Painful thumb and wrist

Posted: Dec 12, 2011

About five weeks ago I was cleaning my chairs and sofa with a small Bissel cleaner, and really overdid it.  I have been diagnsed with de Quervain's tenosynovitis of the right wrist.   I tried anti-inflammatory medication which only worked for a day, then back to bad pain again.   My doctor started me on a course of prednisone, which I took for ten days to no avail.   I am scheduled for an appointment with a hand specialist.  I know they sometimes do surgery for this condition, and I am wondering if anyone has had this condition and can share their experience.   This truly is one of the most painful things I have ever had.  I am righthanded, and unfortunately I have this conditon in the right wrist.   At times I cannot sign my name.   Doing dishes and showering with one hand is getting old.  Thanks for any info you can share.

Sounds like a clear-cut WC case to me.

What's WC?

Just dawned on me - Christine

Just got what you meant. I hope the specialist can treat this and it never, ever . . . ever comes back!

Just found out I had an injury to my hand as well SM - Going to surgeon

I doubt yours was caused from cleaning your couch! Mine is from my job. Please look into it, as if there is a complication, you don't know what total disability you may have when it's all over.

My injury might not be able to be undone, even with surgery and it scares me to death. I have injuries bilaterally, but very severe in my dominant arm.

Please take care of yourself and your future! Look into what truly caused this injury.
That's what did it - Christine

It truly was caused by cleaning two chairs and then the sofa. All the literature supports the fact that this condition often is caused by repetitive motion. I was cleaning for a few hours, pushing down very hard on the hose to suction up the water. I noticed pain, and about two days later is was terrible. My doctor said the tendons became inflamed and swollen, causing them not to glide freely through the tendon sheath. There is no break in any of the bones of the hand or wrist. Good luck to you, too. I hope you have a resolution to your problem. I am fearing the cortisone shot I'll probably get, as I have heard some horror stories about pain and side effects. Good luck!
But your repetitive motion is typing! Don't you think the cleaning just pushed it over? - Strange!

I mean typing is repetitive motion! I bet you were already inflamed. I don't know, I just have a hard time thinking that cleaning for Bfew hours did it all. I would more suspect that because ofnuour profession, it's chronically inflamed and that just pushed it over the edge, but I'm no doctor! Good luck to you, too!!! This all is horrible.
Don't type anymore - Christine

Quit the Q and don't do transcription anymore. I can't wait for my appointment with the hand specialist. It feels like someone has an ice pick and keeps jabbing it into the side of my wrist. I am wearing a thumb support splint which helps somewhat. I never knew anything could hurt this much! I know now why God gave us two arms and hands. Trying to work with one isn't easy!

Wrist Injection Jan 11, 2012
I had the injection on Monday for tenosynovitis of the wrist.  As most of you indicated, it was painful, but it did not last as long as I thought.   Prior to the appointment I had myself fooled into thinking he would inject the wrist in the snuffbox area.  I guess that was wishful thinking.   I did not look at what he was doing, but when I felt him push on the needle I knew it was going through a much "harder" structure.   He asked me if I heard a "po ...

Wrist Pain, Not CTSDec 25, 2010
I'm once again having wrist pain in my dominant hand which is worse at the end of my shift.  I took a week off to completely rest it and it helps, but it still hurts whenever I most my thumb, at the base into the top of the radius.  Does anyone have this problem?  I had carpal tunnel surgery 10 years ago, but don't have the same numbness as I did before that surgery.  I tried switching my mouse to the left hand, but it still hurts especially whenever I use the space ...

Pain In Wrist And HandJan 26, 2011
For the past year, I have had episodes of pain in my right wrist and hand.  It will flare up and then subside.  I am having a flare up right now.  For the past week or two, my right wrist has been killing me.  I can still type but i cannot write.  Using the mouse really hurts.  I will get shooting pains down my middle and ring fingers.  I can't bend my wrist back at all without pain.  I have been a MT for 4 years.  Could I already have carpal tu ...

