DOJ feeling pressure to look further into Zimmerman

Posted: Jul 16, 2013

Looks like the pressure, protests and outrage is going to prove helpful to provide further investigation into the racial profiling of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman.  Eric Holder is expected to make a statement later.

The FBI already investigated and found nothing - I can't imagine that the DOJ will find anything different, but I guess I understand the need to calm the waters and make it look like they're doing something.

Not sure waters can be calmed. - Until Zimmerman is punished

[ In Reply To ..]
Things aren't going to go away till Zimmerman pays some sort of price for killing a black teen and walking away a free man.

Except that he was found not guilty.. - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
and there was no evidence that it was a hate crime or racially motivated. I'm not sure how there can be any legal punishment. It was a tragic accident, but it wasn't illegal. I think maybe Florida needs to take a good hard look at the stand your ground law. I'm all for protecting yourself, with a gun if necessary, but the way the law reads is something to the effect that if you feel threatened, you can use deadly force. No one can prove how you did or didn't feel at a specific time - leaves things open to be impossible to challenge.
Not guilty verdict does not mean innoccence - DOJ needs to investigate
[ In Reply To ..]
This is a whole separate issue. It is apparent Zimmerman racially profiled Trayvon as he racially profiled others on 6 prior occasions in recorded phone calls to the police.

The prosecution was not allowed to suggest there was "racial" profiling but the fact remains because of the previous phone calls, Trayvon was profiled and stalked.

We will just have to wait and see won't we. It's in DOJ hands to do whatever they can do.
Actually, not guilty does mean - innocent...
[ In Reply To ..]
because in a court of law, you're innocent until proven guilty.
Google. - Not guilty versus innocent
[ In Reply To ..]
The case was not proved by the prosecution according to juror who gave interview even though 3 jurors wanted to find Zimmerman guilty of either Manslaughter or 2nd degree murder. They found him not guilty but that does not mean he is innocent.
Not guilty means just that - It means he is not guilty of a crime
[ In Reply To ..]
Not guilty means that the prosecutors could not prove their case beyond reasonable doubt. That means there was not enough evidence to prove that he was guilty. Whether or not someone is innocent is a personal belief, mostly in this case based on no facts, but just the lies that the media put out. This is no different than the Casey Anthony case. The media had everyone in a frenzy about her to. In both cases there was no evidence to prove he did the crime that they were charging him with.

The FBI has investigated and found this was not racially motivated. It's not in the DOJ's hands. The FBI has investigated and spoken.
The prosecution had a weak case and no one can understand - Truthhurts

how the Stand Your Ground law came into being. It wasn't the prosecution.

i think the media said something last year about the Stand Your Ground and every other media outlet picked up on that and ran with it as if that was why GZ was being prosecuted.

GZ was found not guilty because it was considered self-defense.

On that note, too, Holder stated this afternoon that they need to seriously look at the self-defense law. He even mentioned the Stand Your Ground law as part of the case, but it wasn't...so that tells me that he didn't know anything about this trial except what Sharpton and others may have told him. I think if Holder wants to get involved in state law and trials, he needs to thoroughly look at the case before making statements.
*********************. - Zimmerman got away with murder
[ In Reply To ..]
Zimmerman was found not guilty because there were 6 women (5 white, 1 Hispanic) on the jury who could identify with an adult white Hispanic male and not a black teen.

The juror who gave the interview was all praise for Zimmerman and some have mentioned she may have been a stealth juror. Read criticism of her explanations and people are not kind to her. I suspect we will not be hearing from her in the near future anonymously and she will never be identified publicly. Looks like she may be hiding out with Zimmerman.
What exactly is a white- - hispanic?
[ In Reply To ..]
Is that the same as biracial (since his father is white and his mother is hispanic)or is this some new hyphenation?
It's a new winger buzz word designed to mock and distract from - racial elements of TM/GZ case.

contrary to what you have stated, however, Stand your Ground figured prominently in this case and has everything to do with why Zimmerman was not initially charged. It certainly has nothing to do with why he was being prosecuted.

