summer

Posted: Jun 9, 2010

At this point hiring a babysitter is not even an option due to pay cuts.  Kids have been out of school for 3 days, and they are already saying, "I'm bored."  Hubby works 12-hour night shifts and has to get some sleep sometime.

This is gonna be FUN!

Anyone else dealing with this?

Yep....I've got 5 (4 old enough for school and a baby), and defintely no $$ for a babysitter here. It's always an adventure!! =)

Hang in there....August is coming!!

This is what I do, and granted, it's not for everyone, but it's working for me. I wake up EARLY and get more than half of my day done before they wake up. Then I run them ragged, pool, outdoor stuff, games, picnics... NO TELEVISION, NO ELECTRONIC GAMES, CELL PHONE TEXTING, NOTHING. Just real physical stuff. It exhausts me, but by mid afternoon they wind down and by early evening they're done and I can get another couple of hours done.

I've cut down to 6 hours instead of 8 and get just as much work done. By the end of the day I fall into bed and I'm exhausted. I'm sure I'll get used to it though and it's just what I have to do. My husband is a night shift worker too. I have 3 kids, 7, 9 and 11. If I start work at 6, they sleep kind of late and then lazy around for about an hour, so I can be done with the first half by 9 or 10. Then, off we go.

We've planted gardens in the yard, they help clean, had done the lemonade stand and a "kid yard sale" which helped clean out their rooms and closets! they made a little spending money too.

Public pools and rec centers are GREAT places to take the kids for very little money. ours has arts and crafts, summer leagues, swimming, dancing, martial arts and gymnastics. I'm getting in shape too!

Another thing, at the end of the school year I had anticipated summer being tough and made play dates with some of the other moms. About 5 of us got together and one day a week have an activity or gathering at someones place to keep the kids socialized with their school friends. (this tires them out too).

Well, good luck. Hope you find something that works for you. I'm fortunate to have a good support system and understand this won't work for everyone, just want to throw my ideas out there.

thank you both - those are excellent

ideas. 5 kids, wow. I can't top that:) As they say down here in the South, bless your heart.

I used to work that split up of a schedule....worked great. Now I am more pigeon-holed into certain hours thanks to my current company. However, I do start working at 0500 and always have. I do get a solid 2-3 hours in or more before they even wake up. If I didn't do that, I'd really be in trouble.

I will keep your ideas in mind in case it ever works out that I can take off some time in the mid mornings. TY!

Me, too. - Kendra

Unfortunately (and fortunately at the same time:)), my kids are 3 and 1, so this is nothing new, but I try to do work early in the morning and at night after bed time. I, too, cart them all over--park, Jiu-Jitsu, pool, anything to wear them out. Good luck, but at least they are old enough to keep themselves mostly busy!

Summer Will Soon Be Here, Lunches? Apr 15, 2013
Need some ideas about the kids for this summer. I work the 2nd shift so after breakfast need something that will be easy for me to "throw" together and not spend time on. These kids are young, 1 going into middle school, but they will eat most things, not picky. I would like to have something fixed before I start my midday work day. ...

Out Of School Ideas For Summer?May 22, 2013
Hi all, My son's last day of school is today.  Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I don't want video games and/or TV watching to be the main ingredient of his summer days. We don't have any kids in the area his age to play with, and he is the only one at home anymore so no siblings to play with. He is 10 and it is hard to keep him from getting bored and wanting to "veg" all day. Any ideas appreciated ...

Kids Visiting In Summer, Still Having To WorkApr 12, 2013
and I am one who works straight through without taking time out of the day. I know I can get Netflix for them, they have their Ipads, can get some crafty things to make and some games like puzzles and the lot. I know this sounds like a lot to me but I don’t want them bored to tears. We are planning trips while they are here but then the work days are still hanging around in between. Any other suggestions some of you mothers have for the time you have to be at the keyboard? ...

Still No Consensus On Border Plan As Congress Hurtles Toward Summer RecessJul 17, 2014
I look forward to the Minuteman Project getting involved if something isn't done to seal our borders. The sad truth, however, is that that will also take many, many months to organize. We're screwed. ...
