hubby on night shift

Posted: Apr 22, 2010

My hubby just recently switched back to 12-hour night shifts.  Lately I have been putting a sticky note on the doorbell during the day that says, "Please do not ring doorbell until after 2 p.m."  The other day I was told that this was rude by a neighbor.  Can you believe that? If they need to get ahold of me bad enough, they can call my cell.

I feel like I have to constantly protect hubby's sleep time and our family time now, not to mention be left alone to do my job.  Of course, they probably think I have all the free time in the world since I work from home. lol

My personal opinion is the neighbor is being rude. - sn

Really not the neighbor's business at all.

Do Not Disturb sign - old mter

[ In Reply To ..]
We had that problem with the neighbors kids. We have an empty nest now and the two teenagers were knocking on the door all the time to "visit". So finally we made a big sign in bold black letters Do Not Disturb - of course then we had to unplug the phone because they would call. Thank God they now have more friends and are leaving the "old folks" alone!

I can definitely understand where you are coming from and don't feel alone. My husband works third shift, which means he has to sleep all day. When my kids are home, it seems I constantly have to tell them to be quiet and keep the dogs from barking. As for our family time, it seems like we don't get much of that anymore except on Saturdays (I have to work on Sundays (it sucks), which is our family day. A lot of evenings, I am up working (my shift normally ends at 3:30 CST and my kids get home from school at 4:00) and I don't get to spend much quality time with them on the days I work and it makes me feel guilty. Although I like my job and the company I work for, it seems it has become all-consuming and takes time away with my family and other things that need to be done. How do I find a happy medium between my job and my family?

If they think the sticky is "rude", maybe you should - instead put up a huge SIGN! ;D NM

I think the neighbors are being rude. Your work schedule and sleep schedule is more important than their "offense" at a post-it note!

We have neighbors like that, though. My husband works 2nd shift and I don't start work until 11 AM. A year ago, UPS came by before we were up and asked a neighbor to sign for the package. The neighbor complained to us about our work/sleep schedule. We rarely talk to him but if we do, he still brings up the UPS package! Unbelievable.

Neighbors can be so weird - Go put the sticky on HER door

I could give a rat's behind what my neighbors think. Of course, I am civil to them, and we all get along well, but when it comes to how I run my household, they can go pound sand if they think I care one iota what they think.

I don't answer the door when I'm working. I disabled the doorbell on purpose. My neighbors know I'm here, and occasionally one will knock when I'm working. I don't answer. It's not rude, I'm WORKING, don't bother me. My DH thinks it's rather funny that they even bother knocking at all.

I would have handed her that post it note and told her that you just figured out a new place to "stick" it.

Then ask her if she still thinks you're rude.

LOL!!! I like the way you think - Good one (sm)

What is rude is neighbors who know that someone WORKS at home and come calling during their work hours.

Get a different doorbell that you can unplug and plug back in.. sm - Solved!

when he's sleeping or not sleeping. Take the 'control' as it were, out of the hands of the neighbor and put it back where it belongs; with you. =)

MIND LOCK - Last Night I "Just Turned It Off"/Abandoned My Shift: What Now?Apr 06, 2010
I signed on for my normal shift at Midnight and got immediately hit with an unknown hospital,  uknown dictator from outside my CCM's 'book of work.'  I couldn't understand the dictator who was a ESL, thick accent interspersed with serial "mumbles with thick accent."  Looked for an old report, put in all the correct information, even tried adjusting it several times -- came up with no old reports.  At this point, mental incapacitation seemed to set in; I s ...

So, for a while there during the campaign it seemed very iffy. But in the end, discipline and being on the right side of the issues prevailed. Yes, Elizabeth Warren won! Oh, and that guy Obama too. Tomorrow — or I guess today — comes the cleanup; when thousands, perhaps millions, of right-wing heads explode, it makes quite a mess. Also, notice that the polls were right. I wonder if I can get invited when Nate Silver is sworn in as president? OK, somewhat more seriously: one bi ...

Do Teeth Shift If You Are Over 50 Years OldFeb 25, 2013
Okay, weird question, but I'm wondering if your teeth shift around after a certain age (I'm 53). The reason is this.  About 4 months or so ago I had a tooth that broke in half.  It is one that has a filling.  Went to the dentist and it cannot be repaired.  It needs to be extracted and then I would get a bridge or partial.  It is not in the front, it is in the middle (3rd tooth from my back molar - in other words if I smile or laugh you don't see it).  ...

Down-ballot Blues Shift GOP Message Masters Aug 19, 2012
Within hours of the GOP VP announcement, Frank Luntz released a directive to campaign strategists on how to handle the inevitable field day they anticipated media and democrats would be hosting over Medicare and Social Security policy.  It went something like this:  Do not say: “entitlement reform, privatization, or every option is on the table.”  The NRCC wants those phrases scoured from stump rhetoric and replaced with less innocuous visions, such as depicting an age ...

In Shift, Feds Target Top Execs For Health Fraud'May 31, 2011
WASHINGTON -- It's getting personal now. In a shift still evolving, federal enforcers are targeting individual executives in health care fraud cases that used to be aimed at impersonal corporations. The new tactic is raising the anxiety level – and risks – for corporate honchos at drug companies, medical device manufacturers, nursing home chains and other major health care enterprises that deal with Medicare and Medicaid. Previously, if a company got caught, its lawy ...

"GOP Platform Through The Years Shows The Party's ShiftSep 06, 2012
This article from the Washington Post is easy reading, very interesting, not offensive to anyone, and gives a quick historic overview through our lifetimes. As it says, "What it means to be a Republican has changed enormously over the past half-century." The platforms of 1980 and 1992 are the biggies, the big "pivot points."  The watershed platform of 1980 introduces tax cuts and an increasingly critical attitude toward government. “The Republican Party declares war on governm ...

Need Hubby AdviceNov 30, 2009
I really need some help here and this is the only place to get it fast.  My husband and I are separated.  I caught him having "affair" at work, he was paying for some lady at work's car repairs, and sabotaged my daughter's attempt to work in this lady's department, along with lots and lots of lies and secrets and covering up.  Short story, when confronted, he moved out and filed for divorce (and, of course is blaming me for the whole thing, saying I kicked him out - ...

Every year at Christmas my hubby is able to take two weeks off, which is wonderful for him but is beginning to stink for me.  By the time his vacation is over I will be extremely resentful towards him and I hate that.  In years past he has always done everything he can to help me out while I am working, cleaning the house, wrapping presents, picking up little odd and end gifts, etc.  However, this year all he has done is lay on the couch and sleep after sleeping until 11:00 every ...

About to head out with DH for a nice Italian dinner. Just wondering how many MTs try to fit in a date night with the DH/SO/partner every month or so. Last Night's SOTUJan 29, 2014
Well, I thought the President basically lacked passion last night. Nothing he said was with conviction like we've seen in the past. I did not find him believable. The only positive thing I really heard was that he seemed to acknowledge that the economy had not improved during his 5 years in office and he wanted the CEOs of the country to pay their people more money (obviously, I'm paraphrasing here). Hopefully, the CEOs of the MTSOs will take heed and listen to the Commander in Ch ...
