Keeping the house clean.

Posted: Oct 26, 2010

How do you all do it? I've always been known as a neat freak and I find that I'm now a slob. House appears clean but only because I hide things. The floors are horrible but I'm lucky because they're slate and dirt doesn't show as badly. I'm on here work all the time, literally. I need a vacation, a clean house, and a new job that pays.

I love my home. I keep it presentable at all times. You never know when company will come by. Always keep coffee and cakes at the ready too.

I make it a point to clean as I go, and set aside half a day during the week to do major stuff. My husband also takes pride in our home and helps in the house but mostly maintains the yard.

I really and truely love my home! We do one or two minor projects a year as we can afford and this summer made a beautiful wrap around porch with acid washed cement flooring. Soooo beautiful. Now I'm working as much as possible for patio furniture for next summer!

I love mine too but.... - Dee

Just can't find the time. On weekends I clean like crazy but during the week I'm on here at around 6:30, take a break around noon for 30 mins, and am back on here until time to fix dinner. My husband is of no help at all. He's been out of work now for almost two years, thank God for savings, and is pretty much idle while I do it all.

You need to do a Bobbit on him. - nm

Nah, we have enough to live on so... - Dee

I think I'll let him live only due to the money aspect. lol. I'm seriously thinking of only cooking hot dogs and crap since he's a workout freak who eats no fat or junk food and within a day or two he'll at least do the cooking. It's a plan I'm going to start tonight. ha. Thank God for rental property though or I'd be worried. However, I do have a lot of respect for Lorina Bobbitt. hahahahaha (evil laugh)
THere isnt enough money in the world for me to let a man - sponge off me. nm

......Thanks for letting me vent. I actually got up and cleaned three bedrooms and the kitchen. Tomorrow I hope to do more cleaning, if there\'s time, and then I told him we\'re making a list of stuff he needs to do to help out. He acted okay about it but we\'ll see.........

I can SOOOO relate. As a matter of fact, just this past week I totally went off and told my husband and my 3 kids who are all slobs, that they better start pitching in around here because I cannot do it physically or mentally any more and I threatened to leave and let them do it all. There just isn't enough hours in my day! On Mondays, I clean all day to catch up and by that evening, the house is trashed again and I don't get a chance to clean again until Friday. Of course by Monday again, it is trashed from the weekend. My husband says "that womens work" because his mom was a stay-at-home mom and did not have to work. Of course, I do not have that luxury and if he expects me to work and pull my weight, then he better pitch in and help. It seems to have helped some but we will see in another couple of weeks or so. I swear, one more thing and I am going to lose it!!
With the kids, you have to start young. Mine were 2, standing - at an end table with a dust rag. nm

Totally know what you mean. My house - sm

constantly looks like a tornado went through. I try to pick things up and try to clean a room every 2 nights after work, but it is totally impossible to keep up if you work 10-12 hours a day like me 6 days a week. The 1 day I don't work the last thing I want to do is clean. I keep saying I am going to do 1 room from top to bottom a week, but it never gets done. Mail piles up, dishes pile up because I don't seem to get to the dishwasher to unload it, etc. Never ending cycle.

Cleaning the house is therapeutic for me. I'd rather busy myself with a house project than watch television.

I find that if I keep it neat, i really only have to do 1 or 2 hours of intense cleaning once a week.

PS. If hubby doesn't help, and your not in dire straits HIRE A HELPER once every other week!

I'd have words with DH if he didn't help. We're both adults, I expect help, he helps. It is after all OUR home.

I'm with you - I've got one lucky thing though - Too tired to clean

[ In Reply To ..]
I work 6 days a week 10-12 hours a day, depending on the work load. I love to clean, but just find myself too tired. It's a real mess, clothes over the back of the couch, table piled with photo scanning projects, papers, bills, etc, all over the place.

My lucky thing though is my DH. He does dishes. He doesn't work so he does them. He also cleans the bathroom and if I want him to vacuum he'll do that. On my free day off I'm either grocery shopping or straightening up, but most of the time I'm resting from work.

I used to stress because ever since being in the military and growing up in a house of people who hate to clean I became a neat freak. Now I don't care. I've got to make the money. Guess my priorities changes as I get older.

Ditto on that, my house gets messy quick - sm - ECMT

with 2 kids, 3 dogs, and a DH that uses the LR like it is his closet (piles all his clothes on the back of the couch, overnight bag, computer, etc) then complains how messy the LR room is. He will if disgusted enough actually vacuum, which he enjoys, so don't know why he doesn't do it more often. I just don't have the time....work from 8am to 2am on and off all day...so kept hopping.

I once took on a 3rd job, just about 8-10 hours per week - Specifically to pay a cleaning service

[ In Reply To ..]
I took on the job specifically to have the money to hire a local cleaning service. The woman cleaned much better than I ever could and it was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. I would leave when she arrived and run my weekly errands, and when I returned home, it was bright and shiny and clean for the upcoming week. TOTALLY worth it.

That's what I do! I sell Avon, just to neighbors and friends and people at hubby's office, just earn enough to hire a housekeeper. She comes in every other week for 6 hours and I really appreciate how she is so very meticulous! She even takes down all my nic nacks (and I have many "collections"!) and cleans them all lovingly inside and out! We have 2 furry dogs and 3 cats but you'd never know it, no floating fur! I love her!!!!

I clean normally between her visits. Its one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

I hate the way my husband cleans, so here's our deal - I am spoiled

[ In Reply To ..]
I do all of the cleaning. He will vacuum and clean the toilets though. If he cleans anything else, I usually go behind him and do it over, so he stopped. However, he does almost all of the cooking, laundry, and does do all of the grocery shopping.

Just imagine, your laundry, cooking, and grocery shopping done!! I don't mind doing the rest. I absolutely love this!! I am so spoiled.
My husband does all of the housework and cooking - I do the bread-winning
[ In Reply To ..]
We have role reversal and I serve as the bread winner, bring home the bacon, or whatever the current term is, and he does all of the usual "housewife" things such as cooking, cleaning, paying the bills, running the errands, etc. All I have to do is sit and work or, as he puts it, "Sit there and look pretty." I love it, too, and he is so much better at cooking and cleaning than I am, lol! It might not work for everyone but the arrangement sure works for us.

I Believe THIS President Will Clean Up May 21, 2014
The whistleblower in this situation is a true hero - he took it to the media and now THEY have brought it to all of us. I'll wait to see what the internal investigation shows with regard to mistakes made by the Obama administration, but I will say this, THIS IS A DECADES-OLD travesty. I think Obama should rip the covers off of this - exposing any and all responsible - including his own administration so that Americans can see just how long AND WHY Vets have been MIS-TREATED after serving ...

Dems Considering Keeping Bush Tax CutsJul 22, 2010
Democrats are considering a plan to delay tax hikes on the wealthy for two years because the economic recovery is slow and they fear getting crushed in November’s election.  It could mean a big reprieve for families earning $250,000 and above annually.  President George W. Bush’s tax cuts will expire at the end of the year unless Congress acts to delay their sunset.  Some Democrats are now arguing forcefully that a delay is a win-win plan that would help the federal ...
