What type of names do you give your animals?

Posted: Oct 21, 2009

Since you were a kid to present time, what type of names do you tend to give your animals?

Human or animal style names or both?
;

Ours have been human names. - sm

Mickey, Allie and Maggie.

I agree, human names. - landroverlady

The best part is when you run into someone with your pet's name! LOL

Currently mine are: Dogs: Zydrunas, Eliza, Hazel. Cats: Anderson, Eleanor, Annie, Nick, Tabitha.
Cornsnake: Kenny. Hedgehog: Charlotte
I have also had Oliver, Benjamin, Cory, Sydney, Luke, Lucy, Lillian, Dorothy.

Descriptive and fun names - jm

Parrot named Beebee (that's the sound he used to always make).

Dogs named: Sunday's Lady, Cinnamon.

Cats names: Puff puff kitty, goldilocks, blackie, spaz, and noodles.

Would never name them human names, just like I would never name my child puff puff or spaz. Don't know why because I treat them like they are human. I just think they deserve unique names.

Our dog is named Dobby after the house elf in - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Harry Potter and our cats were named after Felix Unger and Oscar Madison on the Odd Couple.

Animal names - Silly Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
For the most part, our animals have all had "cute" names:
Cats: Snowball, Shaggy, Bruno, Mittens, Mojo
Dogs: Jingles, Ninja, Lil Bit
Our current dog has a human name - Callie. She came to us with that name so we left it alone.

It depends on the animal's personality - Happy MT Robin

And also where I got the animal from. Many of mine already had names - either from the previous owner or from the shelter. Joe was named by his previous owner and I kept the name. He's only Joe when he's in trouble, though. The rest of the time he's Monkey Man. Mine are all cats, by the way.

Lucky came to live with me on 07/07/07 and he was my seventh cat. The name just sort of fit. Honey was abused and frightened when she came to me and the name Honey just popped into my brain. Buddy was the same way. He was Jellybean at the shelter and when I got him home he told me his name really was Buddy.

I have Tigger, Joe, Duchess, Sasha, Lucky, Sofia, Honey, Buddy and Starr.

I think I like Buddy! - Silly Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
He must have been very happy to go home with you for him to tell you his real name. I love my kitties very much too!!

My grandparent had a chi-wowa named Lil Bit - jm

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry don't know how to spell chi-wowa (chijuaja?). Funny you have a dog named that too. What kind of dog is yours.

gosh, my DHs family had a beagle named Lil Bit - Chihuahua

Both - JSS

We start off with a human name but then the animal gets a more descriptive lovable nickname that fits them uniquely.

Animal Names - Smitty

[ In Reply To ..]
Dogs - Gus and Lenny
Cats - Fred, Lily, Benny, Gary

Gary! That's very cute. : ) .....sm - elaine

Gary for a cat is very cute! N/M - lrlady

I have written before about my cats. I have 3. Hubs brought home 2 for me after checking to see if ok with me. They are tuxedo brothers. One is a large, sweetheart of a boy and hubs named him Friskie (told you not taking responsibility) and his brother is Tiger. Tiger is my gay son and I really think autistic along with that. He is scared of hubby and hisses and runs from him and tries to do abnormal things with his own brother. I have another rescue and I named her, Gina LaBella (she is my Italian kitty). I should have named her Taz (short for Tazmananian devil) because she stays in trouble most of the time, on the counters, on the tables, etc., etc. but I love all 3 dearly and they give me so much pleasure.

Puppy and Kittens - TMEFG

[ In Reply To ..]
Our Basset hound puppy is named Rossi after a MotoGP racer, Valentino Rossi. Our two kittens are named Kit Kat and Bashful.

I have also had a Boston terrier named Archie and a blood hound named Pepsi.

Fish (betas...2 male, 1 female) have been Phil, Ghetto Fabulous (Ghetto for short), and Abby.

A bit of both. - FlaMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Charlie (2x), Beau, Rex, Lady (all dogs), Snoopy (cockatiel) and Mucci (hamster) while growing up.

Disney, Clarabelle, Shelby, Lili, and Ceasar as an adult.

Depends in this family who named them :) sm - Frannie

[ In Reply To ..]
We have a cat named "squirrel" thanks to my daughter who was 3 at the time.

One dog named Didi, one named Priscilla (P for short), one named Mia Bella and one named Nibbler (done by my son).

Love all of them but people think I am nuts when they ask their names when I come to "nibbler."

Nibbler's not so bad - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
I had a cat that a roommate named Flipper because every time you went to touch him he flipped over on his back so you could rub his tummy.

Have gone both ways on names - sm - Laura E.

[ In Reply To ..]
Cat -- Kitty (official name is Socks)

Dogs ---
Maggie (short for Magnolia)
Slade -(renamed by adoption org, originally was Spade but they thought Slade was more politically correct)
Bree
Shea
Brandy
Shelby
Candy
Pepper
Tara
Cara
Bandit

Birds --
We had 2 cockatiels we named Sonny and Cher.

I have also had 4 ferrets but for some reason I cannot remember what I named 3 of them. The first one was named in relation to it coming out and attacking my sneakers and untying them, 2nd regarding her musk as she was not descented, #3 have no clue, and # 4 my DH named Missy and she was my last one, guess have lost too many brain cells since 1987 when I got my first one to remember their names. My last one died in 2001 at the ripe old age of 6.

