Bread Machines

Posted: Feb 23, 2012

Good morning!  I am looking into purchasing a bread machine and wonder if anyone on this board has recommendations for a particular brand and/or your experience with it or perhaps a clunker to avoid.   Advice much appreciated!

A suggestion - shipwrecked

I'm watching carbs, so I've put my bread machine away for a while and don't remember the brand. One thing I can suggest, though, is to get one that makes large loaves. If I remember correctly, they come making loaves in three sizes - maybe 1, 1-1/2, and 2 pounds.

You'll have fun with it! Makes great pizza dough too.

Thank you so much for your suggestion! It is an important one. I definitely need one that makes larger loaves as there are 5 in my family. I have also noticed some brands with low-carb options which I will be looking into as well!

You've sent me off to google! Low-carb options? Hmmm!

There's a great series of bread machine recipe books, maybe 5-8 books. You can google Nitty Gritty Bread Machine books and probably get them dirt cheap at Amazon (buy it used).

Okay, now you're inspiring me!
Try garage sales - Happy MT Robin

I have a bread machine that I love that is made by Oster. It was at Wal Mart for about $60.00. My sister had a perfectly good bread machine that she put in my garage sale this summer for $10. She just realized that she was eating way too much of the stuff when it came out warm and yummy.

Another thing you might check for is the way the loaf is set up - meaning some of the bread machines have the loaf go fairly upright, so you have the top crust at the short end, if that makes sense. The one I have has the loaf going the long way so it looks more like a traditional loaf of bread.

Here's a site where I've gotten several good recipes from:

I live above 5000 sea level, so I had to make adjustments a little bit, but the recipes I've tried here are pretty good.

You can make gluten-free bread - MT

I am low-carb also and wanting to give mine away. Not much of a garage sale person. I used to make gluten-free bread in mine, used the bread mix I found in the health food store, it was pretty good, strange ingredients, potato starch, xantham gum, but the bread was good.

Thank you all for your informative replies! Thank you Zo-Zo for your input. I have read many mixed reviews but with that baking track record, I must say, I will probably purchase the Zo.

Thank you for your kind responses. It is nice to see this board isn't all negative. I hope you all have a beautiful day! The gift of your taking the time to respond to my question is truly appreciated!

I've had mine for 20 years! I still make bread with it 2-3 times a week. Perfect every time. Can't get belts for it anymore, though, but you can find the occasional model BBCC S15 on eBay. A little power surfing found me a great website that sells replacement drive belts for every machine known to Woman.

My little workhorse makes the "tall" loaves, but I'm still going to drive it until the wheels fall off. When the time comes for a new one, it will be another Zo. Don't need to look at any other brand. The new ones make a "long" loaf; looks more like a traditional loaf that you would bake and has 2 paddles. For now, I love my Baby Girl Zoey.

Does Anyone Know About Steno MachinesMay 09, 2014
I have a friend who wants to get into court reporting.  She's looking at steno machines which can be pretty pricey (some over 1K, many in the hundreds).  She saw some on E-bay or some other site that people were bidding on around $30 to 50 or so, but asked me if I knew anything about them, like why so cheap, do the machines wear out?  I didn't know but thought I'd ask here.  Does anyone know? ...

Any Users Of Sewing Machines Out There?Apr 17, 2014
I have an approximately 15 year old sewing machine I picked up in a lawn sale.  There is no user's manual with it.   It worked great for a while, but now it's alternately knotting and leaving loops on the underside of the cloth.  Any idea if this is an easy fix?  Or should I take it to a repair shop?  I don't want to spend a bunch to fix it if it's something I could do myself.   ...

Soggy BreadApr 09, 2011
Anyone know how to prevent my bread from getting soggy in my lunch?  I pack a lunch in a regular insulated lunch bag, using an ice pack to keep my stuff cool.  It doesn't seem to matter what kind of sandwich I pack or whether or not I leave my sandwich unassembled, my bread is soggy when I take it out of the plastic bag.  If I don't put in a plastic bag, it gets dry.  Any suggestions? ...

What Type Of Bread Is Okay??Aug 19, 2012
Hi all, I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol. I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white ...

Bread So Cheap At WalmartAug 19, 2010
Please someone telling me I am just being negative. I have started worrying about low prices at Walmart, because of hearing about their trade practices. Today I noticed the usual $2.78 loaf of multigrain bread that is my favorite, is reduced permanently to $2.50. I am wondering who is "taking the hit" for that 28-cent reduction. The bakery companies? Other local grocery stores usually have that bread for $3.50 or so, but often **on sale** at $2.50. Is Walmart's reduction an effort to s ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014
Years ago I loved to make bread and have several favorite recipes. I'm going to give up and get a bread maker.  I see they come with recipes, but I cannot tell if you can use your own recipes in them.  Does anyone have any experience with this.  One of my favorites is a receipe for Pioneer Bread which uses some corn meal.  It is not heavy like rye, which I understand does not work well in machines. Any advice on this would be appreciated.  I am becoming alarmed ab ...

Question About Little Bugs Flying Around BreadNov 15, 2010
Okay, last week I bought 2 sourdough rolls to make a little bowl to put some clam chowder in.  Got home and froze them in the bag they came in.  I took them out last night to thaw out and today I looked at the bag, which was still sealed shut (no holes in the bag anywhere), and I saw what looked like fruit flies (about 5 or 6 or so).  I took them out of the bag and put them on a plate and covered with saran wrap.   So here's my stupid question...are these sourdough rol ...

Anyone Have A Good Lemon Bread/cake RecipeDec 24, 2009
Okay, just made a lemon bread.  It is moist but not as lemony as I would like.  Safeway makes a good lemony cake (or bread) thing.  So moist and lemony and I'd like to make something similar.  This recipe I just made called for 3/4 c. lemon yogurt and 1 tablepoon lemon rind.  It is moist but not a real lemon flavor (faint lemon flavor).   I tried another recipe using a lemon cake and added a box of lemon pudding.  Again, most but not real lemony.   ...
