Opinion question

Posted: Mar 30, 2011

Do you think there will be a government shut down?  If your answer is no, please explain why.  If your answer is yes, tell who you think will be to blame and why.

Just trying to get a feel for what the REAL middle America (working class like you and me) is thinking about this issue.

I'll start.  I don't think there will be a shut down because an agreement will be reached on the budget.  Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans, despite all thier tough talk, will want to take the chance that they will get blamed for it and will therefore quietly compromise on the budget for the rest of this year.  As for the budget for next year, that's where the fighting will begin!

;

I think the economy is beyond repair - and both sides know it

[ In Reply To ..]
The dollar is collapsing and the debate over budget cuts is a distraction. At this point, it doesn't matter what they cut.

I agree totally. I think we're in a depression but nobody - wants to say the word. nm

I'll stay here and let the big guys flee to India, China, and the Bahamas. I'll stay here and invest in the good old USA.

I don't like some of the mean-spiritedness of some of the people these days, but I believe that too eventually will pass. I'm betting on it.
Outsourcing is the smaller issue - QE is the larger
[ In Reply To ..]
Like sheep to the slaughter if you believe the stock market is going like gangbusters and that's a good thing. In the Great Depression the money retained value but few had much of it. In a hyperinflationary depression few people have money and it eventually becomes worthless. The Fed is currently printing $75 billion a month to buy Treasury debt. How much will the Fed and the rest of the world have to create when Japan starts selling to raise rebuilding cash? The reason for the increase in stock prices is QE1, QE2 and the $12.3 billion the Fed injected in bailout money. This is not organic growth, but growth provided by the Fed printing press. Consumer spending boom?

THe Fed is holding mortgage interest rates artificially low (around 5%.) If the Fed was not doing this Mortgage rates would be 8% or 9 % according to some experts. 90% of all mortgages issued are coming from the Fannie, Freddie and FHA (government.) $7 trillion dollars are held outside the country. What will happen when these dollar holders realise that the U.S is simply printing money to fight wars, pay bills, prop up the stock market, hand out mortgages and suppress interest rates? They will sell and that could cause a sudden devaluation of the U.S. dollar. Think rising gas and food prices on steroids. Even if there is not a sudden dollar sell off, the currency is being devalued and the inflation you are seeing now will only get worse–much worse.

Also where would the stock market be without the phony accounting allowed by FASB?
Report on Financial News Yesterday Summed It Up - Consumer Sentimenet BAD; Corporate Sentiment GOOD
[ In Reply To ..]
The main point was on consumer sentiment vs. corporate sentiment. Consumer sentiment is way down and corporate sentiment is on a high.

One of the experts on the economy, and it was late and I am sorry that I didn't catch his name, said the rich are doing exceptionally well, never better in history. The middle class and poor are in a downward trend.

They discussed that the stock market is up when it shouldn't be, since jobs are not there and consumer sentiment is way down, meaning people aren't buying things. It doesn't make sense that corporate sentiment would be so high and the stock market so high as well.

To me that means all of us should rush out and buy some fancy jewelery stock or maybe designer purses. Those should be going UP UP UP!

EDITED to say that I'm kidding about the (fake) stock-buying advice. I'm certainly not going to do that, although it appears that some people are. It doesn't sound that wise to me, but others will probably do it and make a bundle, betting on the rich. I think I prefer to bet on the regular guy on the street. In the end I think we will win.

So, the "extreme" Tea Party shuts down the government. Is the catch-phrase/word still "extreme" or have the orders changed?  Anyway, the Tea Party shuts down the government and then Howard Dean will be cheering in the background.  Great. He should be ashamed of himself for playing politics with the VERY serious topic of federal spending and the deficit. Someone needs to tell these guys/gals to put their egos aside and that this is NOT a game anymore. I originally thought that they had a wake-up call in November, but I guess I was wrong.

It was Schumer earlier this week and now Dean. These guys continually expose themselves for who they are.

Howard Dean says he'd be "quietly rooting for" a government shutdown if he still had his old job as leader of the Democratic Party.

"If I was head of DNC, I would be quietly rooting for it," Dean told an audience hosted by National Journal in Washington this morning. "I know who's going to get blamed - we've been down this road before."

Yes, it's definitely going to be bad for the t-party when the shut-down happens - Investing In The USA!

