house pet owners -- recommended vacuum please!!!

Posted: Feb 2, 2012

I recently sprung for a new vacuum, an LG total care, fell in **love** with the suction and many great features.  However after 2 months, it quit on me.  Sent it back (5-yr parts and labor warranty) and when it came back, it worked 10 min and quit again.  I have animals in the house, old carpet with occasional strings that come out, and need something that works really good.  I would very much appreciate your input.  Would prefer esp to hear from those who have owned their vacuum more than 6 months.  thank you!!

I have a reconditioned Electrolux with a power nozzle. - works great! nm

Orek - only one I use

suction beyond the realm of suction

Dyson - Mrs. Pass

I love mine. It works fabulously and I have 2 boxers indoor 24/7. They make a specialty Dyson for pet hair, but I think the regular Dyson works just as well and is half the money.

I bought a used Kirby G5 years ago - sm - XXX

New they are about $1400 or so, so got a (barely) used on for $500 from our local Trader Times (like a Craig's list) back in about 2002. It is a tank. It has the shampooer unit which I used to use about once a month when the kids were small, now it is more like 1-2 x a year (min. once a year at Christmas). We have had to replace the power cord as the dog chewed it and it was shorting out and dangerous (obviously), and just this weekend replaced the boot and inner bag hose workings (we did that ourselves), so all told have about $650 into it (other than bags and shampoo). But it works great and is really a well made vacuum. My neighbor got one too after we did and loves hers too. So we it for the carpet and our central vac for the bare floors and dusting. (love my central vac too, if we ever move or build a house gonna insist on having that)

Dyson "Animal" - Happy MT Robin

they're expensive, but worth every penny. I have 8 cats and this sucker NEVER clogs on me unless I accidentally suck up one of the toy mice.

Helpful Suggestion - JL

I used to have pets. My biggest problem was the upholstery. I found a trick. I put on rubber gloves that have kind of ribbed fingertips, then make like a doggie and "dig" the furniture. You know, both paws going at it!

pet vac - Gem

[ In Reply To ..]
Vacuumed with my cannister, thought I was done. Bought a Bissel at Kohl's on sale, a pet vacuum with plastic cannister. Could not believe the extra hair I picked up with it when I revacuumed and loved that I could empty the cannister and wash it out vs. those paper bags! Wonderful except it "ate" the bindings on my area rugs as it is very strong. Best thing I ever bought.

Mine eats my rug too! - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have bare floors except an area rug in the living room and my Bissel eats the bindings too! Any way to fix it? I tried hand stitching it back on, but the vacuum just ripped it up again. Guess I need a new rug, but the vacuum works great, easy to clean, HEPA.
Answer about rug eating - gem
[ In Reply To ..]
I still have the chewed up rugs from the Bissel but lost our beautiful Golden, so I would live with it all over again to have him back. I had to put the vacuum out of sight for awhile. So enjoy your pet if you still have one and to heck with the rugs! I'm back to my old vacuum, doesn't do half the job. It helped tremendously with the allergies as well, I loved the Bissel.
Sorry for your loss - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm so sorry for your loss. I have 7 cats now and had lost one a couple of years ago, I know its hard. My rug is chewed up, but I keep trying to repair it, sewing it, but like you said, heck with it, at least its clean (sometimes). With 8 cats, not an easy feat, but I enjoy every day with them, never a dull moment.

Hate my Dyson - momofjacks

[ In Reply To ..]
It never loses suction, but I have to go over the same spots more than once to get all the hair up. Go to a dedicated vacuum or appliance place, find out their recommendations, and then try to find it cheaper somewhere else. When I looked a couple years ago, the best ones were Kirby, Miele, and Panasonic, but I couldn't bring myself to part with another 600 bucks.

FYI - the only difference between a Dyson Animal (which is the one I have) and the other Dyson vacs is the number of attachments. I believe the Animal comes with the most attachments. Other than that, the internals are the same.

I love my Dyson. I have a DC28 animal and - I can't believe I ever used a Kirby.

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know what the difference is between the Animal and the others and don't really care. This is the best vacuum I have ever owned and I have had a Kirby, a Rainbow and some Vortec piece of crap that some door-to-door salesman suckered my husband into paying $1000 dollar for. I also lived in a house where we used an Oreck that my roommate owned in college. I swear by my Dyson. LOVE it!

Oh--forgot. I have 3 indoor dogs and 2 small children, - so it's not just because we aren't messy

[ In Reply To ..]
One dog is a border collie/Queensland heeler cross who sheds like CRAZY, one is a wiener dog and one is a boxer. I have to vacuum every day to keep up with the hair, just in the kitchen.

Oreck XL. - CatOwner

[ In Reply To ..]
I LOVE, Love, love my Oreck XL! It only weighs 8 lb. so will still be serving me when I'm old, weak, and arthritic.

I own 2 cats, one of whom is longhaired. Running the Oreck is like having your carpets cleaned each time you vacuum!

Plus it's made in the USA!

Go with an Oreck; you won't be sorry.

Hoover Wind Tunnel -- was recommended by Consumer Reports - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been using it for about 5 years and have had to replace one little belt (cheap). Thinking I will need to replace the filter soon (more expensive). You need to be careful about cleaning the filter. Amazing what it sucks up, but I am not crazy about the attachments. I like my old Electrolux for the cracks and crevices and dusting tools.

Singer brand - been using for decades

[ In Reply To ..]
The same company that makes the sewing machines.

