Has anyone seen this type of dog behavior?

Our 10 year old golden retriever, Sam, has started grooming our 7 year old golden, Luke - with a vengeance! He can literally lie there and lick Luke for up to an hour or two at a time. Mind you, Luke doesn't mind. He falls asleep. Sam will like so hard and long that every once in awhile he will come up for air and just pant, out of breath, and then dive back in. There does seem to be a rather compulsive component to it. I'm a little surprised he doesn't have hairballs, but his digestive tract seems to be working okay. It's not like they're left alone for long periods of time - we both work at home and there's almost always someone here. I'm not really concerned, more curious if anyone else has seen this.

I would at least call your vet - its compulsive behavior at the very least - and could very well be a sign of something else.

What's abnormal is the length of time he's doing it - possibly something missing in his diet - seriously.

the first thought that came to mind -- pure speculation mind you -- is of dogs that can detect cancer in people. I just wonder if your older dog is sensing a health issue in the younger one. or maybe an obsessive-compulsive disorder...

It could be there is something in the other dogs coat he is ingesting that is either attractive to him - or his system is craving.

Either way, he is doing it too much - to the point of panting. I hope the OP calls the vet ;)

As a matter of fact, neither of those scenarios had occurred to me. Luke does have a tumor of some kind on his eyelid which we have scheduled to be surgically removed soon. But I tend to think it might be the dietary problem (although they both eat the same dog food), but he has been known to lick the rug with almost as much vigor. I guess a call to the vet is in order.

I always figured that maybe it was because she doesn't have the attention from us that she had before the kids came and so she is just transferring it to the boxer. Maybe not, because she'll go nuts on my flip flops, as well. At any rate, whatever it is, she is a 13-year-old dog and I figure I will just let her live out her years in peace.

Only he would start grooming one of us; working on a bare arm or leg, also with a vengeance. Needless to say, we wouldn't let him keep it up, but it did seem to have a compulsive aspect to it. If you tried to move, he would use his paw to try to keep you still.

I have no advice to offer, though. He was an older dog by the time he started that behavior and he's gone now.

so watch. Cat lets her for about 10 second then the hissing starts and the dog backs off. The cat has a strange habit of licking feathers, will sit there for ages grooming/licking it, and plastic grocery bags. Of course she cleans herself thouroughly a couple times a day as well. -- Why don't you call your vet and ask if it may be a sign of something or just a peculiar quirk your dog has developed, some repressed instinct coming to light or something.

My boyfriend is often displeased with my behavior and will tell me how I messed up and how he wants me to behave. I prefer very soft rolls. I like a certain type from the store that are just cheap little things but they are so good. (probably really bad for me but it's Thanksgiving after all). Somehow I got into the habit of doing this years ago and now I can't type with both feet on the ground anymore.