Looking For Best Wrist Support For Carpal Tunnel Please...smJan 01, 2011
Can anyone out there recommend a wrist support that actually works while you type?  I don't mind if it's a little expensive, I just need it to allow me to type while giving my wrists the support it desperately needs.  I use one while I sleep but it's too constricting to type with. Okay...going to take some ibuprofen now for this pain:) ...

Bilateral Wrist Pain And SwellingNov 10, 2010
Okay, I've been doing MT work for about 25 years and never had much of a problem with my wrists that a little R&R didn't fix.  Lately, I've been having pain that seems to start in my wrists, causes my wrists and fingers on both hands to swell, and the pain seems to travel up both of my arms to my shoulder region.  It hurts to even reach overhead to change my shirt. Has anyone else experienced this?  I do editing most of the day, which might be why I've ne ...

Trigger ThumbJan 07, 2014
Is there any solution to trigger thumb besides surgery? Over the past month my thumb joint has been kind of "clunking," not never totally locking, and doesn't completely flex. It's slightly painful at times, but not too terribly. I thought maybe a thumb brace would help, but it doesn't. Any suggestions? ...

Do you know to just buddy tape it?  I know they dont do much at doctors and I dont have insurance yet through my MTSO so I'd rather try to deal with it on my own, been icing it. Know What Stands Out Like A Sore Thumb? SmSep 04, 2012
At the RNC the audience was predominantly white (as in I only saw like 3 black folks the whole time), very uptight, filled with suits, speeches had angry undertones, and of course there was the nut throwing incident as well as the physical assault. Now I know it's early, but thus far at the DNC I see a completely diverse group of folks who seem to be happy and excited. I detect no tension. On top of this is the involvement and inclusion of REGULAR PEOPLE in this event including local eve ...

Painful MammogramNov 12, 2010
I had a mammogram a few days ago which was very painful.  The tech asked if I had a high caffeine intake, which unfortunately I do.  She said this can make the test more painful.  I saw on line that if you reduce or eliminate the caffeine intake about a week prior to the test it will help.  I must say it was painful enough to perhaps make me avoid going back next year.  It has been some years since I have had a mammography.  I am glad I went, but it was not a p ...

Painful Feet And BunionsDec 16, 2010
Just wondering what to do about this, as i'm starting to have problems standing and walking for long periods of time.  I want to be conservative a while longer before I have surgery to remove the bunions and realign my toes.  Any shoe recommendations?  Any conservative treatments I may have not heard about?  ...

Mastectomy/reconstruction - How Painful Is This?Feb 24, 2010
I'll be having a mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction soon.  Can anybody tell me how much pain I can expect?  I was back to work after my TVH in 3 days with almost no pain whatsoever, so I generally bounce back fast, and I'm young (42).  Of course I can ask the surgeon when I see him again, but if anybody can fill me in in the meantime, that would be great.  I want to be mentally prepared.        ...

Stiff Joints. Sometimes Painful, Sometimes Not.Apr 15, 2012
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  Sometimes my finger joints, knees, wrists, and ankles get so stiff that I cannot move them unless I pop them.  Sometimes they hurt extremely bad until I pop them, sometimes no pain, and sometimes they just won't pop.  This is something that I have been dealing with for as long as I can remember, so it isn't something that has been caused by the sitting from doing MT or anything like that.  I have had one doctor ...

Knee Swollen, Tight, PainfulOct 18, 2009
Have been having trouble with my knee since about spring of this year.  I had a knee scope ten years ago for some torn cartilage, and the knee did great for the ten years following, but flared up this past spring.  It gets a very tight and full feeling with a big bulge in the back of the knee, and I keep telling the doctor I believe it is a Baker's cyst, but he doesn't suggest anything for it.  He did tell me that is where the fluid goes because it has no place else to g ...
