Getting second opinion recent eye surgery

Posted: Mar 22, 2013

I decided to contact one of the managers where I had my cataract surgery about 4 weeks ago now as striving to see what other options might be open for me. Needless to say I do not have any desire to return to the original surgeon, not that he failed but with his flaring up about a perfectly innocent comment from me, will not trust him in going forward with any tweeking that might need to be done. I have an appointment to see the manager on Monday. I like to speak face to face with a person, not that I am trying to get him in any trouble but she tells me they have 14 ophthalmologists there so will wait and see what she says. I want a second opinion, hopefully can get this issue resolved soon. ;

Well I wouldn't see an ophthalmologist at the same place! - sm

Go to a completely different establishment and get an opinion. If you go to the same place, then IF there was a problem, it is possible that another doctor would cover the first doctor's butt and you wouldn't have an answer. If you have a problem there, go somewhere else.

I am still going for postop visits - Tired

So that would be changing horses in the middle of the stream. Will talk with the manager on Monday and see what comes with that. I will definitely state my concerns and yes the thought has gone through my mind exactly what you have said. Thanks.

seeing someone in the same practice is not a second opinion - sm

...getting a second opinion *is* changing horses in the middle of the stream. It's fine to change physicians and see someone else in the same practice; don't for a second think that that is a second opinion.
I wonder how many physicians want to accept you as a - patient if still under another's care?
[ In Reply To ..]
I have not finished up the aftercare. Like I said, will wait and see what comments I receive on Monday.
Hopefully you won't find yourself in the same - sm

situation as Elaine from Seinfeld who wanted to go to different doctors and her records kept following her and the doctor wrote something about her. LOL.

Really, I wish you all the best of luck. I just wouldn't mention your friend at all, I'd just get his/her opinion on your eye.
If I had known this physician would get bent out of - joint on my mentioning

what my friend said, who is 40 years younger than me, who is not in the medical field, who was not called upon by me to give a learned opinion and who incidentally said about seeing something in the eye and being so touchy as he is, I would not have knowingly said such a minor thing to him then. He needs a much stronger exterior. I care not that he is a perfectionist. I remember years ago when I did this job and thought myself as being an excellent MTer bordering on perfection but now with the work received in, how in the world can you make a perfect report out of it? The same thing really applies to my eyes. Have never had perfect, do you think I would expect now? The doctor was out of line totally. I am making no apology for my behavior, unlike him.
Okay here are my thoughts - mom

What's done is done. As my grandma used to say "no use in crying over spilled milk".

Now...you really need to move on with this. You keep trying to justify telling him what your friend said, your friend looked, your friend has perfect vision, your friend, your friend, your friend.

Now its at a point where who cares what your friend said or if your friend looked, or that she has good vision, or that you even have a friend. What's done is done. You can't go back and change it. Now you have to move forward. Anytime anyone gives you advice you come back in the defensive mode. You really do need to get over that part of this.

The way your eye doctor treated you was horrible. He should have never said what he did. He apologized. I would just never go back to see him. Some docs just have a bad bedside manner. No excuse, but they do and they won't change. About 20 years ago I used to type for a doctor who dealt with many patients at the end of their life. My grandmother happened to be one of his patients. I was visiting her when she was in the hospital and he came to see how she was doing (she was days away from dying). He told her. "I'm not going to be here over the weekend. Dr. so-n-so will be covering for me, but I don't expect you to live past 4:00 tomorrow". I was shocked beyond words (later found out from coworkers he is like that, blunt! and boy was that blunt!). Grandma was one tough girl. She looked at me and said oh yeah, I'll teach him. She lived an extra 4 days so she could prove him wrong. LOL

I think my point is sometimes doctors just don't have people skills and that's what it sounds like with yours. It's awful he said what he did, but he apologized and now it's time to move on. Don't keep bringing your friend up, just go and see another doctor and discuss the issue that directly affects you without all the external interference.

Just time to move on girl. Wish you the best of luck.
For a doctor to say something like that to a member of - your family is so crude

and just a complete a.... I was replying to the person above and not making excuses nor being defensive. I have no idea what makes a doctor, such as the one "attending" your g'mother and that is used very loosely, have the nerve or gall to think they can say whatever they want and it should be ok with everyone. If they had the exact second when someone's life was ending what gives them the decision to make that call, such a horrible thing to do to another human being. I don’t think it is left to them, as in what your grandmother said. Shame on that person.

second opinion s/m - don't ask don't tell

So, how did ya make out on Monday?

Talked with the manager and my concerns - and not wanting to return

[ In Reply To ..]
to see him again as he apparently has some type of issue with me. She said could see the male ophthalmologist who started the clinic (they have about 7 different doctors there) and came home, about an hour and a half later got call from a female doctor asking me would I return and see both her and the same physician together who had done the surgery, would that be ok with me and I said, no it would not. I made myself very clear on my visit that morning that I was not returning to him. Bottom line is have another appointment with the follow up doctor we talked about in the meeting Monday.

Suggest googling "high conflict person" - sm

High Conflict Institute has some free downloads about it.

Fits the situation.

Actually just changing doctors was the answer - Tired

Just got back from a second opinion this morning and what an extremely nice visit. I first saw the intern of the new doctor and then the doctor, so much was explained to me about the eyes of a person that has had Lasik (as I did years ago) falling into a different category than just having a cataract removed. This morning was a tremendously good experience and thank goodness I made the steps to get this done. After that had some prescription sunglasses ordered and the people there so personable. Great day overall!

Surgery/WorkMay 30, 2012
I am having upcoming surgery and do not want to use what little bit of sick time I have (because then I'm in a pickle if I get the flu or something).  I inquired if I could use a few vacation days and then have a few off unpaid if needed (because I often use vacation days for necessary things rather than something pleasant).  I was told I could either go the FMLA route and will have to eat up any sick time I have or have to use all vacation time, which will wipe mine out. Stressing About Surgery, Not For The UsualAug 07, 2013
So I went to the orthopedist in May, had xray of my shoulder. At that time it was popping quite a bit and hurting (hurting that is until I got to the office, but you know how that is). Bottom line, xray done, doctor studied for a minute (could see his scanning as he was directly outside the room pondering the radiograph). He said you can just watch and if it should become more painful then surgery. Ok so it got worse over these few months. Am trying to sit operation up, getting okay from PCP (to ...
