do i tell a parent her daughter is dating a teen who uses oxycontin recreationally?

Posted: Dec 30, 2009

I would certainly want someone to tell me, but you have to realize I live in an area where a lot of parents allow underage drinking.  This particular mother has given liquor to teens, however, I am quite sure she wouldn't like oxycontin and oxycodone.  I do know this for fact that the kid uses.  My son wanted me to tell the parents and then he changed his mind but after I thought about it, I feel if something bad happened, I would feel I should have said something.

Please help me.  Also what to do about parents allowing liquor for high school kids and calling them "almost college bound" as if that makes it better.

I'm going nuts with these parents.  I'm worried about all the kids.  I would want someone to tell me.

Underage drinking or drugging? - Mother and grandmother

I would turn them in in a heartbeat and not think a thing about it. I would turn my own child in, why would I care about turning someone else's in? There are laws and the law states no one under a certain age is allowed to .....

certainly tell the parents - you must not live in GA

Your child needs to keep his distance from her. Occasional use can blossom into addiction quickly. Georgia has some really aggressive laws and pursue parents behaving like the one you describe because of multiple incidents of lost lives of young people. If the adult knew of drug/alcohol use and did not put a stop to it, they were held responsible for the lost lives. You really don't want to be in that position either for her or for you. The laws are there for a reason. These kids can't be expected to handle adult things at that age.

if you do rat them out - Knower

I would do it anonymously.

Parents don't like to be told they are doing a crap job of parenting and they will see you as nothing more than a buttinsky and trouble maker. You might be setting yourself up for trouble of your own.

I'm not saying don't tell.. I'm saying be smart and don't let anyone know it's you doing the telling.

I'm sure now people will post saying don't be afraid! you have every right! stand up for your beliefs! But I'm speaking from experience here.... protect yourself if you decide to open up this can of worms.

I told and guess what - Mommy

I told the mother and aunt of the girl who is dating the oxycontin user and they said someone else already told them and they are keeping a close eye on it.

Really?

Tonight the daughter is having a New Year's Eve party and she is only 15. Her mother is going to her own party in the area. The mother is leaving an 18 yr old neighbor in charge. The 18 yr old drinks.

People are so selfish, stupid, irresponsible.

I give up!

Some parents just do not want to know or do not care - so long as the cops are not knocking on their door

I learned long ago... I will parent mine, and let them parent theirs.

Sad situation - kids think they're immortal - Vikefan

I'm glad you said something. At least if something happens, you tried to help. I had an OD of vodka and methadone. O2 sat was in the 30s when paramedics got there. Kids think they're immortal. Gosh, I drank when I was younger/stupid but never would have done pills with booze. I wonder what makes this generation think it's so safe? The only time I mixed anything was when I was about 14 and I drank and smoked pot. It made me puke. Never mixed again. Course, it could have been that nasty Malt Duck stuff they used to make - remember that - the mixture of beer and wine? Yech.

Oh, and one has to wonder where the kid is getting that medication. Where do they get all that oxycontin that they sell on the street? Grandma's medicine cabinet? Michael Jackson's doctor? I heard it's something like $1 a mg, so if you want an 80 mg pill, you pay $80. Where do the kids get the money? Yowza.

Teen Daughter's Job DramaJul 16, 2010
My 17-year-old daughter called me on her break (she works in fast food) and said her manager had walked up behind her and slapped her arm, then scolded her about something she was doing wrong.  I could tell she had been crying, but it was 2 hours after the incident had happened.  I asked her if it just hurt her feelings or if she slapped her hard enough that it hurt.  She said it was hard enough that it stung for about 5 minutes.   How upset would you be if it were your ...

DATING AT 50+Feb 28, 2011
I have been on my own, divorced, for almost 20 years.  In the beginning I went on a couple of dates, but decided I was better off raising my kids and being alone.  My marriage was bad, he cheated, lied, cheated, hardly spent quality time with my kids, and oh yeah, he cheated... often. Anyway.  Kids have grown up, gone on their way and moved out of state.  I have family close by, but for the most part am on my own with a few single friends and a few married friends.  I d ...

