Question about little bugs flying around bread

Posted: Nov 15, 2010

Okay, last week I bought 2 sourdough rolls to make a little bowl to put some clam chowder in.  Got home and froze them in the bag they came in.  I took them out last night to thaw out and today I looked at the bag, which was still sealed shut (no holes in the bag anywhere), and I saw what looked like fruit flies (about 5 or 6 or so).  I took them out of the bag and put them on a plate and covered with saran wrap.

So here's my stupid question...are these sourdough rolls okay to eat?  They smell good and feel fresh, but I just don't know about the little bugs.

;

I would not eat them. - Happy MT Robin

YOu didn't say where you bought them, but if the bugs were inside the wrapping, that to me means that the facility where they were produced had some issues. Personally, I'd toss them.

Thanks - kind of thought that - bad cook

but thought I'd check.

lots of variables:

i don't know where you live...is your heat on? covering the rolls w/ plastic in a warm house can case the critters to come out of hibernation. you might set them outside (or turn off the heat, or refreeze).

was your plan to warm them first, or just put in a can of soup?

i do NOT waste food--ever. and no: i have never had e.coli or any other sort of "food poisoning" (and i have cooked LOTS of food, and occasionally eaten in restaurants).

oh: fruit flies do not frequent bread: their name describes their food: fruit. and "bugs" are protein.

not to disparage your reluctance: both my parents are superb cooks, and i was given "the joy of cooking" as a birthday gift. if you want to learn to cook, it'd be an excellent reference.

that being said, we've had it easy for ever-so long, and been taught by whomever to be scared of everything. worm in my apples?? cut 'em out and give them to the chickens. they're happy, and the apples don't go to waste. i've occasionally (every five years or so) found "critters" in flour. i sift and sift again, then remove "critters." chickies love 'em.

our MT line-rate (vs. employees' hourly rate) aside, hard times are here--not for us MTs alone--and more are to come.

e-mail if you chose; but think on my message. i see so many here frustrated about what we earn. well...we chose (and love) this profession, and accepted what we were offered.

i did. it stinks, and it stinks that MTSOs forget that WE make money for THEM.

Thank you for your reply - see message - bad cook

I live in Oregon. The weather here is cool. My kitchen is probably high 60s temp wise.

I absolutely hate throwing food out. I have not gotten the hang of how to make use of everything but am learning.

We ended up throwing the rolls out which I just cringed at, but these bugs, no matter what I did (moving the rolls or whatever kept finding them. I wrapped them in saran wrap ensuring there were no bugs when I wrapped them and an hour later the bugs were inside the saran wrap (and I moved them to a different part of the kitchen), so I figured maybe they were breeding inside of the bread and coming out (they were sourdough rolls.

I bought a couple cans of new england clam chowder and I was going to cut the bread out of the center then put them in the oven and heat them up to get them a little crispy and then put the soup in them.

When I first saw them on the bread I thought no problem, people eat bugs in the jungle, but when it got worse I thought maybe they laid larva inside the rolls and that kind of grossed me out, so figured I'd just chuck e'm (they cost about $4. and next time make sure I look carefully inside the package to make sure no bugs are there when I buy them. They were frozen in my freezer for about a week, so unsure where the bugs came from.

I agree with you on the hard times. I want to do more conserving of food. Tired of throwing out bad produce or food we don't finish.

Thanks for your message.

I wouldn't eat it. Those bugs obviously came from - eggs, and its likely there -sm

are still more where those came from. It probably wouldn't make you sick, but the gross-out factor would be pretty high.

LOL - I hear you on the gross out factor - bad cook

You should have seen the "gross-out factor" on my DH's face when I told him about the bugs inside the bag. It was funny. I would have just heated them up in the oven anyways - well at least his, I would have told him I wasn't hungry for bread - just kidding LOL.

Big Bugs!Jul 26, 2013
Tonight I saw a large bug on the kitchen floor.  It was black and about 1 1/2 inches long.  It had antennae (sp).  It did not move nearly as fast as a roach.  What could it be??  This happened last year about this time and my landlord got an exterminator in.  Tonight is the first one I saw!  When I threw a towel on it, it kinda fluttered and tried to get away, but again, not lightening fast like a roach.  HELP!! ...

Been Reading A Lot About Bed Bugs, AnyoneSep 21, 2010
any ideas about how to get rid of the creatures.  I don't have them here personally but now I am totally freaked out and paranoid.  I keep reading about people bringing them home from vacation and that they are getting to be an epidemic in this country.  What do we do if we do get them?  How do you kill them?  Anyone know anything more about this - I totally dislike bugs.  I hate to kill any of them but ... ...

Flying Car A Step Closer To RealityJun 30, 2010
Weird-looking cars are a dime a dozen. Far less common are weird-looking cars that can also fly AND have approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, as far as we know, there's only one of those babies: The Terrafugia Transition. The private aircraft/funky-looking car has been in the news before. But the recent announcement that it's going into production sparked mega-searches on the Web. Almost immediately, online lookups for "terrafugia transition" and "terrafug ...

Soggy BreadApr 09, 2011
Anyone know how to prevent my bread from getting soggy in my lunch?  I pack a lunch in a regular insulated lunch bag, using an ice pack to keep my stuff cool.  It doesn't seem to matter what kind of sandwich I pack or whether or not I leave my sandwich unassembled, my bread is soggy when I take it out of the plastic bag.  If I don't put in a plastic bag, it gets dry.  Any suggestions? ...

What Type Of Bread Is Okay??Aug 19, 2012
Hi all, I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol. I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white ...

Bread So Cheap At WalmartAug 19, 2010
Please someone telling me I am just being negative. I have started worrying about low prices at Walmart, because of hearing about their trade practices. Today I noticed the usual $2.78 loaf of multigrain bread that is my favorite, is reduced permanently to $2.50. I am wondering who is "taking the hit" for that 28-cent reduction. The bakery companies? Other local grocery stores usually have that bread for $3.50 or so, but often **on sale** at $2.50. Is Walmart's reduction an effort to s ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014

Type Of Rolls/bread Do You Serve At Thanksgiving?Nov 24, 2009

Anyone Have A Good Lemon Bread/cake RecipeDec 24, 2009
Okay, just made a lemon bread.  It is moist but not as lemony as I would like.  Safeway makes a good lemony cake (or bread) thing.  So moist and lemony and I'd like to make something similar.  This recipe I just made called for 3/4 c. lemon yogurt and 1 tablepoon lemon rind.  It is moist but not a real lemon flavor (faint lemon flavor).   I tried another recipe using a lemon cake and added a box of lemon pudding.  Again, most but not real lemony.   ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
