Vacuum cleaner opinion

Posted: May 19, 2014

My vacuum cleaner literally bit the dust last night.  It lived a long life.  But in looking at new ones most are very pricey!  I have pets so I don't know if a moderately priced one would work but if I don't get one soon I'll be wearing my own fur coat!!  Any suggestions??

I can tell you what NOT to buy - Anon

Do NOT buy a Sears Progressive upright. It's the biggest piece of crap I've ever gotten. Within the first year, 3 parts had to be replaced because they broke. After the warranty was up, I had to get a new wheel. It doesn't roll because they made it differently for the newer models, and the rubber part of the wheel rubs against part of the vacuum. My hoses are duct taped together. This was voted as "#1 Best Buy" on Consumer Reports the year I got it, which is why I got that particular one.

I also have pets and have been looking for a new vacuum (but a canister this time as we no longer have carpet). My mom always had Eureka vacuums, and they lasted forever without problems.

I have a Dyson and I LOVE it. - Great for pet hair! n/m

Carpet or bare floors? - What is your budget?

[ In Reply To ..]
I was in the market for a vacuum not that long ago. I have all bare floors.

If you have carpet and have the $$, Dyson's are great. I had one when I had carpet and it was fabulous. My only issue with it was because it was an upright it didn't get under stuff very well and the "flat" attachment didn't work that great. I had the "animal" version of the Dyson and it would suck the white off rice.

After I converted to tile floor, though, the Dyson wasn't that great. I shopped around and looked at a lot of different options and settled on a $130 Bissel from Lowe's. It's very, very basic but because it's designed for bare floors, it does not have beater bars, so nothing to get hair and stuff wrapped around. It's a canister and it's light and works really well. It's not the best vacuum on the market, but it works well enough for 9 cats and their fur.

We have 4 large golden retrievers in our home. We just bought a Dyson DC41 animal complete about 6 months ago and I love it! We have both carpet and wood floors and it works beautifully on both.

Walmart has Bissell Uprights... - SmileyChica

for a decent price. They are the wind tunnel models. For about $80 (and some much less), you can get a pet one that has different floor heights, and what I like (with a big dog) is that the filters are washable, as is the easy to empty dirt/hair canister. Some have retractable cords, and mine has a brush tool attachment that works really well for pet hair on upholstery. I figured if it broke within the first month it was only $80 or less. I've had it a few months, and it is going strong.

Hoover and Kenmore got the best marks. I just got a Kenmore Progressive for my mom. It's supposed to be good on pet hair.

I've had 3 Bissells over the last 12 years, and they worked well enough. One was bagless, and I liked that especially well, but recently I decided to replace it because I didn't think my carpets looked clean. I went to Walmart and spent more than an hour examining each vacuum, comparing all the features. I was pretty well sold on another Bissell. Then a salesperson recommended the Dirt Devil with pet hair brush attachment. I figured maybe it was time to try a different brand. It was only ~$60, so I figured what the heck.

The first time I vacuumed with the Dirt Devil, I almost DIED at how much dirt came from my carpet. It was revolting. The carpet is only 3 years old, and a lot of areas haven't even been walked on, but it was AMAZING what was in there.

Here are some cool features: It's a very lightweight, bagless machine. The suction is consistent and very, very strong. The entire device that captures the dirt is removable and can be taken apart and everything washed. The filter, after being washed, has to dry for 24 hours before being reinserted, so I bought a few more filters online...while the one is drying, I just pop another one in so I don't have to wait. The pet hair attachment has a rotating brush, so it really cleans deeply (not just suction). I have a tiny Yorkie, so not much hair, but it was nice to give all my furniture a going-over.

I'm simply delighted. This was a great investment. When I get a bad dictator, I just vacuum to release the tension. :)

...a good carpet rake.  It will pick up the pet hair AND the human hair (my daughter and I both have long, thick hair) that does a number on the rotating/spinning brushes on even the priciest of vacuums.  Spend $16 and save a LOT of $ and hassel in the end.

I have a small dog who sheds and I have very long hair and it's a battle every week to get it all out of the carpets, esp the dog's hair now that he's shedding his winter coat. I'm now on a mission to find one of these things!

Electrolux - wx

I have pets also and been very happy with an Electrolux canister vacuum that I got about 5 years ago at Amazon for around $200. I have the "Harmony" model, which I believe the upgrade is called Electrolux UltraSilencer® Canister Vacuum, EL6986A, and costs around $210. There are lots of reviews on it there as well.

Electrolux - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
I have an Electrolux Sanitaire and LOVE IT! Not expensive, either. My housekeeper and I went to a vacuum store here in the city and just for fun I tried a Miele (that cost $1500!) to see what it was like--it was like driving a tank. Then the shop person suggested the Electrolux Sanitaire. It was under $200.00 and is the best darned vacuum I have ever had.

Panasonic - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
When I had all carpets, I had an upright panasonic. What I liked best about this particular upright is that it wasn't cumbersome to switch to floor attachments. Some of them, you have to go through all sorts of undoing, applying. The Panasonic, it's just right there ready to go after you put the attachments on. You can probably get one in the $100 range. Mine lasted for years and years. In fact, I ended up getting rid of it because we were moving and the house had central vacuum in it.

FYI about Consumer Reports. I pay no attention to them. My husband is in retail, and one minute Consumer says one thing is best, the next another one, when the product hadn't even changed. I think they're paid off or something. Go by people recommendations, not Consumer Reports.

Simplicity - The sewing machine maker

[ In Reply To ..]
I got my first one in 1986, and it lasted until 2005, with one minor repair/tune-up in that time.

I replaced it in 2005 with another Simplicity that is still running like new with no repairs or replacement parts as of yet.

The first one was a wedding gift, so I don't know how much it cost. The second was in the $300-400 range. Pricey, yes, and worth every dollar.

I purchased it from a specialty Vacuum & Sewing Machine Shop (sells, services, and repairs) but you might be able to find it for less at Target or similar, or maybe even a used one on Craigslist.

Ebay a few years back. They were selling these high-end Royal Powercast uprights for under $100(MRSP $700). I had 3 cats at the time and that vacuum was amazing at getting every bit of dander and dust.
Between my Royals (3) and my Bissell steamer, I keep the house pretty clean. I have the attachment set also for the Powercast.

I think one of the less talked about appeals of Donald Trump is anti-intellectualism as much as anything else.  His vocabulary has been described as juvenile which I imagine is about the same level as many of his followers.  They are tired of someone with a superior education talking down to them.  They understand Trump and don't have to open a dictionary or educate themselves to know what he's saying.   ...
