I love my cat but HELP
Posted: Feb 18, 2013
I have several cats but one in particular that I cannot seem to get this under control. This is a mostly white cat, has some markings like calico. She is shedding so much that I carry her on my clothing anywhere I go and sometimes do not know there until I look, see and ashamed did not get off. This is what I have tried: Gave her a bath last night with deshedding liquid from Petsmart- got really good reviews but bless her little heart, she was not used to that and shaking like a leaf afterwards. I dried her. Today I used Furminator on her. I think I could sit and comb forever and still would have fur. I brushed her and then took Bounce (like you use in your dryer) and wiped her down. I have heard changing the cat food might work- the last time I tried that 2 of the cats had diarrhea, not a good thing but does anyone know anything I can do to cut down on some of this fur that is overtaking me? Thanks.;
That's sick! If you have no advice to offer then don't - NOT funny!!!

The OP is having a problem with a cat and you put a picture of a razor up??? You think thats funny? It's not. What do you do when you see an injured animal? Laugh?
You should be ashamed of yourself.
I thought it was pretty funny - lighten up.

She's having a cat HAIR problem, it's a shaver...the same joke works for people with bad hair days. Get a grip.
I would shave my OWN head before using Bounce on my cat! - egads

I've tried using Bounce on my hair, - it didn't help static!

I spray my brush lightly with Static Guard. Works great, hair - looks the same, no smell. Try it. nm

Here's an article regarding shaving cats. It's actually a good thing to do.

has gotten a spring clip. She loves being able to groom herself without her tongue getting all tangled up in the hair. She also loves it when I run my hand backwards, against the direction of the hair, when it's short. I do sort of a modified "lion" cut, leaving her neck "mane" (hair seems different there... doesn't usually mat), her legs, and her tail fur intact, other than a slight sanitary clip in the anal area. The legs don't mat, and they're too hard to clip. Same with the tail. Also, the first time she was clipped, I had the vet do it, and they not only shaved her hair right down to the skin, so she was "nekkid", but they shaved her tail (except the tip). The tail never quite regained its full glory, however the body hair grows back almost TOO fast! I got some quiet, small animal clippers, and started getting her used to them by rubbing her body with them (turned off), then running them nearby, without using them on her, so she could get used to the sound. Finally I rubbed them on her while turned on (not using the blades). I had a collar & leash on her at the time. At first she spazzed out a bit, but then realized I wasn't going to hurt her. When she let me, I clipped a small area, then stopped, praised her, and gave her a treat. Repeated the process a few hours later, and continued this for about 2 days. Now, she lets me clip her with no vet or sedation needed. I think she knows she'll feel a lot better when we're done. It's also the perfect time to bathe her - after all the long body hair is gone!
If the weather suddenly turns cold right aftert she's been clipped, sometimes I'll put a sweater on her. Dog sweaters don't fit her long body - I took an old leg warmer, cut it to proper body length, and cut front leg holes in it. She likes it! When her clipped coat grows back, later in the spring/early summer, it's clean, beautiful, and non-matted.
Her winter coat, which is HUGE (long enough to braid!), is more easily managed if I clip her again in September. By growing in clean and mat-free, it usually doesn't mat until it starts to shed in the spring.
what a great tail - er - tale! - sm

It sounds like you take wonderful care of her! I love the way you got her accustomed to the clippers. Smart woman!

It must be the time of year. I have nothing to offer other than to brush the cat as often as you can.
You know what we do though? Our cat likes to go out on the deck on a leash with my husband. He loves, loves, loves my husband but anyway.... He takes him out on the deck on the leash and then I brush him. It helps a little.
Our cat is also white with a few patches of stripes and the cat hair is everywhere. I vacuum a lot, quite a lot actually because of that cat.

I was only trying, trying to cut down on all the hair flying all around and thought that might work. I did not bathe her in it, just wiped her down, still wrong? Any good ideas what I can use if not that? P.S. She does seem a lot more sedated. JUST KIDDING. She does not have that "bad hair day look."
if you wouldn't put your tongue on it - don't use it on your pets

how does cutting down on static cut down on shedding? I would not wipe my own body down with Bounce, and I don't even lick myself.
My Thoughts Too - Bounce is a chemical
[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder if a teeny, teeny bit of mineral oil or something would help.
two tips - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
1) I comb my cats with a flea comb. The teeth are very fine and I am able to remove lots of fine hair.
2) You know that kind of rubberized stuff you can use to line your shelves? It works really nicely if you wipe your clothes with it. (See link for example.)
Good luck, and lay off the Bounce! :)

If you have cats in your house, their hair will be on everything; it's just a given, unless you have a hairless cat. Some cats shed more than others. Have you tried brushing her on a daily basis? I think the only other thing you can do if changing food hasn't helped any is take her to the vet and have her checked out to find out if something is making her hair fall out. Other than that, I'd say vacuum a lot and carry one of those tape rollers with you when you leave your house and use it. I have cats and no matter how much vacuuming and cleaning I do, their hair is still everywhere, even floating around in the air. It's just something that you have to deal with if you have cats (dogs too).
I might rub the Bounce on my - own clothes before
[ In Reply To ..]
I put it on my kitties. I have a little pet vacuum brush device that I use sometimes on my shedder. She doesn't especially like it, but it does get a lot of the loose fur off her. I think I found this in the "As Seen on TV" section at Wal-Mart.
Change food slowly - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You have to mix the foods to transition them slowly or they will get really sick. We switched our cat to Blue Wilderness food - a grain-free food - and his shedding has diminished GREATLY.
Brushing the cat daily and lint rollers are really about all you can do... Maybe see if a local groomer can give the kitty a good once-over...might help get rid of some of the undercoat/excess hair.
Good luck!!
one more thing... - sm

make sure you are using food without wheat, fillers, or artificial flavors. Very important.

Had same problem with one of mine that was pure white. Very thick coat that would shed all year. Filled my vacuum bags up real quick with all the fur. Gave him a good diet but nothing seemed to help. It could be an omega fatty acid deficiency maybe. Try him/her on some hemp oil or apricot oil. Supposed to be very high in the omegas. It can't hurt. Good luck!
Use a good liquid fabric softener on your laundry - I have 8 cats and I never have a problem
[ In Reply To ..]
I have 8 cats and I use Downey on my clothes and I never have a problem with cat hair.
All of my clothes go in the dryer right now, but even when I was working off site in a more formal environment and didn't dry the clothes but hung them up to dry, I still never had a problem if I used the Downey. Other liquids would work, too, probably, I just like Downey.
The other part of it is you have to clean, clean, clean. I mean sweep/vaccuum every other day at a minimum and vaccuum the upholstery pretty darn regularly. The other thing you really need to do which you didn't seem to mention is you have to brush her. Every night. That and vaccuuming pretty regularly are the only things that will work. I have several cats who have to get brushed fairly regularly, not so much in the winter, but in the summer it's critical.
I appreciate each and every posting - Kitties4

I had not even thought of Bounce being harmful, not 1 thought. I guess I was just trying to think of something that worked. That was a first and only thing. I will try the Bounty and yes I am doing the brushing now but I was not until reading lots here. Again thanks to everyone.
