How do you encourage someone you love about the dating scene?

Posted: Jan 18, 2010

My  older sister who turned 30 last year has been single for about 4 years.  She has been out with guys, one who she dated about 6 months and fell hard for (she doesn't just fall in love with everyone she dates)... he ended up breaking her heart (twice as she gave him a second chance)... then after that has gone out with a couple losers, who are complete LIARS and say they want to hang out again, then never call... such lame-o's that cannot even be honest.

anyways, she sees me, who has absolutely no problem meeting guys and i think she is resentful.  our other sister (several years younger) is married with a baby and a wonderful husband.  I personally have a man that has been around for 8 years and loves me unconditionally. (the last 2 have been off and on, thus me being able to go out with other guys, im just the one never interested in a relationship)... so today she says that the guy she fell hardest for almost a year ago texted her and told her he was falling in love with her, that's why he backed away.  well come on, we all know that's a line, but i do not know why he is dragging her around still.  she knows this too, she's not dumb... but then she says to me "I'm done with this.  When am I going to meet someone"?

and my heart breaks... she has tried the online dating thing (where most of these jerks come from...)... and i am just at a loss as to what to say, and i feel so bad.  is there any way to keep her hope alive, even after saying the normal stuff like, oh it wasn't meant to be, just give it time, blah blah blah??

thanks...

Oh, man, sounds like MY sister! - Except my sister is 56....

She says she doesn't want to grow old alone. I maintain that it's better to be alone than to wish you were.

She has met guys via online dating, and there's something seriously wrong with ALL of them. Fortunately, she can usually spot what's wrong with them. Unfortunately, she usually doesn't spot it soon enough, before she gets all head-over-heels over them.

Now she's trying to extricate herself from a guy who claims Homeland Security is watching his every move. Either he's lying (because he somehow thinks that's a resume-enhancer) or he's telling the truth. We're not sure which is scarier.

I am sorry I have no advice to offer your sister, other than the usual thing, to go to places where she might meet decent, like-minded people (social activities, volunteering, groups, interest clubs, etc.). On an encouraging note in that vein, a few years ago I had a young female friend who wanted to meet quality men. I made those suggestions to her. Among other things, she joined Toastmasters. The rest is history.

The best of luck to your sister--and to YOU. It's hard being the one who has to watch. Believe me, I know.

well, first, he may really love her (sm) - EllaMT

That may really be why he backed off. But the other thing is, you don't really care about the relationship and she does...so that is probably why you have one and she doesn't. I am reading a book called, "why men marry b*tches" and it says that as soon as you show them that you are seeking their approval they lose respect for you. You aren't supposed to be mean to them, but don't act like they you can't live without them either. Tell her to read that book!! It is in Barnes and Noble now!

Instead Of Visiting Disaster Scene, Obama Lectures Louisiana OnAug 20, 2016
Though he could not be bothered to interrupt his Martha’s Vineyard vacation to actually visit those devastated by historic flooding in Louisiana and beyond, President Barack Obama’s Justice Department did manage to send the disaster-plagued state’s leaders a refresher course in anti-discrimination law. The federal agency drafted a 16-page document laying out in excruciating detail the hoops aid workers must jump through in order to avoid running afoul of the law. Any organizations ...

DATING AT 50+Feb 28, 2011
I have been on my own, divorced, for almost 20 years.  In the beginning I went on a couple of dates, but decided I was better off raising my kids and being alone.  My marriage was bad, he cheated, lied, cheated, hardly spent quality time with my kids, and oh yeah, he cheated... often. Anyway.  Kids have grown up, gone on their way and moved out of state.  I have family close by, but for the most part am on my own with a few single friends and a few married friends.  I d ...

I Encourage You To Watch Sky News About The Fire And Political FalloutJun 16, 2017
I would encourage you to watch Sky News about the fire. You will see how the politicians there are taking a lot of hatred from the victims of that high rise fire. They hate PM May. The Queen came out right away as did the one running against the PM. She waited till today. Anyway, you can watch it live or slide the slider back to the beginning and you can watch what has been on all day. It is very interesting. The death toll is now 30 and they are missing 70 more. I think there were betw ...

Teens And Dating.Jul 29, 2011
Ever get dragged into a marital explosion?  I did yesterday. The situation is that I have a 14 y/o son who is really in love with a 14 y/o girl. They met at church 6 months ago. At first, we only allowed youth activities and then slowly allowed her to come over to our house and be included in family activities. They are never allowed alone at any times although I do allow them to sit together on the couch, and I know they have kissed because my youngest son is a spy! I consider my husband a ...