I would tend to agree, but OTOH, I put nothing past this - administration - (sm)

they will twist and turn and find something - if nothing there, they will invent something.

There is something there. - That's clear.

[ In Reply To ..]
Trayvon was profiled as were 6 other black males that Zimmerman phoned the police about previously. Those calls were in trial evidence.
Then the FBI should have (sm) - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
called it a hate crime when they investigated. They interviewed 36 people. Why didn't they? Besides, the break-ins that had occurred in the neighborhood were all young black males. So if that's who was reported, obviously there was a reason.
DOJ is completely different and "hate" crime - is not on the table.
[ In Reply To ..]
It is the Zimmerman profiling and violating Trayvon's civil rights. All black males are not criminals. They have the right to go to their homes where they stay without being reported, stalked and killed by a paranoid person with a gun.
thank you. - nm

FBI Investigated - Was not a hate crime - Holder has no case

The FBI has already investigated this and found this was not a hate crime.

They need to drop it and move on. Case is closed.

Obviously the case is not closed. - Zimmerman is being investigated

DOJ Eric Holder will make statement. Protests continue.

Plus there are the civil suits....

I don't call that a protest.

Holder should listen to Obama. Obama stated - "jury has spoken"

[ In Reply To ..]
“I know this case has elicited strong passions,” the president said. “And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken.”

Coments: The case has elicited strong passons because of your unwarranted comments without know the facts.

Most important though is he said "We are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken". That means leave it along DOJ. The president has spoken.
Amazing - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
Or maybe amusing. Posts from posters who previously have not had one good thing to say about our president are now quoting him.

FBI had a nice chat with Z's friends, coworkers - and neighbors

[ In Reply To ..]
over a couple of weeks periods and called it a wrap. The DOJ is not the FBI and will be taking a much different approach. Their inquiry started BEFORE the special prosecutor was assigned, was suspended while the state prosecuted the case, then resumed once the acquittal verdict came in. I think it's safe to assume they will be bringing all their investigatory resources to bear before deciding on how to proceed so, no, that case is not closed.

Then there's the civil suit where Z will have to testify so, no, that case is not closed either. I seriously doubt either the DOJ or the Martin Family are going to be the least bit intimidated by O'Mara, West or the chorus coming out of the Zimmerman fan club who are all trying their best to make this all go away. Ain't happenin' anytime soon.

Eric Holder is really a piece of work. In his speech (sm) - LM

at the NAACP today, he either thought he was speaking to uninformed people or he was trying to incite more racial hatred - when he talked about "stand your ground" needed to be changed, and the audience cheered. Do they not know that this was no way brought into the Zimmerman trial? It was self-defense, not stand your ground.

Stand your ground was brought up in trial - and by O'Mara previously

[ In Reply To ..]
Pay attention. In turn, he believes stand your ground should be changed in general.

Stevie Wonder announced in protest that he would not perform in Florida or any state that had stand your ground laws.

Nitwits with guns can stand behind stand your ground or self-defense after they murder someone.

No, it was not. - It was self defense.

If you must insult, at least have the integrity to do it in your subject line so we can avoid it.

Well, except for Georgie's A- and big fat lie he told - in his Hannity/Fox interview

[ In Reply To ..]
that he knew nothing about it. Except for attorney's on both sides who repeatedly cited it. Except for the judge who included it in the jury instructions that self-defense meant Zimmerman was entitled to “stand his ground” with “no duty to retreat." Except for the loosed-lipped anonymous juror interviewed by AC who said jurors considered Florida’s Stand Your Ground law in its deliberations. Other than those numerous instances, I suppose you could say there was no way stand your ground laws were brought into the Zimmerman trial if you were addressing a low-info audience like the one you falsely claim Holder was addressing.

Watching news over the weekend and especially morning shows today,  it appears lots of protests and pressure on to file federal charges against Zimmerman.  It was brought up by white lawyer/commentator on Today show,  Lisa Bloom, that this indeed was a racial case with Zimmerman profiling black males in 5 previous 911 phone calls (in evidence), yet the prosecution did not want to suggest profling was an issue.  Surprisingly, the groundswell of protestors of the Zimmerman ve ...
