What type of bread is okay??

Posted: Aug 19, 2012

Hi all,

I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol.

I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white bread.

So, what do I do for bread, at least without breaking the bank? Rye bread is okay, but not all the time. I like to have a sandwich maybe twice a week.

Thanks!

bread - what i use

I am diabetic, type 2, just diagnosed in June and I an going to be controlled hopefully diet and exercise. I have lost about 10 pounds now since June just "being good." My dietician recommended 100% (must be 100%) whole wheat, have at least 2 grams of fiber per slice and around 15 grams of carbs. There is a bread by Sara Lee that is lower calorie that is not too bad and says 45% lower calories on the package. Also my cousin is a diabetic on medications and she recommended the Sara Lee Thin Style Buns and they come in 100% whole wheat or multi-grain. They are 20 grams of carbs but that should be okay and I use them for my occasional sandwich. Just watch the carbs whenever you get something in a package. My dietician recommend 30-45 carbs per meal and I will have bread almost every day. I do feel better with the 10 pounds off and my sugar numbers are coming down some. I still need to be down about 30 pounds where I feel the best, and hopefully can stay off medications for my diabetes.

I don't know if you have heard of it yet or not, the 17 Day Diet. It is really big right now. I have a friend who has been doing this for a while now and has lost lots of weight. She loves it and says it is so easy to do. There are 4 phases to it. You eat a certain way for 17 days, then you can add more foods for another 17 days, then add even more foods for another 17 days, and then there is a "maintenance" phase. Most people lose 10-15 pounds the first 17 days, if they are following it to a T.

I need to change my lifestyle. I've done "diets" where I lose a bunch of weight, only to put it back on when I come back to the real world. A successful "diet" is not one where you simply lose weight, it's where you keep the weight off for years. I've lost 20 so far this way and am not suffering.

I have a friend who lost about 50 pounds 5 years ago and has not gained it or any portion of it back, save for a fluctuation of 5 lbs or so. She's not dieting, she's just eating more healthy and getting 30 minutes of exercise a day.

I lost 40 pounds on Weight Watchers, and the bread - that I use and love is

the Sarah Lee 45-calorie bread...I love the honey whole wheat, I think it's called. Unfortunately, it's not super cheap....I know you said you don't want to break the bank. I buy it at a Sarah Lee outlet store, where they sell items that are either overstock or slightly older. I never get any that are out of date, though....they all still have some "life" left in them. I take it home and freeze half of the loaf so it keeps a little longer. I think I pay about $1.85 per loaf at the outlet store....much less than they charge in the grocery store (I've seen it for over $3 at the grocery).

Good luck to you!

Or you could not eat bread - try it for a while and see

I know. I know. You don't want to stop giving up sandwiches or pasta or ...

Try it for a month and see how much better you feel and how much weight you lose. I bet you lose a lot.

I don't miss bread any more. If I want a ham and cheese sandwich, I put ham and cheese on a plate with some tomato and eat it that way. If I want a chicken salad sandwich I put it on some lettuce and eat it that way.

If you absolutely HAVE to have something baked, try baking bread with coconut flour. There are a ton of recipes out there on the web for cooking with coconut flour. It's good stuff and much, much better for you than wheat.

Thanks... - Trying to be healthy

I actually did attempt to give up bread and did so for 2 months. I just get that craving, and was hoping that multi-grain was the way to go, but then found out that's bad for one's sugar. I tend to use flour tortillas now and then, but I'm thinking that's probably not much better than white bread.

I'm going to try the Sara Lee thing, thanks to the poster who suggested that! I think we might have an outlet store nearby here!

Agree. A "sandwich" is just a way to eat food with your hands - and adds a huge nutritional penalty.

We also add a number of other things (like mayonnaise) when we make sandwiches that make them even worse.

Something else, perhaps more subtle, is that I think sandwiches facilitate overeating - especially the big old honking monsters that we Americans like to concoct! It's too easy to "chow down" on a sandwich compared to something equivalent that you'd eat with some lettuce and half a peach from a plate - with a fork.

I dont eat bread very often, but if I have a sandwich - I eat rye. Not a fan of bread.

If you only eat it every once in a while, it shouldn't really matter if you eat rye or wheat. Its when you eat bread all the time that it can pack on the pounds or become unhealthy.