Okay, so I had a moment of whats out there so I filled out a profile on a dating site (the only way you can see anything on tha site is the fill out a profile), I didn't put a picture up but I did list likes/dislikes.  I did talk to a few men but no dates, meet ups or whatever.  Well, this morning the site e-mailed me that someone was looking at my profile.  To my shock it was my soon to be ex husband.  We live in a small town and it is obvious who it is.  I was&nbs ...

Dating Younger - One More Question (sm)May 23, 2010
So what would you do if you dated a younger man only to find out that you both had started to have a very strong instant bond, only he wants to have children so he began struggling with that issue? He says it is unfair to take things any further with me because we have gotten so attached...him included, but that he knows he wants to have children.  I am 42, already have two children, and have had a tubal ligation in the past. Obviously, trying to keep him with me would be unfair to him ...

Senior Dating SitesJan 04, 2016
Have any of you older ones had any good experiences with senior dating sites that you can recommend?  I've been looking online, and after reading reviews, they all look like they can potentially rip you off.  Actually, I don't even want to "date" per se, just want a companion to go places with, male or female, which is harder than you might think, especially where I live now.   Anyway, I found that AARP had its own dating site, and I thought - gr ...

Dating Etiquette Opinions Wanted (sm)Apr 06, 2010
I met a guy a year ago right after I separated from my husband & dated him a few times - he really liked me, but I decided I wasn't ready to get serious with anyone.  Fast forward to a year later.  We have reconnected and have been talking on the phone and texting. He is very nice and intelligent and attractive to me in many ways.  EXCEPT over the course of this year he has gotten a pretty good sized cavity on one of his top canine teeth.  He has a good job... Anyone Have Experience With Online Dating Websites?Nov 14, 2013
I'm sort of, kind of, maybe, possibly considering signing up with an online dating website like Christian Mingle or Plenty of Fish.  Do any of you have experience with either of these?  Divorced 6 years (from 2nd husband), I'm finally feeling ready to share my heart again with a nice man.  Since I'm 50% the reason for both divorces, I know that I'm far from perfect...but I feel like I've learned to spot a man who will end being a verbal abuser.  I hop ...

Dating Again - Issue With Adult ChildrenJul 12, 2016

I have 2 adult children who live with me.  My son is 26, my daughter is 22.  They are causing major problems.  They REFUSE to spend any time with my new boyfriend.  They DEMAND I tell them when he is coming over, so they can hide in their room ...

Do I Tell A Parent Her Daughter Is Dating A Teen Who Uses Oxycontin Recreationally?Dec 30, 2009
I would certainly want someone to tell me, but you have to realize I live in an area where a lot of parents allow underage drinking.  This particular mother has given liquor to teens, however, I am quite sure she wouldn't like oxycontin and oxycodone.  I do know this for fact that the kid uses.  My son wanted me to tell the parents and then he changed his mind but after I thought about it, I feel if something bad happened, I would feel I should have said something. Please he ...

Tea Party Republicans Love Love Love Ted CruzOct 18, 2013
even among Republicans, according to a survey from Pew Research. But the group is still potent within the Republican Party — which means that Sen. Ted Cruz gets a bit of good news on an otherwise bleak day. "Tea Party" is a necessarily vague affiliation. There are members of Tea Party groups, of course, but Pew largely had to allow poll respondents to self identify. And a lot of Republicans did so. About four-in-ten (41%) Republicans and Republican leaners agree with the Tea Pa ...

5th Graders "dating"???? SmDec 01, 2009
I just came from a little lunch with a couple of my friends.  We are friends because our kids go to school together (5th grade).  I like them, but not enought to become "Best" friends.  Anyway, they are talking about how their boys have "girlfriends", where they go to the movies together (of course with a parent/parents there with them), and go to each other's houses and play and so on.  I think it's too young to be thinking about having boyfriends/girlfriends.&nbs ...

The group tracks money in politics and isn’t affiliated with a political party. “Eighty-six million dollars is an astoni ...

Love LifeFeb 25, 2010
Adult subject.  Please be forewarned, I am seeking genuine opinions in this matter.  I am not seeking to instigate a riot.   My husband is a lousy lover.  We have been married for 13+ years and I guess it will never change.  I have guided, instructed, suggested, taken over, recommended... with no results.  He mostly lays there like a slug and (I guess) WANTs me to take over, but it ends up being a CHORE and there is no positive end result for me.