Kids have hamsters too, but not too inventive on names, Fluffy, Midnight, Panda, Panda 2.

Getting a new dog (in theory) in March, either yellow lab or a golden retriever, DH promised DD she could get a dog for her 10th birthday, not looking forward to that as we already have 2 now, 8 and 6-y/o. Gonna check the local shelter first as I have her leaning towards a mutt but if that does not fly will go to the breeder we got our chocolate lab from. Half of our dogs have been rescue dogs, other half purebred. Right now we have one of each.

I have geckos... - CrankyBeach

[ In Reply To ..]
... these are the only pets I have had full control of, and given names to. They are Firefly, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Inara, and The Spook.

I had thought originally that The Spook would be a temporary name, and I'd think of something else later, but he has never lost his total freaked-out wild-child spaz personality. He gives new meaning to the term "Holy leapin' lizards, Batman!" He's afraid of everything, including food that doesn't move. Food that does move? Forget it. He hides. He cowers. So he remains The Spook, and he's a very handsome little fellow.

My family went about 50/50 on people versus other names for pets. Just a few:

Dogs:
Cindy
Anabel
Scotty
Star
The Smidge
Doodle
Sim
Nicky
Bonzo

Cats:
Millicent
Tamara
Cricket
Graybin
Kihara
Toes
Tiny (that one was an enormous Maine Coon)
Sophie

Love the names, from another Firefly fan - Happy MT Robin

Love the names of the geckos!

If The Spook were female, she'd be River. - CrankyBeach

Dogs named after boss and his wife - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
We had rescued 2 very sickly, scruffy puppies and could not think of names for them. They were male and female So I named them after my boss and his wife. Fortunately they are very cool people and were not offended, but rather thought it was funny and still to this day ask how they are doing even though it's been close to 20 years and those dogs are long gone.

Love Animals But Do Not Know What To DoMar 03, 2014
My neighbor recently has added to her pets, getting a new cat. I know her other cat, I have seen it sometimes on my patio but pretty much keeps to itself. The new cat runs to my door every time my husband comes home, really wants to come in, very sweet and affectionate. The other night I started out after 8 going to the store and the cat was extermely close to my garage, instead of being scared the cat was trying to go into the garage. When I first saw the cat I posted as to who it bel ...

Re: Love Animals More Than PeopleNov 12, 2012
I feel kind of the same way. I fall to pieces when I see animals hurting, but it does not affect me as much when I see people hurting. If I see a story about animal abuse, I cannot bear to look at it or read about it, but I have a safe curiosity if it is about a person being abused. I'm not alone in feeling this way, and I think more people feel this way than let on. Those who say they care about people more than animals, or who are defiant in humans inherent value compared to anim ...

Steiff Stuffed AnimalsMay 27, 2017
Hello, All- I've inherited about 30-40 Steiff stuffed animals. I do know they can be valuable, but am having trouble figuring out how to sell them to someone reputable. I am not interested in doing online auctions, but I am interested in at least finding out what they are worth. No matter what kind of Internet search I do, I end up going around in circles, some leading me to Ebay, others leading me to appraisal ads, yet others to Pintrest, telling me a lot of nothing. I know that EBa ...

Travel Bans Used With Good Success To Control Outbreaks Of Diseases In AnimalsOct 17, 2014
It's called a "stand-still" order, and it's one of the FIRST steps taken by agricultural authorities with the very first or even suspected discovery of a case of certain animal diseases.  No animals are allowed to be transported in or out of the "stand-still" order area.  Now, I'm quite sure that human epidemiologists are perfectly aware both of this practice and of its effectiveness.  So there's something else going on here when it comes to implementing trave ...

Has Anyone Seen This Type Of Dog Behavior?Oct 14, 2009
Our 10 year old golden retriever, Sam, has started grooming our 7 year old golden, Luke - with a vengeance!  He can literally lie there and lick Luke for up to an hour or two at a time.  Mind you, Luke doesn't mind.  He falls asleep.  Sam will like so hard and long that every once in awhile he will come up for air and just pant, out of breath, and then dive back in.  There does seem to be a rather compulsive component to it.  I'm a little surpris ...

What Type Of Bread Is Okay??Aug 19, 2012
Hi all, I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol. I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white ...

Tech-type QuestionsJul 16, 2016
I posted earflier about how my local cable TV/internet/telephone company started blocking TV channels unless you rent a "box" from them.  I lost my temper and broke my bundle.  I cancelled TV and phone, ordered Direct TV, moved my phone # to a tracfone, and left internet intact because it's fast and high quality. It turns out that Direct TV couldn't get a "line of sight" to their satellite and so couldn't install.  I called Dish Network, and they're supposed t ...

Pet Peeves About Names?Jul 23, 2010
I understand wanting to have a name that is different. My DD was born during the time when Jennifer was the most popular name. She ran around with a group of girls in her classroom that were called The Jennifers. I have to say that all four of my kids have names that were popular at the time, Jennifer, Kevin, Michael, and William. We didn't plan that, it just happened. And there are times that I wish they had names that weren't as common place, even though I really still like the names ...
