Need opinion on skateboarding.

Posted: Dec 2, 2014

We live in a development and the streets are dedicated township streets and public roads.  We have some kids now that go into the middle of the street and do all these tricks on these skateboards and of course the cars are all over the place to avoid them.  Also, you can hear them constantly jumping up and down out there for hours at a time almost every day after school or all day when they dont have school.  You can imagine how that sounds sitting here trying to work with all that noise.  It is actually illegal to be on that street and I did talk to the township and they said they have had this problems in other developments and the only thing that worked was having the police involved which I really hate to do.  Not sure but I am sick of listening to this every single day.  We asked them to quiet down but you might as well talk to the wall.  I think we only talked to them once and that was about it.  What would you suggest.  No sense trying to talk to the mother because that is useless.  My husband works late shift and he can hardly sleep with all this banging around out there.

there's nothing wrong with talking to the police - sm

It's not like they're going to go out and arrest the skaters. They police are there to enforce community rules. It may well be that kids are allowed to play in the streets. If that's the case, move to a place of like-minded people where you have control. Living in a development means living with kids and people.

It is illegal to skateboard on these streets. As well - PAMT

this place has an HOA and they are not to skateboard in here at all. I have seen those skateboards roll right into cars parked along the street and underneath them and then they look around to make sure no one sees them. Most people don't want their kids playing in traffic as this is a busy street here with a constant stream of cars since this is a big development. We don't care if they board but they just keep jumping up and down constantly hour after hour.

There are worse things - x

I get that it's loud and maybe annoying. Get a noise-cancelling headset. They're great!! As far as them being annoying when you aren't working, there are far worse things that these kids could be doing.

Count your blessings. These kids are outside in the sun, getting some exericse, and having fun without drugs and alcohol and gangs, etc., etc.

When my kids were little we lived across the street from a vacant lot and they used to go over there for hours digging in the dirt, making tracks to ride their bikes on with jumps and all kinds of things. They had a blast! And then one elderly lady complained because she was concerned they would get hurt and we'd sue the property owner (who had given us permission to use the property)and she made our lives miserable from that moment on. We actually sold our house and moved because of her.

Don't be the old lady in my story (I'm not saying you're old). Just look at it from the eyes of those kids and those parents. So many kids spend every waking hour playing video games, partying, sitting around watching television.

Instead, show these kids some interest in what they're doing. You'd be amazed at how open they'll be to you if you just show that you care instead of being that neighbor who always yells at them. And I bet when they see you drive down the street, after you've gotten a relationship of some sort with them, that they'll get out of the way. If they don't, you'll have that relationship so when you go out and talk to them and maybe bring them a candycane or some homemade cookies, you can ask them if they could do you a favor and move out of the way of cars when they drive by because you're concerned for their safety. I bet in no time at all you'll even have those same boys helping you bring in your groceries and asking if you need your driveway shoveled in the winter. At least, that's the experience we had at our new house when the kind elderly gentleman next door took an interest in my sons bicycles and their jumps that they made. They spent hours and hours at that man's house and that wonderful man taught my oldest son how to work with wood and build beautiful things, and in return my son would rush over there after school and ask if there was anything he could do to help out around their house. My boys put up their Christmas lights one year, they helped them put in new floors, brought in their trash cans after the garbage man picked up the trash, and brought in I don't know how many bags of groceries each week. That wonderful man was the first person in my sons lives who passed away and my boys were the first to go over to their house and give his wife and hug and offer to help do anything she needed in the coming weeks until she moved away to be closer to her kids. Those were some great memories. My sons still talk about Clayton and his wife.

So what you are telling me is I should get noise - PAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
cancelling headphones, my husband should not sleep and we should stop watching television or opening windows because these kids stand out there actually from another development where they aren't allowed to do this and jump all day long. I am not an old lady and I don't plan to give up my right to work and live in my house for this. I don't even know these kids. That's not going to happen believe me. We have a big park near here. What is the problem with going there. Well whatever.

