something they didn't say....

I don't blame people who think this sort of thing represents reasoned debate. I blame the public education system.
I agree with the poster's interpretation 100%. - sm

I understood the words "sounds as though" to mean that what followed would be the poster's interpretation. I guess it's possible that schooling outside the "public education system" doesn't always cover basic definitions and concepts, but it's fairly common knowledge that the words "sounds as though" are going to be followed by someone's opinion.
In your post, you said: "Do I like anyone making 30,000 times what I make? No, but I'm not prepared to live under ANY system that would redistribute their income to me."
If you're going to post words like that and capitalize words like "ANY," then you're going to naturally give people the impression that you'd like to do away with the entire social safety net, including possibly minimum wage and child labor laws altogether. It's not really "extreme or ridiculous" to think that someone who said the things about corporations as contained in your post would advocate for unfettered capitalism. In this day and age when so many GOP politicians are advocating the repeal of Obamacare 50+ times, the extreme cutting of the social safety net, with corporations moving overseas to take advantage of cheap labor that absolutely does include children's labor, and with GOP politicians like Newt Gingrich referring to child labor laws in America as "truly stupid," there's nothing at all extreme and ridiculous in what she posted.
You said: "First, attribute to your opponent something they didn't say making sure it's quite extreme and ridiculous, and then 'argue' with the straw man."
She didn't attribute anything to you at all; she simply stated "sounds as though," and she followed that statement with her opinion. After reading your post, I think she was 100% spot on with her interpretation, and I don't think there's anything extreme or ridiculous about what she suggested, particularly in light of the fact that that many GOP politicians are advocating for those very things. What she posted was her opinion, and your response was to say that she put words in your mouth, which words were very clearly her opinion of what you wrote and weren't attributed to you at all.
Sounds as though your straw man argument here actually is the straw man argument here.
False Debate: Insult your opponent's debating skills/intelligence - to distract us from lack of true point rebuttal

Maybe it doesn't have to be so "either/or." Neither "capitalism only" or - "socialism only" restores middle class
[ In Reply To ..]
But I guess it depends on what people want/believe. If they even WANT the middle class to be restored and less disparity between the upper and lower classes.
Kf they're the sort to believe if we just work really hard and are innovative we'll all be billionaires and it's about personal success only, then I guess it's capitalism only.
If instead they believe there are other factors that prohibit this kind of success sometimes (to include not just race, gender, etc., but also trust/monopoly issues and unfair competition/business sabotage), and also want to help those less capable or fortunate in society, well then some government regulation and taxation might be important to them.
As for me, I believe in checks-and-balances capitalism; I don't want equal pay or equal tax across the board, that's devaluing human work, too, and actually hurts the poorest classes the most. But I do think some regulation of fair business practice legislation is necessary, not just for individuals, but for small-company vs. large-company competition.
I don't have a problem with communism or socialism in theory, just in practice. And that is the problem with implementing socialism and communism, theory vs. practice. Because in either on a large scale, people DON'T really end up owning a piece of production or community wealth, a small oligarchy of greedy government bureaucrats end up owning and controlling it.
Though Karl Marx was a little crazy sometimes, he also said some good stuff in theory, maybe we don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For instance, he said that humans are happiest when they create, craftsmanship that is valued. And not being just a part of the process of creation, but part of the entire process and having that work valued.
And when they can't and become a commodity themselves (as was happening with the industrial revolution at the time), they will become devalued in society and begin to devalue themselves and that will lead to depression, aggression and even workplace violence in some extreme cases. Considering we've seen that happen in the latter part of this last century and already in this one, was he psychic or just accurately assessed patterns and saw where we were headed economically?
All this other stuff about religion control, culture control, free speech control was not originally a part of Marxist theory or even Communist theory; the problem is that's what happens when you put JUST socialism or communism into practice or just fascism into practice.
If I could trust the government to redistribute the wealth a bit more fairly (not equally, but more fairly), I would. But the problem is, that's not what ends up happening, despite good intent.Because whether it's corporations or government, we can never under estimate the power of human greed affecting those in charge of distributing it.
Unfortunately, just like in Lord of the Rings, those who even WANT the power of the ring are almost always those least deserving of having it;) They may start out with good intent, but absolute power corrupts absolutely, it's a rare thing indeed that it doesn't, it's unfortunately human nature, moreso with those in politics.
In my opinion, we need both capitalism and socialism, one to check the other, just like having republicans and democrats. Only perhaps the focus needs to get back to creating and restoring balance rather than being in control :)
The "pixie-dust" life beats the heck out of - life under Republican despots.