I LOVE my Shark - and my animals!

[ In Reply To ..]
My problem was not only the pet hair, but people hair, long people hair that would wrap around the beater brush and burn the belt on a very regular basis, plus heavy clunkers.

I threw my hands up in the air and my son did some research. The Shark has no belts, has that wind tunnel thing that just needs to be cleaned out every so often. Shark Navigator has pet tools.

It's light, it's WONDERFUL. Maneuvers well and is small for storage. No bags, which I didn't like at first, but now I do appreciate, although you do have to empty the cannister after each room as a rule, for me anyhow. Doesn't pick up cords, etc.

I do cut the hair off the beater brush before each use, but at least I don't have to worry about not being able to continue my cleaning, because there's no belt to burn.

I bought my daughter one for housewarming for her first apt. Not very romantic, but she's single LOL and she loves it too. I'm sure she doesn't use it enough, though!

Just my 2 cents.

thanks so much for all your input! - OP, no message

My vacuum cleaner literally bit the dust last night.  It lived a long life.  But in looking at new ones most are very pricey!  I have pets so I don't know if a moderately priced one would work but if I don't get one soon I'll be wearing my own fur coat!!  Any suggestions?? ...

To The MT Who Recommended Jergens Hand Cream...THANK YOU!!Sep 18, 2010
I am, strike that, WAS a diehard loyalist to Vaseline Intensive Care lotion, just because that's what ma always had at the kitchen sink.  Then I read on here that someone loved the scent of Jergens lotion and that it gave them a "lift" during their shift. So, I was in the store the other day and saw this stuff...popped open the cap and sniffed it and nearly died on the spot.  Pure heaven that fragrance!  So, I bought a medium-sized bottle.  That night I came home and dr ...

House Leaders Plan Separate House VoteMar 20, 2010
Democrats edged closer to finding 216 lawmakers to back a landmark health-care bill Saturday, as party leaders and White House officials were working on an executive order that they hope will win over a substantial number of antiabortion Democrats. The House Rules Committee continued its session on the third floor of the Capitol, where the panel is tasked with setting the terms of Sunday's floor debate. House leaders have decided to take a separate vote on the Senate version of the healt ...

Florida Dog Owners...help W/fleas, Please!Mar 04, 2011
Sorry if this post is long-winded. Every year the fleas get worse and worse. I'm trying to head it off this year before I get an infestation with the warmer weather. First of all, I have 3 dogs (2 shih tzu, 1 lab-ridgeback mix), we live in a heavily wooded area with lots of critters. I can keep the flea/tick problem under control during the colder temps but I've noticed over the last few days with the warmer temps that the dogs are getting fleas and ticks again. I realize that in a f ...

Any Cat Owners Here Use A Litter Maid?Dec 07, 2011
Does anyone here use a Litter Maid or other "automatic" litter box, and if so how do you like it? My little girl won't use the box if there is ANYTHING in it, and since I can't monitor the situation 24/7 I am thinking about "investing" in a Litter Maid. Thanks in advance. ...

Cat Owners - Should Declawing Be Illegal?Feb 17, 2010

Targeting Legal Gun OwnersFeb 14, 2013
Illegal gun owners are probably laughing their heads off: Missouri Democrats introduced an anti-gun bill which would turn law-abiding firearm owners into criminals. They will have 90 days to turn in their guns if the legislation is passed. Here’s part of the Democratic proposal in Missouri: 4. Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was ***LEGALLY*** in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do a ...

What Small Car Owners Should Know About Car InsuranceApr 14, 2015
Americans are known around the world for their love of big cars. Many wouldn’t be caught dead behind the wheel of one of those little cars you’re more likely to see on the streets in Europe. But as gas prices continue to climb higher and more Americans become concerned with the environmental impact of larger, less fuel-efficient cars, small cars are starting to grow in popularity even here. What many haven’t considered is that smaller cars tend to have a lower safety rating. For example in ...

Times: "Gun control advocates contend that semiautomatic weapons like the AR-15, the civilian version of the military’s M-16 and M-4, are a logical choice for anyone whose goal is to kill a lot of people in a short time because of their ability to rapidly fire multiple high-velocity rounds. “The people we’re talking about, once they get into ‘I want to kill a lot of people,’ it’s not a leap for them to ...

Mom's HouseJul 21, 2011
Okay I just want some of your opinions please. My mother who lived next to me started dating a man on Valentines Day. Two weeks later they informed me they had went and got married. I had no idea they were going to do this. She had been seeing him 2 weeks for crying out loud. I was in shock but got on with it. A little background here: My mom's house was paid for outright when it was built about 6 years ago and has never had a note. The house is worth 250,000 or was appraised for th ...

Would You Get Her House Cleaned?Oct 17, 2009
I took my grown daughter out the other night for an early birthday present. She asked for a laptop computer for her birthday/Christmas present- said it could cover both. She left for vacation today, will be gone a week. I kidded her yesterday and told her what I was getting her for Christmas was a good thorough house clea ...

I Was In A Union As An In-house MT.Feb 23, 2011
We were lumped in a group with the housekeepers and the nurses. Union membership was mandatory for employment and dues were taken directly out of our paychecks. Our local reps said they could only negotiate for 1 group a year out of our 3 departments, but every time our turn came around the nurses weren't happy and the union would negotiate for them again. Of course this was 10 years ago, but we made from $8.10 per hour to a max of $12.39 per hour, but we did only have to pay $50 a ...