I TOTALLY see where you're coming from and agree with you. I live in the country, so there are no noise ordinances out here. About five years ago, we had problems with a family who went out of the country and left their 19- and 20-year-old daughters in charge of the house for about a year. OMG! Parties every weekend. Parties during the week. The boyfriends and their friends were riding dirt bikes all freaking day long. I worked from home at that time and had to listen to what sounded like mosquitos on steroids (the dirt bikes) for sometimes up to 8 hours a day. Finally, when they had a weekday party and were very loud at 3 a.m. and I had to get up to go to the airport for a trip at 5 a.m., I called the girls. One of the daughters cussed me out. From that point on, we and other neighbors called the sheriff's department on them for the underage drinking, late night parties, and when we saw them riding the dirt bikes on the roads (illegal). Unfortunately, calling the authorities did NO good. The "kids" just kept on partying and riding the dirt bikes. The parents called us from the country they were in and chewed us out, saying their kids did nothing wrong and WE were the problem, and then changed their e-mail address and phone numbers so we couldn't contact them! Several months later when the parents finally got back, the wife/mom then continued to be a pain in our butts and tried to cause problems with us and other neighbors. So, long story short, CALL THE POLICE! In the city, you have noise ordinances, and if the kids are not supposed to ride skateboards in the street, I absolutely would call the police and have them (try to) put a stop to it. You pay your mortgage PLUS HOA dues, so those disrespectful brats should NOT be causing you and your husband grief!!! Just be prepared for years of agony from the parents as there is still a mutual hatred between most of the neighbors and the parents of the kids who caused all the problems. That mother/wife bad mouths the rest of us every chance she gets. She STILL cannot admit her kids and their idiot friends did anything wrong by disrupting the peace and quiet of our country neighborhood.
Yep. Isnt it amazing that some people believe the world should stop - PAMT

for their kids and everyone else should fall into place. That is what some of this sounds like on here. What they are doing is illegal and that is that. Why should anyone tolerate this BS. This has been going on for months and months and I am sick of it. We will have to get a lawyer if the police don't do what they have to. We have a pretty good police department here and the Township is their boss so if they don't do what they should I will contact the Township to report them because it is the Township regulation and the cops have to abide by that. They are paid by the Township. Glad to see someone sees my side of it instead of expecting people to hide inside their house so the neighbor kids can continue to do what is illegal. Give me a break. I personally don't care what they do to be honest. The mother of one of them sits over there smoking cigarettes all day collecting disability.

Here's what I'm saying: If they aren't allowed, call the police and let them take care of it. Otherwise, MOVE to a like-minded community. You can't expect everything to be the way you want it to be. If it's not allowed, the police can take care of it. If it is allowed, you need to get used to it or move.

We all have to pick our battles in life. In the - past, I might have pursued this - sm

(and most likely alienated myself from the rest of the neighborhood). Nowadays I tend to take a step back and have a long hard look at it, and would probably not consider it a cause worthy of an all-out fight, especially if you're talking lawyers, etc.

I've had something similar going on with a dog next door that barks about 18 hours a day, and acts very aggressively towards passers-by. I made a report to Animal Control about it, but unless the dog bites someone, they won't do anything. Meanwhile, I've gotten so used to hearing it bark that I no longer even hear it anymore and can tune it out completely.

It's not that either of those things are OK to do - whether it be neglecting a dog or letting kids break the homeowners' association rules. But with regards to the kids, since they're not on your property, but on a community-owned street, I would lean towards just taking the matter to the association, and letting them deal with it.

Sympathy for anyone on this board is usually at a bare minimum. People will do anything to disagree with a topic, and to try to make you feel foolish. I am with you 100%. You should not have to tolerate the constant noise. You have rights. Please report them. You deserve peace.

skateboard park for the kids. Where I live the skateboarders were taking over an area in a city park that was designated for roller skating. When the city put up signs to that effect, the skateboarders repeatedly tore them down. They set up grind rails and ramps in what was supposed to be an outdoor roller rink. They behaved badly, caused accidents, and flipping their skateboards, like you described above, was ruining our formerly smooth skating surface. If we confronted the skateboarders or asked them to leave, sometimes there were physical altercations between them and the roller skaters. The police were called out there almost every weekend.

Finally, after LOTS of lobbying the parks department, letter-writing, and meetings with neighbors in the area, the parks department and the police decided the best solution was to set up an area just for the skateboarders. (They should have done this in the first place, but oh well - at least they DID it!)

It wasn't even a dedicated skate park with bowls and ledges... just a closed-off side street that was designated a skate park. The kids are allowed to bring their own ramps and rails, and the city provided them with a few others. Now everyone is happy!

Easy solution - x

All you really have to do is get a bunch of little pebbles and sprinkle them over the road where they play.

For now, until a better solution is found, I would get that noise-cancelling headset. Meanwhile, I totally agree with rallying to give those kids a separate area to get the kind of exercise they need and enjoy. I, too, am glad they're not sitting on their rear-ends.

If your husband sleeps during most peoples' up times, I'm surprised he doesn't have a good pair of ear plugs. It's time for him to get those. I'm probably not supposed to mention brand names here, so I won't, but he can get a packet of 10 for a song and I think they block up to 29 decibels if used according to directions. (Each pair can be re-used several times.) I wear them every night because I'm a very light sleeper--even the ice cube maker in my frig wakes me up.

FYI: You can only purchase the highest decibel blocker as allowed by law.

I think one of the less talked about appeals of Donald Trump is anti-intellectualism as much as anything else.  His vocabulary has been described as juvenile which I imagine is about the same level as many of his followers.  They are tired of someone with a superior education talking down to them.  They understand Trump and don't have to open a dictionary or educate themselves to know what he's saying.   ...