Teens And Dating.Jul 29, 2011
Ever get dragged into a marital explosion?  I did yesterday. The situation is that I have a 14 y/o son who is really in love with a 14 y/o girl. They met at church 6 months ago. At first, we only allowed youth activities and then slowly allowed her to come over to our house and be included in family activities. They are never allowed alone at any times although I do allow them to sit together on the couch, and I know they have kissed because my youngest son is a spy! I consider my husband a ...

Dating Younger - One More Question (sm)May 23, 2010
So what would you do if you dated a younger man only to find out that you both had started to have a very strong instant bond, only he wants to have children so he began struggling with that issue? He says it is unfair to take things any further with me because we have gotten so attached...him included, but that he knows he wants to have children.  I am 42, already have two children, and have had a tubal ligation in the past. Obviously, trying to keep him with me would be unfair to him ...

Senior Dating SitesJan 04, 2016
Have any of you older ones had any good experiences with senior dating sites that you can recommend?  I've been looking online, and after reading reviews, they all look like they can potentially rip you off.  Actually, I don't even want to "date" per se, just want a companion to go places with, male or female, which is harder than you might think, especially where I live now.   Anyway, I found that AARP had its own dating site, and I thought - gr ...

Teen With Impacted Canine ToothMar 27, 2012
We just found out yesterday that my 15-year-old son who has perfectly straight teeth, still has his left canine baby tooth and an impacted adult tooth above it.  I wasn't given much information other than he probably needs braces.  I've researched it on Google and it sounds horrible.  Braces, bracketing, putting a gold chain on the impacted tooth to pull it down, surgeries, several years of treatment.  Has anyone had anything like this at all happen?  It sounds ...

Four Gay Teen Suicides In Past 4 Weeks Following Sep 30, 2010
The common threads between the following cases are gay sexual orientation, both real and perceived, bullying and harassment, desperate parents, school officials turning a blind eye and a viral virtual environment plastered with homophobic rants in blogs, on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and alongside broadcast media in the wake of reporting on DADT unconstitutionality and repeal.  Seth Walsh, 13, died yesterday after 9 days on life support following a successful suicide attempt by hangin ...

Teen Sent Home Over ‘Disruptive’ ShirtSep 15, 2015
Story at link, but teen sent home from school over T-shirt reading, "No one knows I'm a Lesbian." I cannot believe our country has become filled with over sensitive whiny babies who can't filter out what they don't agree with.  I've seen far worse on T-shirts than what was printed on this young lady's T-shirt.  I just don't understand how this T-shirt could be considered offensive or disruptive.     Link:  https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/ ...

A Parent Who Steals From You...Jun 03, 2011
If your dad stole from you and your husband, would you continue to associate with him? I don't think most would. We have had something go missing before, and we suspected him of stealing it. It was a John Deere lawnmower deck. The lawnmower needed a clutch. We have another lawnmower so we were waiting to fix that one. My dad goes around looking for metal to take to the salvage yards or copper or whatever he can find because he doesn't work. Well, we suspected he took the deck of ...

True Account Of 16-year-old Teen Shot At BorderNov 26, 2012
Below is an "AP" article discussing the death of a 16-year-old at the Mexican border previously discussed in posts below.  The incident actually occurred on October 10, 2012. I also agree it is horrific that a 16-year-old lost his life under any circumstances.  Unfortunately, if you read the article, the incident was not iniated because of rock throwing, but rather because a truck load of narcotics was abandoned by two individuals and the individuals were running back to Mexico.&n ...

If You Want To Find Stable Two-parent Families, Bypass Palin Country And Go To Pelosi May 04, 2010
If you want to find stable two-parent families, bypass Palin country and go to Pelosi territory. by Jonathan Rauch Saturday, May 1, 2010 Can it be? One of the oddest paradoxes of modern cultural politics may at last be resolved. But if you want to find two-parent families with stable marriages and coddled kids, your best bet is to bypass S ...