Try limiting your intake of it. I have found that now that my kids are out of the house I dont buy bread and seldom eat red meat. I hadn't even noticed until I decided I wanted a hamburger one day and realized I hadn't bought bread or hamburger in months. Then I realized I hadn't bought any red meat of any sorts in months.

Thank you - Trying to be Healthy

I've cut back on red meat. We used to have hamburgers once a week. I have no kids, but I have a hubby who loves his burger once a week. Here in FL, we can pretty much grill all year around, so, every other week on "burger night" I swap my burger out for a pile of veggies on the grill. I slice them up, season them, then wrap them up in foil, poke holes in it, and throw it on the grill. They really taste good. I use whatever veggies I have, which is usually green and red peppers, fresh green beans and onions. Sometimes I'll marinate them in Italian salad dressing first for an hour or 2.

Type Of Rolls/bread Do You Serve At Thanksgiving?Nov 24, 2009
I prefer very soft rolls.  I like a certain type from the store that are just cheap little things but they are so good. (probably really bad for me but it's Thanksgiving after all).  I also like Costco's rolls, but the bag is so big.  I've made Pillsbury cresent rolls before but don't want to use the oven any more than I have to.  Do you make your own bisquits, do you use Pillsbury, frozen or just buy off the shelf?  Do you only serve one type? ...

Bread So Cheap At WalmartAug 19, 2010
Please someone telling me I am just being negative. I have started worrying about low prices at Walmart, because of hearing about their trade practices. Today I noticed the usual $2.78 loaf of multigrain bread that is my favorite, is reduced permanently to $2.50. I am wondering who is "taking the hit" for that 28-cent reduction. The bakery companies? Other local grocery stores usually have that bread for $3.50 or so, but often **on sale** at $2.50. Is Walmart's reduction an effort to s ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014
Years ago I loved to make bread and have several favorite recipes. I'm going to give up and get a bread maker.  I see they come with recipes, but I cannot tell if you can use your own recipes in them.  Does anyone have any experience with this.  One of my favorites is a receipe for Pioneer Bread which uses some corn meal.  It is not heavy like rye, which I understand does not work well in machines. Any advice on this would be appreciated.  I am becoming alarmed ab ...

Question About Little Bugs Flying Around BreadNov 15, 2010
Okay, last week I bought 2 sourdough rolls to make a little bowl to put some clam chowder in.  Got home and froze them in the bag they came in.  I took them out last night to thaw out and today I looked at the bag, which was still sealed shut (no holes in the bag anywhere), and I saw what looked like fruit flies (about 5 or 6 or so).  I took them out of the bag and put them on a plate and covered with saran wrap.   So here's my stupid question...are these sourdough rol ...

Anyone Have A Good Lemon Bread/cake RecipeDec 24, 2009
Okay, just made a lemon bread.  It is moist but not as lemony as I would like.  Safeway makes a good lemony cake (or bread) thing.  So moist and lemony and I'd like to make something similar.  This recipe I just made called for 3/4 c. lemon yogurt and 1 tablepoon lemon rind.  It is moist but not a real lemon flavor (faint lemon flavor).   I tried another recipe using a lemon cake and added a box of lemon pudding.  Again, most but not real lemony.   ...

Has Anyone Seen This Type Of Dog Behavior?Oct 14, 2009
Our 10 year old golden retriever, Sam, has started grooming our 7 year old golden, Luke - with a vengeance!  He can literally lie there and lick Luke for up to an hour or two at a time.  Mind you, Luke doesn't mind.  He falls asleep.  Sam will like so hard and long that every once in awhile he will come up for air and just pant, out of breath, and then dive back in.  There does seem to be a rather compulsive component to it.  I'm a little surpris ...

Why Has "conflict" (Jerry Springer Type) TV Become So Pervasive?Feb 18, 2017
They also call it "reality" TV, and as so often happens, reality is beginning to imitate art.  This morning I was interested in watching a program about people who buy houses, renovate and flip them.  What I got to watch was a very obviously ginned up, nasty, crude, continually vulgar fight among the different "partners" as to who would do what, what would be done, how it should be done, and virtually EVERY aspect of the renovation.  These "partners" were shoving each other, cuss ...
