Back pain - how do you continue to work

Posted: Jan 3, 2012

when you have severe back pain?  What helps you to pull through.  Is there a way to setup your laptop different to relieve stress on the back.  I hurt my back the day after Christmas, got a pain shot and medications, but nothing is working.  I am in constant pain all day long and have no paid time off.  The doctor's excuse ran out yesterday and the back pain is worse with low back pain running into my hip down the outside of the leg to about knee level.  I can't sleep, sit, stand or lie down.  Nothing makes it better.  I could continue to work if I can find a way to set things up different so I wanted to hear your ideas.  There is no wireless here where I live so I can't set it up at a recliner, etc.  What did you do about operating the foot pedals, etc.   I could use all the advice I can get.  I don't have insurance so I hate to go back to the doctor as we really, really can't afford it.

Sounds like you have sciatica or pyriformis - syndrome SM

Whatever you did when you fell, sounds like something is pressing on the nerve. I had a really bad fall about 10 years and still suffer from this. I cannot work without a heating pad on my butt/upper thigh area. I have to keep my leg up on the desk (the side that was hurt). I pop anti inflammatories and aspirin all day long. I did have an MRI a while after it happened, nothing stood out at the time. I think mine is scar tissue impinging the nerve. I had a hematoma that you would not believe after my fall and could not afford to get medical help at that time. I am so sorry you are suffering this way.

Would also suggest doing some stretching - exercises for SM

this area. Look up on the internet if you don't know what they are. Gentle stretching, don't do anything that might hurt you. Stretching, heat, meds, massage, all of these help. The real problem is that the worse position to be in if you do indeed have a sciatica/pyriformis type problem is sitting.

Sometimes it takes more than 1 injection to work or a different type of injection, and not all pain medications are the same or work for everybody the same way. For instance, if you had an epidural injection, and this did not work, either try a second one or perhaps intra-articular or medial branch blocks (good for axial low back pain). If these work, then progress to an radiofrequency thermocoagulation, which can provide up to 1 year of pain relief. Different pain medications: There are several on the market, and if one does not work, try another or (with your doctor's permission) at a different dose. Only one has worked for me. There are also long-acting and short-acting. I also work with a Thermaphore moist heating pad strapped to my chair. Get a good pain doctor, as he will become your best friend if you plan to continue working. Remember to take breaks. I have had less low back pain since switching to digital files versus using a transcriber. Lidoderm patches also help. Good luck! Hope you feel better.

luckylady: Good advice except she stated - she has no money NM

Back pain for years - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I had back pain for years. It was down into my right buttock too. It was sciatica mixed with degenerative arthritis. First of all, see if they will try a steroid taper like prednisone. It works pretty well for sciatica. Unfortunately pushing up and down on a pedal will aggravate it. Try switching to the other foot for a while. In the end I had a radiofrequency ablation. It can last for up to one year or more. Mine is over 2 yrs old and still terrific. I couldn't walk more than an hour and then I would have trouble even lowering myself in a car. Now I can walk 4 or 5 hours and feel fine. Try finding a physiatrist. Most ortho groups or pain management clinics have one.

If you can transcribe with ExpressScribe,
you can use the hotkeys instead of a pedal. I have lower back problems, and not using a pedal has really helped to reduce my pain.

I know it is the most common complaint doctors hear - and for years I have had the stressed-tired-overworked fatigue - I know how that one feels.  But this has been going on a couple of months.  I am bone tired even after I sleep a lot.  My blood work showed I am hypothyroid so I started on medicine and also some supplements for that.  But nothing seems to be helping.  I have pain/fatigue across the area of my back right at the braline.  My arms and neck feel heavy. ...

Back Pain......severeFeb 13, 2012
Any suggestions for severe higher back pain? It's around my left shoulder blade and goes into my chest.  I've done the heat and ice, hot bath, Advil, Flexeril, and sleeping in different beds in the house.  Nothing is working and it is literally killing me. Unfortunately I work for a company with very little work so I can't just up and go to the doctor.  Sitting here and working is just too hard when all I want to do is lay down and try to sleep. ...

Bring Our Work Back, Trump!Jun 30, 2017
So I went to the White House website today and sent an email to President Trump regarding the predicament of MTSOs outsourcing OUR jobs to India, Pakistan, and the Philippines.  Couldn't actually include the "What is wrong with outsourcing?" post with this letter as only 2500 characters were allowed, so I did a little explaining and referred him to this website and the post in question.   If we ALL took 5 minutes out of our day to do this, do you think he'll hear us?   ...

As The Primaries Continue, How Do Those OfMar 15, 2016
still haven't had their primary yet feel about having to wait so long to vote?  My state is one of the last, and I feel kind of cheated out of my full choice of candidates.  By the time they make it out here, even more will be gone, and it'll pretty much just be a choice between a delegate-heavy frontrunner and the one remainig candidate in that party.  I wish the delegate thing could be done away with, and that the primaries were held in all states nationwide on the SA ...