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think it will be anything to celebrate, but the one good thing that will come out of it is that the t-party will have to change its tactics a bit.

I was sad to see their protest yesterday with some signs with very bad language and others calling the president a communist, which shows the mentality of the people who call themselves the t-party.
And here we go....DNC serial posting has - found its way to MT Stars.
[ In Reply To ..]
you really think the dots cannot be connected after Schumer's faux pas? And yet you continue, and actually name call the tea party. Frankly, as an Independent, it is not their mentality I am this point questioning.

Post some facts, anything, to support what you are saying. As to calling the President a communist...they are entitled to their opinion. I think he leans Marxist and don't mind saying so...and I am not affiliated with the tea party.

However, if I have my choice based on what the tea party stands for (the Constitution, limited government, more power at the state level, financial accountability to name a few) and what Obama is for (income redistribution, more not less people on the government tit), then I would choose the former. As an American, I am somewhat surprised that you don't. Oh wait...have they offshored their serial posting duties? Just checkin.

We have all heard the tape of Chuck Schumer talking about giving the DNC marching orders to the people on the conference call (extremist tea party). Within a few minutes the posts started to appear here. No substance, just bash the tea party. And someone that is not mean in your estimation.

Why would someone be upset or affronted to be acknowledged for doing what they have been directed to do, that is bash the "extremist" tea party.

Sorry, don't find the post mean at all. Perhaps you can explain why you think it is mean and the one it is replying to is not.

Are you really questioning my mental capacity?

There are some mean-spirited people on this board. Just like my post yesterday, this is so insulting and uncalled for. The attacks cross over the line when they get personal. This board is beginning to sound more and more like Bill Maher talking points.

term results, that more of we Independents now lean right more than left. Seems pretty obvious to me with the shellacking that took place.

As to the right getting mean...if this board is any indicator of overall America, I am seeing much more "spewing" (why do you guys like that word so much...LOL) directed AT the tea party than coming FROM it. MUCH more. So, I am not real sure how much validity to give this post...whether it is what you really feel or are posting this to prop up the spewing AT the party.

Of course, no way of knowing, but...when someone who claims independence can go down through all these threads and surmise that it is the right that is getting mean...makes me question it. Sorry.

I think there may be a shutdown.... - a totally political ploy....Indy

[ In Reply To ..]
playing russian roulette with an already failing economy to see who will blink first. Already, from the post below and from Chuck Schumer\'s own words on that tape...The Dems want a shutdown so they can blame it on the tea party. And the party loyal are already running out to do the DNC bidding....hence the post below.

It is just maddening to me that the Democrats refuse to sign off on $51 billion in cuts. Looking at the overall budget Obama wanted, that is too little in my opinion, but it is SOMETHING. Yet they offer a token $21 billion (so they can taunt the tea party with you didn't get what you wanted, nanny nanny boo boo) and would indicate to me that the Democrats still do not understand the gravity of the situation, or just don't care, and are not going to address it in any meaningful way. They want to make a token reduction and keep spending like drunken sailors when our economy is in the tank.

So, yes, unless the Democrats agree to the $51 billion, there may very well be a shutdown. They will blame the tea party and the the Republicans will blame the Democrats. I think all those people who voted in the midterms to send a bunch of Democrats home will blame the Democrats (who will be again telling them no need to cut costs or spending). There may not be a huge uproar that you can hear right now...however, I believe there will be one in the 2012 elections that will be heard.

I just do not understand the arrogance and in-your-face attitude of we don\'t care WHAT the majority of the country wants. We are going to do what we want, like it or not, and if it takes shutting down the government and blaming the tea party to get them out of our faces, then that is what we will do.

Note to Democrats: I think this will backfire on you big time, but if you must, you must I guess.

I think you may be unaware of the correct numbers that each party brought to the debate - Investing In The USA!

[ In Reply To ..]
Go back and look at those numbers again. The rhetoric is confusing the facts, which is apparently the way the t-party wants it. It serves their interests.

I looked at the numbers this morning. If yours - differ, please post your

I think one of the less talked about appeals of Donald Trump is anti-intellectualism as much as anything else.  His vocabulary has been described as juvenile which I imagine is about the same level as many of his followers.  They are tired of someone with a superior education talking down to them.  They understand Trump and don't have to open a dictionary or educate themselves to know what he's saying.   ...
